Great insights on the Washington mindset. Makes me think of the Benjamin Franklin quote "a republic, if you can keep it." Maybe this happens with all governments but somewhere along the line people lose focus on the goal. They get so obsessed with beating the other side that they don't realize we're supposed to all be on the same team. It's like a marriage where two spouses continually fight and it becomes their norm or way of being. Also, the state of things in Israel before October 7 comes to mind. I really know nothing about that situation, but I do understand that there was a tremendous amount of internal division, which was clearly capitalized on by Israel's enemies. Am I right in assuming that Israel is back to focusing on the goal? Or at least it's going to take a long time for people to forget that they're all on the same team in Israel, and better stay that way to remain safe and to thrive? I don't know. I Highly disagree with the Hashkafa argument. Everyone changes, and I sure hope you don't have the same beliefs at twenty that you do. Do at forty-two. Forget the argument of someone chilling out; what if a person gets a spiritually enlightened marriage. They should leave their spouse because now they are frumer. I think the "boxes" she spoke about are precisely what causes these issues in dating. I know many people who have come home from amazing dates and ended them based on a detail they can't respect in Hashkafa. By respecting values, you should respect the morals and beliefs they stand for, not nitty-gritty practical things that constantly change. We draw imaginary margins on imaginary papers. It's not focusing on reality; it's trying to find certainty in places that can't promise it.

Single guy here in a similar demographic to Dovi. I wonder if he has ROCD. A wild phenomenon where the possibility of “someone better(prettier) out there” totally cripples and stunts relationship building…especially common in the frum world where pics and resumes are blasted around non stop, the options seem endless and it feels impossible not to compare and think “what if”. Hi. I want to apologize for my tone and how I framed certain things in a previous post on this thread. I think I led too much with emotion, hubris, and disrespect. I think if I would have just asked Rabbi Wolpe to consider some of the academics, journalists, and activists I had listed, this would have been a less contentious way of expressing my opinion. Unfortunately, I am sometimes clumsy and will on occasion lose sight of the fact that I'm actually addressing human beings in my internet posts. In other words, I'll say things online and in a certain tone that I would otherwise not say, and say in such a tone, in person. And that's a kind of cowardice. I did, however, intend on editing the post and recently returned to do so only to find it had been taken down. Perhaps some of my frustration comes from the way my people have responded to those of us who criticize Israel. Most of us are trying to advocate for Palestinian rights and educate our community about some of the hard truths surrounding the issue. I think someone like Peter Beinart does an excellent job in doing just that. But because of the position I've taken, I've been labeled an anti-semite or self-hating Jew. Encountering this label as I do from time to time has been surreal. I think it's more representative of a conditioning, a response system within our brains that has been programmed by our parents and Jewish educators to automatically label harsh criticism of Israel as "antisemitic", than it is a logical assessment or well thought out position. I know this now from being on both sides of the issue. During the first 47 years of my life, when I was a Zionist, I witnessed it being used against others who dared to criticize Israel. It's based on the "New antisemitism" and I have seen it being used a lot over the past year plus. Israel partisans might think it's their job to call out criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinian rights by labeling it antisemitism, but I see it as a pernicious tool that is meant to suppress dissent while also having the effect of undermining the calling out of actual anti-semitism. And I think it is dysfunctional and a great detriment to our community. Ultimately, I think we will have to agree to disagree that anti-Zionism equals antisemitism. I am of the belief that Zionism is an ideology and is not synonymous with Judaism which, of course, is a religion. A religion that is a big part of my identity and who I am. And when Israel and Zionists say they need to do a genocide in my name, to protect me, a Jew in the diaspora, I think I have a right to speak out and criticize.
