If you want to try capping the Stratum in only an inch of sand and keep the Stratum layer as deep as you have it you can have the benefit of sand holding your plants down and they can get their roots deep into the Stratum. If you like the darker look there are brands of aquarium sand that are black. My red shrimp tank has Stoney River black sand, it's medium grit. But I'm sure black diamond blasting sand would work too, you may have to clean it though.

Update? Would you still recommend this substrate? Any advice you can share for someone switching to Stratum?

Beautiful tank and fish, I want to start a peacock and Redfin hap tank but all I have is a 60 gal. I have had the tank running for years it was the home to a Jack Dempsey for about 7 years who sadly passed, now there is only a feather fin squeaker catfish and two plecos left. I was hoping to get 3 male peacocks and 2 Redfin haps. Do you think a 60 gallon is big enough for these fish? I'm new to African cichlids but I have kept other cichlids in the past. Thank you!

Nice fish and tank. I also have an FX6 in my 75g African chiclid tank, and I'm starting to restock it again. I use pool filter sand for my substrate and the water here in San Antonio TX has a high pH naturally. I clean my FX6 at least once a month and I do water changes once a week.

Does this substrate require more frequent cleaning of the filter? Ive heard it may cause "mud" buildup in the filters.

You have a nice tank sir .....I got into this hobby about 3yrs ago and I love it ......I DIDN'T READ .....and do my homework before just buying african cichlids for my 75 gallon with mbunas and peacocks......very very expensive lesson learned now I've got people into this hobby the very first thing I tell them is to read and do your homework before you buy and do anything to your tank!...Now I'm begging people for knowledge 😀! And still learning everyday

Hey Bro how many Cichlids are in your 75 gallon?

10 bubbles per second sounds worrying on the co2. Is this in-line as I don't see any form of atomizer but I would imagine in-line should distribute the co2 effectively whereas you shouldn't need the flow that high

Is 48x15x18 (60 gallon) ok for 20 cichlids ?
