I understand people’s shock because it was a wonderful Grisaille, this looks like a great exercise!
Oh no.. this is not how you add color to a grisaille. The layers of color need to be extremely thin to retain the underpainting.
This is not the traditional 'academic' approach - this is a class exercise for a beginning painting class to be completed in a short period of time. It is modified for learning purposes.

dude why do you bother witth a grisaille when you're going to cover it with opaque paints really double work mate
Because this is designed as a learning exercise where students are taught to perceive and manipulate value before moving to color
There is something really odd about this color layering technique. Why bother beautifully detailing grisaille underpainting if it's going to be flatly covered by color? If you watched this video and is curious about underpaiting and grisaille techniques, the link bellow seems quite more accurate, and it makes much more sense.
