Went up and over Marmot Pass to Boulder shelter 2 weeks ago to the day. I had watched this video a few days before the trip. I remember looking across the Dungeness and trying to figure out which route you would’ve taken to the saddle between Hal Foss and Fricaba. Only thing I could figure out was that you guys are complete animals. Haven’t been to Deception Basin since 2006 when I hiked up the south side of Fricaba and dropped into a basin on the NW side of it. There is a ridge coming off the north side with some spectacular strata.
That sounds awesome brother I haven’t been up to Marmot Pass in a while. I am dealing with some bursitis in the knee and haven’t been able to get out much in the last two weeks😅. Working for a sea kayaking company in Port Angeles so staying busy at least. Hope all is going well and you are getting some good hikes in.
Great music! Your brother is very talented!
Nice video. The views are awesome. I enjoyed watching it. Thanks for sharing. subd & 👍
Just found your channel today. You go on some great adventures. Those were some amazing fall colors. Waking up to frozen socks and shoes sounds terrible, good thing the sun came out and warmed things up a bit.
@@scottalpine hey sorry for just responding. I hope you are having a great summer and getting some awesome adventures in.
@@forestdweller512 Yup great so far, no worries on a late response, life happens.
It always looks so awesome to see the transition from rain to snow in the mountains. It was pretty cool to see the way the wind blew the snow up, really shows how that mountain weather can do weird things.
It always amazes me how the weather changes every few thousand feet of elevation gain in the Olympics. Pissing rain at sea level and a blizzard at 5k’. I spent the winter working in Colorado and it was snow all the time no real variety like the PNW.
Wow you picked a great time for that trip. Thanks for sharing your adventures with everyone.
The conditions were incredible along the entire hike🙏.
That was quite the hike. Some great views too. Really nice that you can get dropped off up there and hike down to your vehicle.
I love the ability to take the bus up there.
Nicely done. Been there in September (2006 if I remember) but approached from Royal Basin. Hiked up to the saddle between Hal Foss and Fricaba and traversed over Fricaba. There is another basin up there with some great view of the strata that make up a ridge that comes off the north side of Fricaba. Then went up to the ridge that leads to Petunia and dropped back into upper Royal. Unbelievably beautiful area. Excellent job of capturing that!
Thanks brother. I am thinking about going back next week while the conditions are still prime 🤪.
Nice video, Chris. Looks like it was a beautiful day. 🌺
Thank you🎉
Nice Hike! Thanks for showing those of us who can't do that hike what it looks like from up there. Amazing. Is it as narrow on the ridge as it looks?!🫨
Glad you enjoyed it. Its narrow in one section but most of the ridge traverse is pretty mellow.
Beautiful scenery!
Its amazing up there
@@forestdweller512 looks like the summer solstice was beautiful!
😊
Piknie ❤
Looks like a good day 👌🏼
One of my top 5 ski days of all time😀
@@forestdweller512 I can see why ☺️
Close call! Nice view though. What mountain or area in ONP?
Mt. Angeles. Luckily I saw the snow falling from some cliffs overhead and had a few seconds to take cover and pull out my phone😂.
Fun looking terrain!
I love it up there. And only a 5 minute drive from my house to the TH🙏.
What an adventure! Great video! 😄
Just another day in the Olympics 🤪
In the 1970's I used to climb all over that mountain photographing Mountain Goats. Even in winter. Where are all the mountain goats? The place used to be crawling with them. One day while having lunch I had 42 Mountain Goats sitting around me. They got so used to me that I would use a wide-angle lens!
The goats were removed by the NPS because they were invasive. Some of them they captured and relocated to the N.Cascades and others shot. I saw the goat hunting helicopter when I was out on the Bailey range. Also a gentleman was killed by a goat up on Mt. Angeles in 2010.
Thank you! I solo hiked the Skyline 48 years ago. Better marked trail now.
Love your videos brother. I have seen a few where you were hiking the Olympics! Super cool.
😂

It's damn hard on lungs, worse than tobacco. I quit it back in the 80s. I can still climb mtns, my friends who didn't quit either can't anymore or are dead from lung cancer.
yes Sir lots of resin:)
I think you have what it takes
Bill Monroe would not approve.
I wouldn't be so sure about that. A part of me can picture Bill M. (RIP) enjoying some wacky tabbacky, lmao.
@@rfugate42 but never on stage.
Do the Cartels know your skiing all over their product? Just asking. For a friend.
That seems so fun, virtually no tracks at all
It was a fabulous day😀. The area had been closed for two days and I got lucky enough to get up there right when they opened the terrain.
@@forestdweller512 I’m a new snowboarder and I can’t wait until I can go again but the season is almost over😢
@@anaboveaveragedogI work at Steamboat Resort so I get lots of turns in😀. Wishing you many years of awesome snowboarding 🎉.
Hell yes
Just curious. Will all of the chicken of the woods shots you get, have you ever harvested any and eaten it? Supposed to be pretty good and taste like chicken.
He’s California sober as they say……
How about a song for Palestine then...
Lmao I hope you’re kidding. American folk music doesn’t cover that topic so you might as well look somewhere else.
@@KuuchWizard whats wrong with showing a bit of compassion for the victims of your countries 70 year long campaign of genocide. I believe the song you're looking for would be Wargasm.
The second one i made up, but it works well over Little Wing 😀
Wish i learned to ski😢
This is where I want to be😍 havent been up steamboat in a bit
it was a great winter. I got in over 100 days at The Boat.
Love the skiing videos so much 🙌🏻

he gonna be hangry
Mesmerizing 🤍😍 wish I was there!
At 3:21 as soon as your trekking pole drops, there is a certain sound at the end of the clip😂
I am not at all a fan of heights. How much of this trail is exposed with a death drop to the side? Is it as terrifying as it looks?
No Sir it is not very exposed. Easy to walk up the the summit area.
Nice job! Have you done it from the Royal Basin side?
Not yet but plan on it in the future. My focus this spring is to climb Mystery.
So much for his sobriety, I guess 😕
He's California sober. Just grass man. No alcohol and hard shit.
If you didn't know him smoking you have been living under a rock 😂
@montana47261 wait, so you mean, all this time, that Billy Strings smokes pot? 😱 I'm shocked and appalled. In fact, I don't even believe it. I guess next you're going to tell me that Snoop fella smokes weed too. Dude steps onto the stage and rips through Sabbath and Zeppelin, bluegrass style. That doesn't sound like someone who smokes pot at all, 😅
That's some Squatchy Area for sure. But unfortunately it would be a blurry photo or video. lol. Beautiful area. Live yiur show man!
Thanks Brother. Yes definitely squatchy country. I was considering going back up there next week.
Nice footage. Definitely going to have to add this to my list - for the off season. I imagine it is pretty busy in the summer.
You definitely need to get up there. It never really gets very crowded but my favorite time to get up there is late fall/early winter. Once the snow starts to piles up there is a section that can be difficult to get through without skis.
@@forestdweller512 cool. Hoping to eventually get something like the Altai Hok for that kind of stuff. They’re a Washington based company. Winter can be tricky n the Olympics just because of the wind and trees as big as mountains. But when the weather is good…
@@Olympic_TryAthlete I am driving down to Steamboat Springs tomorrow to work at the Resort for the winter⛷️. Got lots of climbs and backpacking trips planned for when I return to the Peninsula. Still need to knock out Olympus, Constance, and Mystery.
@@forestdweller512 have a great winter there! Sounds awesome. I’m just hoping to do a few winter trips like Cape Alava or the Elwha. Also hoping to get some Montana time this year. Bitterroot’s or the Cabinets.
Very nice. Thanks for the adventure.
Thank you I appreciate it. This was one of my favorite hikes I have been on in recent years.
😂❤
Beautiful day. Is it just me, or was there a slight look of dejection on your face after catching no fish?
It was such a nice day. I was feeling pretty cooked from the sun and the hike up by the time I started fishing🤣. I didn’t really have expectations of catching anything. According to WDFW the lake has neen stocked in the past but I didn’t see any signs of fish.
@@forestdweller512 Have you been to Buckhorn Lake? There were quite a few in it when I was there.
Great footage man! Love your delivery makes me laugh...very dry and as a matter of fact...don't know if you do it on purpose but it makes me laugh...subscribed!
I appreciate it brother.
Nice footage. Narration was great as always. I could watch this video in the middle of summer and I'm pretty sure just doing that would cool me off. Guessing this was Thursday through Saturday (of Friday through Sunday)? I was up at Silver Lake in the Buckhorn and had absolutely gorgeous weather -- but it was cold at night. Had ice crystals all around the lake wherever it was shaded and still someone went skinny dipping in the lake🥶.
Hey thanks brother. Sorry for the late reply. Silver Lake is awesome🎉.
Beautiful! I hope to get up there this year before the snow sets in. Is that a rainbow/double rainbow tent? Ive been eyeing those but worry about condensation. Do you like it?
Nice! I hope you can get up there. This week looks like a number of nice days. Im plotting where to go. May be lazy beach bum and spend a few nights on the coast and have some bon fires. I love my double rainbow. Only downside is crawling in and out. Condensation hasn’t been a huge issue. I purchased the liner they sell and that helps alot. Also I generally only use it for summer backpacking when condensation isint as big issue. Its light and packs down nicely and easy to set up. Made in America with great customer service and the price is affordable. I would highly recommend. I have a number of friends who have purchased one after seeing mine and all love it.
@@forestdweller512that does sound nice. What do you use in the winter?
Pretty nice video. With the quotas in that area (no dispersed camping I’m told by the NPS), looks like quite a jaunt to get to where you can disperse camp. Looks like you were able to find some good solitude. Was this on a weekend or midweek? BTW, you been able to do any adventures 2023?
Now you need to set your sites on the Bailey range traverse . Looks like you had beautiful weather. Thanks from those of us that are now too old to go there anymore.
I hiked the Bailey a few years ago. Beautiful and rugged hike. I loved Ferry Basin. I have a couple videos posted of my Mt. Carrie climbs. Unfortunately I am recovering from a herniated disc in my back and haven’t been able to get out into the backcountry this summer.
Keep in good spirits. In 2001, I broke my ankle coming down to the Dosewallips trail from Deception basin. Took 7 and a half hours to get to the trail. Surgery and steel plate with screws, 13 months later I climbed Rainier. Keep up the physical therapy. God bless.
In old guide books Skyline was described as “ARDUOUS” and “STRENUOUS”.
