Old Dan Tucker Oldtime Fiddle

Check out my latest EP lukegiles.bandcamp.com/album/just-a-lonesome-holler-vol-ii This is a version of Old Dan Tucker inspired by a recording of Nathan Frazier and Floyd Patterson. Apparently, they'd hardly ever played together when John Work III (a true polymath who is best known for composing the hymn Go Tell It On the Mountain) recorded them in 1942. You'd hardly guess from listening to the ...

Check out my latest EP lukegiles.bandcamp.com/album/just-a-lonesome-holler-vol-ii This is Citigo, a great tune I learnt from a 1942 field recording of Marcus Martin. I love this type of tune, the melody is so simple you can really focus on getting into a groove with the bow! Please Like and Subscribe if you're enjoying the tunes 😁

Check out my latest EP lukegiles.bandcamp.com/album/just-a-lonesome-holler-vol-ii This is a great old tune called Sally's Got Mud Between Her Toes. I learnt it from a field recording of Kentucky fiddler Pat Kingery, his playing is full of twists and turns and variation, each time through the tune is unique. As they say in Ireland, he never plays it the same way once! My version is pretty much t...

Check out my latest EP lukegiles.bandcamp.com/album/just-a-lonesome-holler-vol-ii Tried to share this one last week but RUclips didn't like it for some reason! Here's a version of Soldiers joy I've come up with, inspired mostly by Tommy Jarrell and his inscrutable right hand. I'm going through a phase of revisting all the old chestnuts and seeing how I can breathe some new life into them. I set...

Check out my new EP lukegiles.bandcamp.com/album/just-a-lonesome-holler-vol-ii This is based on Wade Wards version, he called it Half Shaved. I'm using Nylon strings at the moment so I've had to slow it down a bit, but I think it sounds pretty good! Please Like and Subscribe if you're enjoying the tunes 😁

@@lesleygiles1800 thanks Lesley
Masterfully done.
@mhandle6025 thankyou!
I hear like an owl in the back after every 32 or 16 bpm
That's Monty the dog singing along, it does sound a bit like an owl hooting!
@@OldTimeFiddlingoh wow, i thought it was like part of a tempo to keep your beat ahahaha Thats so lovely Almost makes it better
wonderful job
@bearshield7138 thankyou!
Sounds great--really old timey. Are you using any particular bowing pattern or shuffle?
@@mikehillas thanks! I haven't used any particular bowing pattern, but it's got a basic nashville shuffle feel to it
Outstanding. As always
Thank Nathan
How have you tuned your fiddle?
Nice I like it
Love it Mr G
This sounds so good - I wish i could figure out how to bow like you
Very nice bowing!
Thanks man!
So good.
@mhandle6025 Thanks Michael!
Cool song. What tuning do you use? Also got any music books you like thanks.
Hey man, I just started out with playing fiddle and old time but if you're ever in the South West then let me know and maybe we could have a lesson/jam session
I wish I knew how to change a Violin to a fiddle.
Lovely… but don’t wake the little one😊
Good fiddling! Reminds me the time that fiddle was found in the middle of the bush.
@flaviopennacchio69 thankyou!
Tight!
Very nice
Did your learn this from Bruce Molsky?
@@JoshWills-1100 Mostly from a Tommy Jarrell recording but with a few a Bruce's licks thrown in!
@@OldTimeFiddling cool I learned this tune from Bruce for a winter concert and it sounds very similar
Love ❤
That Sal, if she don't got mud between her toes she's beating the ol' meat skin.
Nice
Lovely bowing… goals for the future.
Great fiddling Luke. Awesome sound.
@toddpj2166 thanks Todd!
@@OldTimeFiddling Wish I didn't live across the big pond from you. Would be great to play and learn from you!!
Yeaaahh!❤❤❤❤❤ Liked & Subscribed, Luke!😊
Nice summation of grible lusk and your'd melody as opposed toother melodies that people play this tune for. Nice banjo work, although Murph Gribble played this tune in the guitar-stile or classic banjo with three or four fingers, but this recording is one to be studied, I as lucky enough to know Stu Jamison who found this band when he was visiting his Grand Aunt in Campaign Tennessee right after he got back from WWII, He just asked his aunt who had the best string band around. You do them honor got to get a cd now.
@writerrad Thankyou so much for the kind words! I really like this version of the tune, it's got such a driving, galloping quality to it. I did struggle working out the banjo part, the recording has an almost modal/minor sound, and I was sure there was something in the banjo tuning or guitar chords that was doing that but I couldn't figure out what it was
Love it Mr G❤
Two man bands are the best. 🐶
Monty's definitely the frontman!
You make the fiddle sing!
Thanks Todd!
Perfect as usual❤
Classic
been listening to this on repeat, so chill
@fancypigeon9100 it's really relaxing to play!
Love it Mr G
Fabulous rendition. Gotta get me some lessons from you one day - your tone is superb.
Thanks man! 😊 drop me an email if you ever want a lesson: lukegile7@protonmail.com
Outstanding!
Cool never heard this tune before!
Thanks! I think it sounds a bit like Sail Away Ladies
@@OldTimeFiddling beautiful
Poor lost Indian, lookin' all around. Very nice version, really have that tumbling water sound I love so much in banjo.
❤lovely
Beautifully played. I've always been obsessed with the melody of Liza Jane and you just play it so nice!
Thankyou!
You gigging at the moment?
Go out busking occasionally but haven't done any gigs. Wouldn't say no to one though!
@@OldTimeFiddling are you Cambridge based? If you ever need a guitarist give us a bell
Will do!

Well played
Thankyou kindly!
@@OldTimeFiddling I seem to remember a wild remix video of this tune. It was really fun.
@@burrelsk There was, I think it got culled when I was having one of those 'everything I do is rubbish moments'! Think I still have it somewhere
@@OldTimeFiddling that video blew my mind when I first saw it. I shared it around. I must have watched it at least 10 times.
