I shook my head stepping away from his hand. “I can’t.” I told him. “Do you really want to stay here?” His question was calm but hopeful, he still has his hand out, waiting for me. “No.” I told him, it was the truth, I didn’t, no one wanted to be here. “Then come with me.” He reached for me, but I pulled away. Do you really want to condemn them to that fate?” He was angry, I couldn’t tell if it was at me or if it was at this life and the hardships we’ve suffered. “I don’t.” I tell him. “but once you leave, you can’t never come back, and the universe is a big place you might never see another planet for as long as you live. Or you might die trying to leave.” I suck in a sharp breath, finally making eye contact with him for the first time since he drug me out here to ask me this question. “And that’s not a risk I’m will to take.” “Fine!” He screamed. “Stay here and die.” He stormed up into the rocket and slammed the door shut, sealing it with a heavy thunking hissing sound. I moved back giving this monstrous piece of machinery space. I watched as it lifted off, and made its way up, and up, until it’s stopped. I watched the fire ball start to hurl itself back to the ground. I couldn’t bare to watch anymore, I turned and headed back to the village. There were only two constants facts of life here. They brought my grandparents here to farm and work, promised everyone a new life here. But, when the resources ran dry, they took as much oceana nd river as they could and left. They promised them "we'll be back for you, just give us time." That was 80 years ago. I know jump tech has advanced a lot since then, you're proof of it. Oh, but don't worry about us. We'll manage.

Honestly this is the vibe that Starfield gave me as I played. It may be repetitive or lacking in content, but it let my imagination roam as I felt like every location I went to was lived-in. Every dingy, dirty mining colony or dark bathroom was honestly a treat to me, and one of my favorite things was enjoying the atmosphere whenever possible.

Now, all that remained was a wasteland, dotted with the skeletal remains of what had once been a flourishing civilization. The sky was perpetually gray, a thick haze of dust and ash hanging in the air, and the sun struggled to pierce through the clouds, casting a pale, sickly light over the land. Elara stood on a ridge overlooking what was once the capital city, her cloak wrapped tightly around her to ward off the biting wind. She had grown up here, in a time when the rivers still ran clear and the forests stretched for miles. But that was a lifetime ago. Now, the city was nothing more than a ghost town, its buildings crumbling and overgrown with thorny vines that seemed to thrive on the desolation. Her father had told her stories of the "Great Migration," when the starships had arrived from distant worlds, promising a new era of prosperity. They had come seeking resources, offering technology and knowledge in exchange for what Etrali Prime could provide. For a time, it seemed like a fair trade. But then the starships stopped coming. The planet’s resources were stripped bare, its people left to fend for themselves. Crops withered under the polluted skies, and the once-thriving communities dwindled into isolated pockets of survival. Her father had been a gardener, one of the few who still believed in the old ways, in nurturing the land rather than exploiting it. He had died trying to cultivate a garden in the city square, a futile attempt to bring life back to a dying world. Elara made her way down the ridge, her boots crunching on the cracked earth. She had a destination in mind, a place she had not visited since her father’s death. The garden. As she walked, she passed by abandoned homes, their windows shattered and doors hanging from their hinges. The streets were eerily quiet, save for the occasional gust of wind that sent debris skittering across the ground. When she reached the garden, her heart ached at the sight. It was little more than a patch of dried, cracked soil surrounded by a rusted fence. The trees her father had planted were nothing but brittle sticks protruding from the ground, their leaves long gone. She knelt down and touched the earth, feeling the dry, lifeless dirt crumble between her fingers. But then, something caught her eye. Amidst the barren soil, there was a single, green sprout. Her fingers brushed against the delicate leaves, and she felt a spark of hope ignite within her. The starships might never pass by here again. The world outside might never change. But here, in this quiet corner of a forgotten planet, Elara would make her stand. She would prove that even in the darkest of times, even when hope seemed lost, there was still a reason to believe. The last garden would grow, and with it, perhaps, a new beginning.

...but I do not care anymore. We were left behind. We were sent here five years ago to colonize the planet. We've seen this before; we saw our nations push out natives. Instead, peace was made, much to their dismay. When it was time to leave, they left us behind. Not because there was no room, but because they just didn't feel like it. Their empire was crumbling anyways. I've made peace with what I left behind and what I may never get to do. I'm here, and there is much of this planet to explore and learn about. The natives see us as their own, strangely enough. With less things to worry about, I feel more at peace, in my element. I feel at home on the back of a mount, searching for food or other routes. Some days, I just run as far as I can, only coming back when I start to feel tired.

Mmm, new celestial destination hot off the presses

They shut down the last starports decades ago. Trade had ground to a halt, and tourists didn’t want to step foot on some rock on the outer rim, so there wasn’t much point in wasting power on them. We tore them apart for scrap and made farming tools out of it. I have a tractor with the words “Grasp the Universe!” embossed on the back. Part of an old advertisement I think, back when the corps cared about what we settlers thought. We used to be a mine-world, but… well you know how that goes. It’s all infinite gains and unlimited wealth until the rocks dry up. Then all the investors pull out and run the second it looks like maybe, maybe the planet might be running low. Then we, the people they brought in to tear up the ground and pull metal from earth get left in their dust. Not a penny richer to show for it. It was hard to adjust to a farmer’s life at first, but I didn’t have much choice. If you don’t grow your own food around here, you starve. Even in the glory days we relied on trade with the other colonies for food, the soil here is about as fertile as a desert. Hard to grow anything decent. But you gotta do it if you wanna eat nowadays. And it’s honest work, keeps the mind busy. Sometimes, out on the fields, I look up at the sky and remember all the bolts of light that used to fly past the clouds. All those ships going to and from, doing god knows what in times better than these. But now it’s just the clouds and the endless blue. The starships never pass by here anymore.

I woke to the familiar sound of rain dripping from the mouth of our cave dwelling into the irrigation canal. A lot has changed since my grandfather helped build that irrigation system. Back then people had hope, a vision for a brighter future. An entire generation of planetsiders unified by a common purpose. Now, it's almost painful to remember what that purpose even was. The Great Awakening changed everything. And now... the starships never pass by here anymore.
