The Forgotten Planet - Full Audiobook by Murray Leinster
The Forgotten Planet
Murray Leinster (1896 - 1975)
Full Audio Book read for you by Richard Kilmer (1942 - 2022)
The "forgotten" planet had been seeded for life, first with microbes and later with plants and insects. A third expedition, intended to complete the seeding with animals, never occurred. Over the millennia the insects and plants grew to gigantic sizes. The action of the novel describes the fight for survival by descendants of a crashed spaceship as they battle wolf-sized ants, flies the size of chickens, and gigantic flying wasps. So glad you enjoyed! Other great Conan titles are available here as well and new content is added every week.

Mark Nelson has read for nearly 3000 of these projects. I like his work as well and you will find much more of it on the Thinkplank Channels. So glad you enjoyed! Cheers!

Thank you... I am a little dubious on the artwork on this one but I guess that isn't really what audiobooks are all about anyway. I am always looking for cost effective ways to make improvements.
@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio To be honest I'd prefer a black screen. Thanks for all the uploads 🍻👍🏻
@@jerryjungle5717 Yes... there are many times that I share that sentiment and it would be much easier for me to do. The images are there for multiple reasons. Among those are, to give a fresh look to classic works that often have pretty boring covers, and to show significant change in the basic file for RUclips Monetization requirements. RUclips has declined to monetize this content at this point in time so I am not sure how long I can continue building this library. I always intended this to be FREE for everyone and that this was to be at least a 10 year project. I will keep doing it as long as I can but unless I can find some method of funding it then things may dwindle away. In anycase, please do enjoy what is available. Cheers!
Wow thanks my Momma used to read These as she said " Hid from my librarian mother in the 1930ts lol . She introduced me to the storys in the 1960ts ,dismissed by many in this day as sexist .By Crom be damned , classic forerunner sword and sorcery.I laugh so hard when I see young people espousing there causes, but using the same tropes that Howard used in the 1930ts . anyhow off the soap box thanks for the storys ,
So glad you enjoyed and thank you for sharing this snippet of your background. You make a very good point! Human nature has not really changed that much in the last 100 years and these stories are at the same time a reminder of that and inspiration for us to do better. My goal here is to preserve these classics and you are now a part of helping me to do that... Thank you!
The devil worshipping sons of Shem shot be narrating “Conan.”
Crap narrator. I do not believe that Robert E Howard wrote this. It doesn’t sound like the other stories.
From WIKI... The Hour of the Dragon, also known as Conan the Conqueror, is a fantasy novel by American writer Robert E. Howard featuring his sword and sorcery hero Conan the Cimmerian. It was one of the last Conan stories published before Howard's suicide, although not the last to be written.[1] The novel was first published in serial form in the December 1935 through April 1936 issues of the pulp magazine Weird Tales. The first book edition was published by Gnome Press in hardcover in 1950. The Gnome Press edition retitled the story Conan the Conqueror, a title retained by all subsequent editions until 1977, when the original title was restored in an edition published by Berkley/Putnam. The Berkley edition also reverted the text to that of its original Weird Tales publication, discarding later edits. Later editions have generally followed Berkley and published under the original title.
I was given a copy of death world 1 as a birthday present from my very first girlfriend when I was 11. I am autistic and have read this book over 300 times, i am 46 now. I love Harry Harrison and hope one day they will make a movie of his work. The rights to deathworld were purchased a long time ago, but no movie has ever been attempted. I remember back in the late 1990s looking on Harry Harrison's website hoping that one day they would make the book into reality. Thanks for uploading this.
That is outstanding! I would also love to see Harrison's work on the big screen. For me it would have to be the Stainless Steel Rat series though. (a couple of those are available on this channel as well).
Yay, I haven’t read these. Harrison is such a superior writer. 😍
The sequel, The Ethical Engineer, is also here. Hope you enjoy! There is a third book called The Horse Barbarians, which I will be sure to expedite as soon as it is available to me.
Man, the robot voice you are making That is something👏 Great book though
Since I do not personally do any of the voice work on any of these, I'm afraid I can't take credit for that. This particular book was read for you by Ben Tucker and released in Dec. 2023.
@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio Thanks for posting the audiobook then! Great channel, exciting books which I have never heard about
So glad you enjoyed! I love finding old gems that otherwise might be forgotten and never discovered. Stay tuned for more and bring friends!
Well, Harry was certainly much more prolific than I imagined.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Harrison_(writer) As I was writing a reply, I popped open Wiki to check some facts and got kinda sucked into the info there... Everything I was going to say is there plus tons more so there is the link for anyone who would like to do a deeper dive. Not all of his work is available to me but I will certainly be sharing all of it that I can.
Does anyone know who read this? I dont think it's mentioned.
This particular rendition was read for you by Gregg Margarite (1957-2012). He was a prolific voice talent for these kinds of things and most of his work in this area was done completely voluntarily with no compensation. We all owe him a huge thank you!
Not a great book. Dated, predictable and lacking any interesting characters. A great premise though, done far better elsewhere.
I can appreciate an honest review and that you have detailed exactly why by listing some negative points. I must agree that it certainly is dated.
@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio Thanks for the upload. Love your channel.

Classic ... this and the Skylark of Space are the beginnings of the great Space Operas as a new subset. In these, Doc Smith laid the groundwork for all the great epics we have today.
I love Harry Harrison stories! His Stainless Steel Rat series of books are great! I used to read them in my teens, back fifty-some years ago.
I agree! in fact The Stainless Steel Rat is the first book that I posted here.
Also, check out The Misplaced Battleship... it is one of the more obscure Stainless Steel Rat adventures.
@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio Thanks. I am currently reworking my way through "Doc" Smith's Lensmen series.
You know that you are truly a strange bird, when you know instantly what a Zebriskin Fontima is!
Perhaps rare could replace strange?
at around 8:57: the narrator switched up the irish accent to george by mistake.
LOL... Dunno what to tell you on that. This reading was performed and submitted by Mark Nelson. Since his work was entirely voluntary, I am not inclined to complain too much.
@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio It was just an interesting quirk that made me go back and listen to it again to be sure. So much better than the AI narrators around now.
It was a good catch ... i found it amusing. AI is getting better every day but isn't quite there yet. I am very grateful to these reader volunteers.
@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio And it shows that I was actually listening.

One of the all time greatest SicFi stories of all time. The original Space Opera. No SciFi story ever has imagined a ship more powerful than the Skylark of Valeron. One funny thing is that I recently bicycled in Rock Creek Park.
Nice!
I can't believe I used to think this was good science fiction. Corny dialog and characters, dubious 'science', and golly, what syrupy portrayal of the relationships between men and women.
Personally, I appreciate it as a foundation on which other science fiction and even science fact was built. It was a product of its time and a speculation of the future from that perspective.
I like phil as a narrator.
I do too, at least for classic Sci-Fi. To me, he sounds a bit like an old time radio broadcaster which seems to fit Golden Age fiction just about perfectly. I understand that not everyone agrees, so I often post the same story with different readers to give options. This is most obvious on Thinkplank Brain Bank where there are thousands of short stories to be enjoyed.
Narrator 's reading is awful.
Sadly I get a lot of complaints about the narration. But, I am thankful for what we have until someone who can do better steps up and puts in the work. If you would like to be that someone I would be very willing to entertain the idea of posting your recording.
I love the artwork on this video. Where did it come from and who is the illustrator?
Sadly the artwork is AI generated and is just something I threw together to add some visuals to the audio track (I am not an artist lol). I suppose the good news is that as such, it is public domain and you are welcome to use it in any way you wish.
Worst narrator on the planet.
I would think that even a reader that is less pleasing to the ear is better than no reader at all. You are welcome to read this work in yourself if you believe you can do a better job. If you put in the work to do this, I would consider posting it if our team agrees that your effort is an improvement.
Crap is crap[@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio
Criticism requires very little talent or effort... the offer still stands if you think you can do better.
🥱 @@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio
the narrator would be good for people with insomnia
On one of our other channels, @Thinkplank Brain Bank, we have posted thousands of Short Stories. I know of a couple of people who regularly listen to them at bedtime to help them fall asleep. The sound of a voice may lull a person to sleep or simply put a person into a relaxed mood and this is a healthy break from the often hectic world around us. Personally, I tend to listen to audio books while I workout or drive. For me, the interaction of the story line breaks the monotony of repetitive tasks.
This is so great! The first books I ever collected was the lensman series circa 1966, approx.
So glad you enjoy these! Stay tuned as I have more 'Doc' Smith on the way as well as many other great authors.
This is so great! The first books I ever collected was the lensman series circa 1966.
I do have this book available on Thinkplank Brain Bank in its original form as it was published in Amazing Stories Magazine, but, this is the later and more complete version that was released as the stand alone premiere to a new genre of Science Fiction.
This is so great! The first books I ever collected was the lensman series circa 1966.
It makes perfect sense that you would begin your collection with the books that brought the idea of epic Space Opera to the world.
I take it that the narrator’s mother tongue is not English
I'm afraid that I don't have any significant personal information about Harley James or his lineage. His speech mannerisms seem similar to some that I have encountered in rural parts of the USA.
The writing style reminds me very much of asimov. Liking the story so far.
Smith and Asimov had a great deal of overlap in the times of their prolific writing. Similarities in culture and current events may have influenced them to have similar writing styles. Asimov produced the Foundation Series which would probably be the most directly comparable to the Lensman Series by Smith which you are currently listening to. It is quite possible that Smith paved the way for Asimov in the sense that publishers were more ready to accept the idea of the epic Space Opera after the success of the Lensman Series and its massive scope.
I thought there was at least one more book to the series. CHILDREN OF THE LENS.
You are correct... sadly I do not have access to it at this time. I will of course post it as soon as I can get my hands on it.
@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio I have a copy of the book if you wish to borrow it lol
Thanks for that but I'm afraid it wouldn't help. I am not one of the voice talents but more importantly I think the hold up is actually in the legal department.
Classic sci-fi ranks with the lensman and skylark series by the same author. Asimov, Bradbury delrey Herbert from the late 40s to the 80s all wrote some great stuff.
Awesome! Much of the Lensman series is already available on this channel and Skylark is coming soon! Stay tuned, bring friends, and thanks for having a listen.
A beautiful piece of hard Sci-Fi written some time after ww2, and some time before they discovered that tobacco is a narcotic. It hasn't aged as well as some other stores, but still a very good story, well read too.
Yes... many of these books contain valuable messages for the future along with just being great entertainment but the times and cultures in which they were written must be considered. Somewhere, I have an old physics book that was published in the late 1930s which clearly states that the atom is the smallest particle and cannot be split. It astounds me that this was the generally accepted belief during the time when E.E. 'Doc' Smith was writing his Lensman Series. Much of that series is available on this channel starting with TriPlanetary, presented as it was published as a stand alone book. TriPlanetary is also available in its original form as it was published on my other channel @Thinkplankbrainbank which mostly focusses on short stories... ruclips.net/channel/UCpbtM1Ax7utmPt272JfQNbg
I'm less than half way through, but I'm going to finish it tomorrow for sure :)
I have been having some trouble getting the timestamps and chapter markers to work properly and reliably. I hope you can find where you left off easily. I am told that RUclips is still working on that.
I can't say I was expecting much from this, lousy watch rate, almost no likes, however, this is a great story, it's a slow start but well worth listening to.
Thank you for your comments. This channel is relatively new and Audio Books are not as exciting as explosions or fails etc. so I rather expect it to be a slow start in a world of 15 second attention spans. It is my goal to create this more interactive library to help preserve these classic works in a more interactive format and your likes, comments, and subscriptions, help me to do that.
Thank you very much.!! 👍 👍 👍 Please stay safe out there & the very best wishes from Scotland 🏴 🙏 ❤️
Thank you. You too!... The world can be a scary place. Fiction has always been a safe place as well as a medium to share wisdom and cautions. So glad there are still people who know this.
@@ThinkplankScienceFictionAudio Absolutely.!!! I've suffered from PTSD/Anxiety disorder & depression for most of my adult life, I've struggled with drug addiction & alcohol dependancy & been in some very dark scary places over the years. I'm happy to be able to say that I've got 14 years drug free & 6 years alcohol free under my belt, but to do that I needed to learn a whole new set of coping mechanisms, one of them has been using audiobooks to relax, especially in the evening at bedtime.!! The most effective & enjoyable for me is vintage science fiction... There's just something about it that I find very soothing. I think it's because it's just so optimistic, imaginative, non threatening, positive & hopeful.. Even naive in an endearing kind of way.? Mankind is usually portrayed in a positive manner, we tend to always end up doing the right thing, we overcome great odds & we treat other species we meet along the way with respect & dignity... Anything is possible with vintage sci-fi.. The complicated & fantastical science just simply exists & works as the stories need it to with little explanation given, because non is needed... A ship can hold 1000 people in comfort & travel between the stars because it just can.!.! Complex life & alien civilizations exist on other planets in our solar system like Jupiter or Venus or in distant galaxies because they just simply do.! Vintage sci-fi is so unlike the modern media of today which is full of violence, selfishness, negativity & hate.! Vintage sci-fi is the perfect antidote to modern life.! 😉👍👍 I'm subscribed to a number of other vintage sci-fi channels & I'm so thankful & appreciative of all the hard work you guys do.. I want to thank you personally for the valuable service you provide to people such as myself who get so much benefit beyond merely listening to a story to pass some time.! Channels such as this have become a very valuable part of my nightly routine.! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH & BEST WISHES FROM SCOTLAND 🏴 🙏 ❤️
Wow! Thank you for this very personal testimonial and endorsement. Congratulations on your victories over lifes challenges! You may also be interested in our other Channels... Philip K. Dick foresaw the future ... He was a great man .
I often wonder what he would think if he were to look at the world now and see how many of his predictions came true.
Go phil
For some, the voice of Phil Chenevert can take a bit of getting used to. Personally I think his voice lends authenticity to the times in which the stories he narrates were written.
Phil is my favorite, with Mark Nelson a very, very close second!
