To Purgatory... in a Subaru Forester
I attended the Sooner State Overland Rally hosted by @WestOkOverland recently. While there, a group of us went out to tackle the infamous Purgatory Road on the Sugar Creek Loop of the Oklahoma Backroad Exploration Route. @mattsadv3ntures led our group. Special thanks to @ericscamping for sharing his drone footage with me for this video.

Freespirit Recreation Evolution v1... why I regret buying it

How I pack my Frontrunner Wolfpack Pro

Still catching up on videos from winter, here's a quick video on how I pack my Frontrunner Wolfpack Pro. This is a nice storage solution. At $80 US for a plastic container, it is a bit pricey. Especially when you add the dividers. It does, however, keep the things I have in it nice and organized.

REI Basecamp 6 vs. Gazelle T4 setup time
How long is the Evolution roof top tent?
External length is 85" for the Evolution V1. Internal length shows 80" but I believe my measurement was 78" internal length. Note that there's now a V2 and it has a short version and a standard version. Their specs are listed on the website, but I'd recommend that you verify specs in person before ordering. They have a tendency to not be accurate.
@@xpoverland thanks that seems very long for my Subaru
This video made me change my mind about this tent! Awesome hate points!
Can i get the file?
If you're referring to the gps file for this route, you can find the files in the Oklahoma Overland Facebook group.
Have you reached out to Freedom Spirit regarding this. Their customer service has been great to me. I have the Evolution V1 55” and my head room is def higher than yours. I feel like maybe the wrong struts were installed. This would limit the extension, thus affecting your height. They can easily be switched out. Without you staying in your video that you reached out to the company I feel this video is a little bashing of a great company.
I did reach out to them and they basically said sorry it didn't work out for you.
Dude, it’s a no brainer! The gazelle t4 is way better than that REI tent. I’d never buy that REI tent. The Gazelle is the best tent I’ve ever bought. I camp in snow, rain and wind. No problems ever. This guy hasn’t had enough experience
Wow! thanks for your input. This was day one of even seeing a Gazelle T4 IRL. Since this video came out more than 3 years ago, I can tell you that the T4 is not "way better than the REI tent." I have camped in the heat and in the cold and everything in between. This tent is super hot when it is hot outside. Not enough ventilation, especially when it is hot and rainy when you have to keep the rainfly on. The screen material doesn't allow the same airflow as the REI tent and the thicker material isn't as breathable. As I may have mentioned in the video, if you have a smaller car, the REI tent makes more sense. I use the Gazelle a lot. I've also had to replace the rainfly and a rainfly pole with the Gazelle because a pole snapped and ripped the rainfly. Never had a problem with the REI tent. And as other helpful commenters have pointed out that this is an apples to oranges comparison, it was never meant to be a direct comparison of the tents. Only to show how much faster the Gazelle was to set up than a similar sized traditional tent. in that alone, the Gazelle wins. In every other category, there are wins for both and losses for both that makes it your personal choice which features work best for you. For me, the REI tent is still the more versatile tent. The Gazelle also serves its intended purpose very well and that is why I still have and use both.
@@xpoverland I guess we camp different, but that’s ok. I’ve heard the same complaint about t4 before, but where are you camping? I can’t be bothered by polls. It stores fine in my vehicle and it’s just simple and fast. For the price tag it wouldn’t bother me as much to replace the whole tent if it was damaged. It’s under $300. When you’re trying to keep up with rooftop tent guys the design of the t4 helps. I was looking into the shiftpod and that’s $700 bucks and with those small windows and insulated walls, it didn’t seem like a year round tent. The REI may work for you, but for me the t4 works out way better. Maybe I should explain the way I camp next time I comment.
I don't really think the way you camp makes as much of a difference as your specific needs or wants. I agree that the T4 is a better option for year round camping than the shift pod and the T4 does stay warmer in the winter than the REI. It is my choice for winter camping. I did have a rooftop tent for a while and switched back to the T4. I'm just saying that it's not such a no brainer and not way better. There are definite pros and cons. The T4 works better for you. I think they both have a place for me, depending on what I'm doing. The really important thing is just to get out there and enjoy camping.
What kind of crossbars do you have on your forester?
I have the Rhino Rack Vortex crossbars.
Thanks . I was looking at this one. Were you able to return it?
No. I wasn't able to return and i was kinda blown off when I told them I was unhappy that their specs were incorrect on their website. They seem to have corrected their specs with the new version but I wouldn't purchase again without double checking ahead of time. I ended up selling and going back to my Gazelle tent for now. Resale market for a rooftop tent is abysmal, so make sure you are very sure of the tent you want to buy before you do it. If I decide to go that route again, I'll check them out at an expo in person and look for a discount before I buy. Thanks for watching.
Is this the SHORT model?
Thanks for watching. This is the version 1 which was only available in 49" width and 55" width. Both were the same length. The V2 is available in a short (79") and long (88") model. Both of the V2 models are the same width. Their website shows just a V2 model but the specs are a bit confusing, so I'm not sure if it is a separate model or not. The one major complaint I have is their specs are inaccurate or incomplete. Or they make an almost perfect product with a major oversight that would have made it perfect. This tent was really well made. The quality of workmanship was top of the line. But inaccurate specs and a couple design oversights made me sell it and go back to the Gazelle tent for now. Their Aspen Lite looks promising. Could be a perfect tent, but it has zero cargo carrying capacity, so you can't even put a rigid solar panel or maxtrax on top. I wouldn't want to put much weight on top, but it'd be nice to be able to put something up there. Their standard Aspen can do that, but is missing many of the features of the Aspen Lite that make it near perfect. My best advice is to check them out in person and buy when they're on sale.
Most definitely, hey thanks for the thorough feedback I appreciate that
@@xpoverland Which aré the missing features of the Standard that the Lite has ?
@@gusteevte5665 I'm not sure what you mean. The newer version is the V2 and comes in a short and long. The main differences are the length and the new mattress. I'll have to look to see if there any other notable differences.
Do you know if there are different versions of the Evo V1 tent (you know, like V1.0 vs. V1.1)? I have the 49" wide Evo V1, and it doesn't look as short as yours. I haven't opened it and taken measurements of the height, but when I look at pics, it looks taller. I wish I could attach a picture here, but I can't....
As far as I know, there is only V1 and now V2.
I have six of these mounted on my roof rack and they all leaked.
That's unfortunate but good to know.
That is brutal. I hope they let you upgrade to the V2 for dirt cheap.
Unlikely, but hopefully this video helps someone else make a more informed purchase. I learned my lesson; don't buy a RTT without seeing it in person first. Thanks for watching!
Fast and simple video. Congrats. Eigth minutes of dreaming.
Beautiful scenery. I don’t take it in well when I go that way. I just get to New Mexico or Colorado. I need more journey and less destination.
Same here. I've always just blasted through on my way to somewhere else. I'm trying appreciate what we have here and stop to smell the roses along the way between those longer trips.
Easy scenic backroads, fun to explore with a Subaru. One of my favorite routes.
I've seen videos that they still leak. bummer. I wanted 2. i'll buy one for now and use it for dirty clothes at the end of a trip. not sure what else I really can deal with getting wet on a trip :(. it's too bad, really. U'd think they'd have a lid that would protrude downwards or something so to be more water resistant. i hope your lantern doesn't get ruined in the rain
That's unfortunate. I carry mine inside my vehicle, so it won't get wet on the drive to where I'm going, but it'd be nice to know I could throw it on top and keep my stuff dry.
Also, if the "vestibule is that important you should have gotten the Gazelle T4 Plus. JMHO
Thanks again for your humble opinions. This video was my first look at the T4 and comparing it to the tent it would mostly replace for overlanding trips. I am discussing pros and cons with the T4, not the T4 plus or other versions. I was looking for speed of setup in this video but noted that not having a vestibule is a tradeoff. Overall, I have been happy with the T4 and still have no plans to get a T4 Plus.
I will be more interested when you actually use it. I don't think putting on the roof is a negative. JMHO
Thanks for your humble opinions. I have used the Gazelle tent for about 3 years now and have taken it on long trips carrying it on the roof with no issues at 80mph.
Each roof top tent has it’s good and bad points. It depends where you are and what is convenient for you. Me? I’m in California; there are many windows, you don’t have to open the back one when it rains. My decision for this tent are you can quick set up/get in get out rain or shine, no need fiddling with rods and awnings, especially if it’s raining.
I don't disagree. It's a real tradeoff for the speed and ease of setup. I bought it because I liked the idea of being able to get in bed within 45 seconds.
A lot of people regret buying a RTT, I have always used a canvas ground tent and will continue to do so, for me a ground tent has more positives then negative.
I agree. I'm switching back to a ground tent. There are still things I like about the RTT, but the cons outweigh the pros.
A lot of people love their RTT. Me personally, I like being off of the ground and out of the mud and away from critters. I like that I can pack up and go in a few minutes instead of messing around with a ground tent and trying to get it folded up and packed if I need to leave in a hurry.
Simple and clean setup. I like it.
Thanks for watching. I really like the organization this setup provides. It's not a perfect or budget solution, but it is SO much better than the older Plano boxes I used to use. I do have a newer storage box that I use to store dry foods that I really like and is a good, budget alternative to the Frontrunner box.
Great video. Great edit. Looks like a good camping spot. And im with you on the cool weather camping. Im about done with this heat lol. Im ready for a busy fall camping schedule. Keep the videos coming. Ill See you on the trail.
Looking forward to the fall rally.
Several Good points. I didn’t realize how exposed the windows were on this style of tent. Wouldn’t be much fun in a rainstorm, the ventilation would suck.
Yes. Honestly, I feel like that's the biggest design flaw. Especially with the tent body being black, it heats up fast, which is okay when its cold, but would suck in the rain on a warm or hot day.
Can you send me the starting map? We are headed there tomorrow from medicine park.
Sorry I missed this! I was off the grid. I'm hoping you found it. If not, let me know and I'll get you the info.
Is a great ride through there done it all
How far away is this from Ada?
It is roughly 2.5 hours from Ada. It is near Red Rock Canyon State Park.
Yeah, the little door does bother me on the Gazelle. I love how easy they are to set up though and the reviews that cover weather handling are very promising. I see now that they have a t4 plus hub design that has the addition of a full sized entry on one end so if I get one of these that's the one I'm going for. I keep looking for a better overall option than the Gazelle for the money and I'm not seeing it yet but I'm still looking. I plan on travelling cross country with my dog and I'm not partial to setting up and tearing down a tent that isn't instant if I don't absolutely need to. Some of these popup tents can be setup up and crawled into without even needing to stake right away if you're in a hurry to get out of the weather.
Yeah, I was looking at the new version with the large door myself. Could be a win-win.
Thanks for this video! we just bought our first jeep and were looking for some easy scenic routes to do with our daughter, this looks perfect!
It's a great route. Hope you get out there and enjoy it.
slide that door and hello mosquitos, unfold that seat for your bed and you wont have room for a pee.
True. I'd get a magnetic mosquito net for the door if this were my van.
Those Gazelle tents are real hard to beat. I have the T-4 and the MSR Habitude 6. If I’m going out for a weekend or I’m going to setting up and taking down camp numerous times, I’m taking the T4. If I’m gonna set up and stay in one spot, use my cot, I take the MSR. The only real plus to the other tents is that huge door. The T4 door takes some getting used to. If you stake down those hubs on the T4 it is indestructible. I’ve had mine is some serious wind and was just fine.
I agree. I bought a rooftop tent on a black Friday sale and I'm still working out the kinks and hoping I didn't make an expensive mistake. It's hard to beat room to stand up without getting out of the tent.
Beautiful place. It has been on my bucket list for a while but I have never made the trip. Great cast BTW.
We should plan a trip down that way to explore and fish.
@@xpoverland you bet. You gotta teach me that cast.
Neat video - i agree wish someone made a small pop top 4x4 van with kitchen. It’s why I got one. Not anything like it now. Technically spelled Syncro btw. (Sorry to be that guy correcting spelling in comments).
Oh man! I didn't catch that! I'm okay with you being that guy.
It's so good man👍👍
Is a 4x4 a must?
Well... That depends on a few things. First, I drove my Subaru Forester on this route. Its got great all wheel drive, but no low range like a 4x4 has. There was one spot (seen at the end of this video) with a ledge. Video doesn't do it justice, but it was a little bit of a challenge with the Subaru. Obviously, I made it but having a 4x4 probably would have made it easier. I also haven't done the complete route. I'll be down there tomorrow to finish it. There may be more obstacles that will test the Subaru. I'll film it and we shall see. When I did this section, it was really dry so the road was very sandy. I imagine it'd be a mess if it were wet and muddy. So... depending on the conditions, I'd say you could do it in a 2 wheel drive truck or SUV. You're also never far from a better maintained road if you need to jump off this route.
I debated between the REI Basecamp 4 & the Gazelle 3. I ended up getting the REI Basecamp 4. My reasoning being 1) price. I got a super deal on sale at REI. 2) the Basecamp is a 3-4 season tent. 3) The vestibule & larger door were major pluses for me. 4) REI has a great warranty and really stands behind their products. I will note that I bought mine for car camping and not overland. I love the easy set up of the Gazelle and if I was doing Overland Camping I may have gone that route. But I think either tent is a great tent if it meets the needs you are looking for. Great side by side review!
You're correct that the tent should meet the needs you're looking for. I still have both and use the one that suits the situation best. The Gazelle takes up a lot of space for transport and should definitely be a consideration. Thanks for watching.
I love large doorways also. It's easier. Im going to get gazelle T4 plus so I will have the double screen door
That's definitely a good option. And it'll give you some space away from the mosquitos!
Well done! I felt as you did about western Oklahoma. The Sugar Creek Loop changed my mind.
Thanks! This taught me that western OK has a lot more to offer.
Nice overview. It is surprising what all Oklahoma has to offer. Did it on the first run with the route master. We pulled a trailer.
Cool to see the trail like this, I have only seen pictures up until now. Will definitely need to make a trip and check it out.
It is definitely worth checking out.
Great video!
Thanks! And thanks for mapping the route! I'm looking forward to finishing this route and checking out the others.
I have a T4 and was looking to downsize to a T3 since it's just me and the dog....now they are seemingly impossible to find. I could probably double my money if I wanted to sell my T4 green.
It's possible. For me, the storage and transport size of the T3 isn't enough of a difference to justify losing the interior space of the T4. If I'm going to carry something that big around with me, I might as well be able to stand up inside.
Yeah-- good video--- but you have apples and oranges on the setup and take down-- The Basecamp 6 rain fly adds at least another 3-5 minutes to the setup time...
The Gazelle is similar to the hub design of my hunting blind. Does it have a way to lock the hubs so they don't close under high winds, snow, etc?
It doesn't have a locking mechanism, but there are spots to connect guy lines, but I haven't needed that yet.
I have used tent in high winds with the tie downs on all 4 sides, no problems . I know walls facing winds will collapse but not the tent itself.
Waiting for T-4 plus to finally come back in stock. The t-8 just showed up but I want the gazebo portion of the T-4 Plus.
Just missed T-4 plus new inventory. Looks like the price has gone up.
@@vonzellable Along with every other product in this country!
Apparently I thought you were talking about a T4 plus oops my bad
It's all good. Yeah, this is the Gazelle T4, not the plus. I'd like to see the plus and check it out. It's only slightly larger when packed than the T4 and supposedly takes just a few seconds longer to setup.
Hello Okie.. T-town here.
The gazelle is sick !! - main question alot of us have is how does fit on a rack or inside a THULE roof box??
It rides on my roof rails fine. I haven't done 8 hours of driving 75+mph with it up there yet, but it sits fine so far. I did buy some velcro straps to cinch down any loose fabric from the bag just to keep it more aerodynamic. It doesn't fit inside my Thule Force XT Sport, but it would fit inside the Force XT XL or similar sized or larger roof box.
I’m way late to the party, but it fits on my slimline rack as well as inside my Thule XL box with zero issues. I usually stack it next to the Thule box so I have full box storage available for gear and it takes up very little room on the rack.
i recently purchased a T4 hub tent. i’m a solo camper, 65 yrs old & 5’4. there’s no problem for me carrying a 30 lb bag over my shoulder for a short distance. i was hesitant about the D-shaped doors but if you can lift your leg enough to go in and out then it’s not so much a deal breaker. the T4 has ample room for a sleeping cot, table, chair, cooler and there’s still room to walk around in. the T4 slides in the back of my FJ Cruiser with no issues. i’ll be going camper more often now.😊
Now that you have had a little time, which tent are you using more?
I'm using the Gazelle T4 more right now. It is definitely easier to set by myself. The true test will be in June when my wife and son joins me, my buddy, and my twin sister's family on a trip through CO and Utah. It'll have to ride on top for that trip. My sister will be using my Basecamp during the trip.
Thanks so much for the reply. I have a great Kingdom 4 tent, but rarely use it because it is such a pain to put up, and I end up sleeping in my van. I am leaning towards the T4, or maybe even the T4 Plus. Any thoughts?
Honestly? The addition of the screen room is cool. If you don't mind adding 17lbs to the weight of the T4 and a bit more girth when packed, then you'd have a big space to hang out in when the mosquitos come out. It looks like it doesn't take much more time to set up.
I am trying to decide between these two tents, so this video was great! I currently have the Grand Hut 6 for car camping and like it but it is very susceptible to wind gusts and the vestibule areas let some water in if it's been raining and you need to get out. Have you been able to test both of these in wet conditions? I like the idea of the T4 for quick overnighters, which is what we plan to do more of, but the base camp seems like it would be better for the oversized coleman cots that we are planning to use this season.
The basecamp wins in this category. The vestibule is large enough to take off wet shoes outside the tent and covers the doorway so rain doesn't get inside the tent. It is very stable in the wind with its 4 pole design plus the rainfly pole. You can also set up your cot outside and carry it through the massive door with ease. The T4 lacks a vestibule and full coverage rainfly and the doors are small. You really have to set the cot up inside the T4. You'll also lose access to the 2nd door if you have more than one cot. They both stay dry in the rain I've had them in so far. I like them both for different reasons and work around the T4 issues. I have a door mat just inside the T4 doorway to step in and take off my shoes to keep the tent floor cleaner. The T4 is a definite plus for camping solo, changing campsites daily and have the space to transport it, but the basecamp is nice when you're in one spot for a few days.
In adverse weather use the Basecamp is superior to the Gazelle - the frame system is stiffer and the rain fly completely covers the tent.
Gazelle seems kind of bulky when packed up, but beyond that it looks pretty sweet. I'll stick to my REI tent for now as it takes up much less space.
Yes, the Gazelle is quite bulky. It's definitely a tradeoff for the quick setup.
I have the basecamp (plus multi kingdom 6 and 8). I now have two gazelle t4 overland edition. The set up time makes the t4 a better option for us. We use the tents as adult kido camping bedrooms while we are in our 2 person trailer trailer. They also make great guest houses. Along with our clam screenhouse setting up camp takes minutes vs an hour. Makes all the difference for a weekend trip.
