    First Blood sounds incredibly interesting but it doesn't have an audiobook yet. 😢

      Oh no, I hate when that happens! Europa only does audiobook productions for a few of their books every year sadly.

    I don't read many thrillers but All the Missing Girls sounds good. I'm adding it to my TBR. I dnfed The Marriage Portrait but your enthusiasm is making me reconsider. It was too slow 🐌 so maybe I can wait until that's what I want. I loved Hamnet but that was slow too. I really want to try Spy X but according to my library, everyone else wants to too. 😢

    • @alysereads
      @alysereads 6 часов назад

      I do think Marriage Portrait starts to pick up in plot around the halfway mark but the portion before she is married is slower paced. I know Spy X Family is having a moment especially because the anime has come out.

    I haven't read Hamnet yet, because I'm kind of afraid I won't like it as much as The marriage portrait either. I heard so many people who loved Hamnet then being disappointed by The marriage portrait and then like a smaller group of people who think The marriage portrait is the superior book. But never someone who is loves both books equally?

    • @alysereads
      @alysereads 3 дня назад

      Yes, I haven't heard of anyone liking them equally either. Seems to be a divide. I haven't read any other O'Farrell books so have no others to compare it to.

    I’m glad Piglets was enjoyable even if not a stellar read and a shame about Slugs. I seem to DnF short story collections more than anything else, especially as I read more and more of them and get to know what I do and don’t like. September turned into a bit of a Victorian classic month with a reread of Wuthering Heights as one of the highlights!

I am new to your channel and you might have read some of the ones I am going to mention, but some may be new to you. Here we go: Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, Demons by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy, Bee Sting by Paul Murray, Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov, The Red and the Black by Stendhal, Any Human Heart by William Boyd, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami

    That’s great you’re doing so well on your main goal! Very restrained! My books in books out is looking good, mainly because I unhauled 100 or so books 😉. I always have loosey goosey goals but I’m pretty much on track, reading a bit less globally than I’d like but I’ve been really into the Victorian classics this year and that’s also the reason I’ve read 11, 500+ page books which are either classics or non fiction (the notes add up 😉)

    • @alysereads

    That’s impressive, 16 out of 26! I’m realizing that I probably need to do this to keep myself accountable in my book buying. And yes, having something lighter will definitely add some variety to August. I’m aiming to read about half WIT and then i have some other books I’m already reading that will mix it up. Yes for the global reads! So many interesting titles I’ve heard you rave about. I told you a few of my favorites on your mid year tag and funnily enough a lot of mine are non fiction too even though I don’t read much of it at all 🤔 Butter Honey Pig Bread and Enter Ghost are probably the two calling me the most but I think I could read any of these and get something out of them.

  • @josmith5992

    I honestly don’t know how people pick favorites🤔, I tried to figure out my favorite read and struggled to pin it down. Ironically it seems that some of my favorites have been non fiction which is only about 15% of my reading. Romantic Outlaws by Charlotte Gordon and Traces of Enayat by Iman Mersal for example. I also loved All Aunt Hagar’s Children by Edward P Jones and there is a story in there that made me cry. 😢 My most anticipated new release of the year is Olga Tokarczuk’s Empusium and then there are numerous Restless Books new releases I haven’t read yet and own 🤦‍♀️

      It really does! It’s probably the book with the most plot on this list.

    I really want to read Isabel Zapata’s essays! I loved her poetry collection (which is also kind of nonfiction poetry but in a different way haha). I thought In Vitro wasn’t going to be for me and was planning to start with Empty Pool, but you’ve totally sold me on In Vitro! 👀 Motherfield sounds amazing too. I love those types of experimental, multi format, poetry/essay-y, books.

      I say go for it on In Vitro if you liked that description! And it sounds like you with love Motherfield!

    Hmm, I’m still intrigued by Cold Nights of Childhood but the torture stuff sounds like it would be too much for me so I might have to skip it. I remember when you hauled The Feast I was interested in it so glad you enjoyed it, if didn’t love it.

      In terms of the torque scene where it's described in more detail that happens once and it's fairly brief so might be skippable but she does also talk about receiving electric shock therapy multiple times throughout the book and those are in less detail but were hard to read as well.

    Just like your video on The Wall, this was so interesting Alyse. The way in which there are similarities and differences in what consent means in these two books. I think the non fiction appeals more but they both sound like they tackle it head on and with a lot of thought. Great discussion!

      I liked the nonfiction better and would be my stronger recommendation!

    Ooo that anthology from Deep Vellum sounds so good! I love anthologies as they always introduce me to new writers. I’m currently reading Stories from the Center of the World from City lights. It’s only about a quarter translated but there is a great range of stories in there. Mother-in-law strikes again! How lovely not to have to pay to try books you aren’t sure about. I don’t read fantasy but love to watch it on TV so I’m hoping they make Fourth Wing into a series 🤞

      I'll have to check out that City Lights collection since I don't read enough from the Middle East. Yes, I'm so grateful to my MIL for sharing books out of my comfort zone to diversify my reading. I would be shocked if they didn't try to capitalize on the success of Fourth Wing and adapt it!
