Seated Sideways Carry in a Ring Sling
While almost all videos show a tummy to tummy or tummy to hip positioning in a ring sling, other positions are definitely possible! One position we commonly hold babies in and they often really enjoy is a seated sideways - with both legs together and body at a 90 degree angle relative to the parents chest. It gives baby a bit of a view of the world as well as a better view of caregivers' faces. It also takes pressure off the tummy which is great for reflux, colic or any babies who have had to have surgery and need to not have pressure on their front.
It is also a great position for rocking little ones to sleep, so they can see you and also so their legs are together - great if they are we...

How to get your baby onto your back and back down again on your own! Here is my favourite method for getting baby over and how to adjust the Kahu for a comfortable carry for you and baby. How to Breastfeed or Chestfeed in a Stretchy Wrap

Or more correctly, how to use a stretchy wrap to offer your back support while feeding baby. I actually feel the phrase feeding a wrap is a bit misleading because it implies hands free activity, which simply put isn't possible. Feeding in Slings and Carriers - Safety considerations and How to do it!

The biggest thing to consider when considering combining feeding - be that breastfeeding or bottle feeding - with slings or carriers is how old is your baby? Below 6 months feeding in a sling or carrier will not be hands free nor brain free. We can use a sling as support for your back or as portable breastfeeding pillow but we can not safely achieve hands free feeding. This might be different a...

Carrying outwards facing in the Kahu Baby carrier. Tutorial and comfort checks and tips

I love the KahuBaby carrier, it is such a lightweight, wonderfully comfortable carrier. But I don't love it in this position. While it does inwards (parent) facing really really well and offers a fabulous hip carry and equally fabulous back carry... The outwards position is definitely the weak link in the chain. The reason is the adjustment strap is perfectly placed for adjusting the width for ...

    While I get your argument about putting the waistband high, it defeats the purpose of the waist (or more accurately hip) band which is to be low enough to transfer weight directly to the hips/pelvis to reduce the pull on the shoulder straps.

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings 18 дней назад

      That's is where we have to agree to disagree! For most women at least if they place the band on their hips it will not transfer weight well as it won't get good purchase.... instead inorder to load the weight onto their hips the band needs to be placed inorder to stack it onto the hips. This can be different for men due to the difference in hip shape. So generally men get better results wearing the band slightly lower although again too low and it might not get good purchase to stack and load onto the hips.

    • @SheenSlings

      No, they actually weigh pretty much the same both around 750g. Because all the things that add weight... The padding, the buckles etc are exactly the same and the actual fabric doesn't make a real difference in weight. From weighing a few before answering I think it accounts for 5g difference overall.

    When my daughter was still 3 we still brought this on holiday for her. 😂 I'm now expecting my 4th baby in about a month and I can't find my original one yet (Do have the wrap though!) So I've just ordered the Breeze version because I know with 4 small kids (Oldest is 7), older 3 neurodivergent and home ed, it's goint to be essential every day. Used to use an Ergo but the straps siders kept breaking and it was so annoying to adjust etc. The Izmi is cheaper AND more sturdy. 🙄

    Can you wear a newborn in this? Like from day 1?

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings Месяц назад

      I find it difficult to get a truly supportive fit for a brand new newborn. Unlike a ring sling where you can adjust every part of the fabric width to give full support for little ones back.. this one you can only adjust the overall pouch size and the support at the top... Which means it might well not give enough support across the back for a brand new day 1 newborn. It works best from 6 weeks or so (depending on the little one) when they have a bit more strength themselves and fill the sling a little more. For a day 1 newborn I recommend a ring sling instead because they are far more adjustable and customisable for a truly supportive fit

    This is confusing because isn’t the breeze up until 20kg? So not 2.5years?

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings 2 месяца назад

      So 20kg id what this carrier has been weight tested to. This means that during testing a 20kg weight is placed in the carrier and put on a machine that bounces that carrier and weight 100,000 times very quickly and that the carrier didn't sustain any damage or wear during this process. Weight testing doesn't mean a 20kg 4 year old will physically fit in the carrier... It doesn't mean that their legs will still be adequately supported or that the carrier will reach far enough up their back that it would be safe should they decide to lean back. It's actually quite sneaky that many manufacturers purposefully don't give ages to lead you to believe their product will last for longer than it actually will. My statement of 2.5 years is as a consultant who has seen children of all ages in the carrier and wants to give people a more realistic idea of what is possible. I would say this is also being optimistic, since I made this review I have worked with many families who are already finding this carrier not supportive enough by 2 and are ready to move onto a toddler option. I hope that helps clear up your confusion.

    My baby doesn’t like the M position one bit. She straightens her legs and “stands” up in the sling (all of them… I have 7 now 🤦🏻‍♀️) which makes her head topple backwards. The only time I don’t have to support her head is when she’s asleep. Any tips are very welcome 🙏🏽

    Hi, what do you think about the brand baby covers from Ergo, Hoppediz, etc. and is there a reason why you prefer this particular cover?

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings 2 месяца назад

      I prefer this one just because it works well with all the 130 different slings and carriers in my library and all that I have ever come across. A lot the brand ones are great but often only work on that brand. I have never tried the Hoppediz one, but I had an Ergo one a couple of years back and it was designed to attach to poppers that are on the Ergo carriers so wouldnt work on other brands, or other carriers types. So if you had a wrap and an ergo and were thinking to also buy a ring sling ... A cover that will work with any of your slings would give you more options.

      Thank you for sharing! This carrier (the close Caboo) doesn't offer outwards either. Both carriers are designed for the 4th trimester and carrying newborns in particular so little ones do tend to grow out of both of these developmentally around 4 months or so and generally this is before outwards facing would be possible or advisable anyway. The main difference between the Caboo and the Bliss is the Bliss is a buckle carrier with clips and the Caboo is a little softer for people looking for something closer to a wrap but without the wrapping. I do have a bliss and intend to make a full review soon!

    Hi! Thanks for the vid. I just bought this carrier second hand for my 11 month old and I’ve found the fabric makes harsh marks on his inner thighs and I’m worried it’s hurting him. Have you found that at all or have any advice for how to prevent it? Thanks!

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings 3 месяца назад

      Hi! Thank you for your question. I have seen harsh marks occasionally - not only in this carrier but others too, and almost always it is due to the positioning rather than the carrier. If baby is positioned so weight is on their inner thighs rather than on their bottom then the carrier can rub at the edge on their legs due to that pressure from that shallow seat. The trick is to check that they are sitting fully on their bottom. You can do this like this - sheenslings.com/2021/03/03/how-to-perform-a-pelvic-tilt-to-ensure-your-baby-is-sitting-comfortably-in-their-baby-carrier/ and this will relief the pressure and give them much more space around their legs. You still might see "sock mark" type lines but you should definitely not see harsh marks. Hope that helps Madeleine

    This is fab, thank-you so much! I feel like I've done everything you said and it still feels like my one month old is going to fall out of the sling. If I lean forward, he comes right away from me, and it even feels like he could fall out of the sides. So I have to keep one hand on his back at all times but then I can't get anything done! I love holding him & being close to him at this time and he can't stand to be put down at all. But it doesn't feel safe having him in this carrier. I really want to master it though as I love this carrier so much. I guess I need to figure out why I can never seem to do it up tightly enough!

    Please just no. May cause hip problems. Anhock-Spreiz is very important!

      Hello! Please could you elaborate your comment. Baby is shown in the "spread squat position" (this is the Anhock-Spreiz for the non German speakers) in all 4 positions. In all 4 positions baby is shown with weight on bottom and legs supported so there is no pressure/weight through the developing pelvis. So I am not sure what you are referring to with this comment. I welcome open debate and also evidence for your statements... All 4 positions achieve a spread squat and there is quite alot of evidence on this being a safe and beneficial position... Starting with Dr Fettweis in the 70s right upto a few years ago where a study looked at muscular engagement. Hope this helps for anyone feeling confused or alarmed by this comment

    Thank you for this! The dream also has a linen fabric. Thoughts on this? Would you choose one over the other or would you say they perform similarly?

      I have never tried the linen. I can't even see it on the UK website... Not 100% sure if it was released over here or not. So I can't comment unfortunately.

    Is the Lenny Lamb preschool or Tula preschool “better” in your opinion? I have a 5 year old

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings 4 месяца назад

      Both are fabulous carriers and both will work well for a 5 year old. The Tula is simpler and more firmly padded, the Lenny Lamb is more adjustable and is softer in feel. You can find more info about both on my website (there are full descriptions of each including who they fit best in their individual hire pages (if you go to shop, then hire then look at each of these). Neither is better than the other in all cases but most people will prefer one or the other as they do feel quite different! It depends if you prefer softness or a very firm waistband

      Sorry! My old phone was having issues at this point, I have since upgraded my set up so newer videos are much better. However if you turn on the subtitles it really helps. All the best, Madeleine

    Thank you for this. I have a question. My 7 month old son is quite long and he pulls him arms out from under the shoulder straps and ends up with them over the top. Assume that’s because that is more comfortable for him. Is that a safe position? So the shoulder straps and the sort of neck part are under his armpits if you see what I mean? This doesn’t happen parent facing obviously because his seat needn’t be so deep.

      So provided the material is no lower than directly under his armpits and he is comfortable that is totally fine. I would only be worried if the top of the panel was lower on his chest because then he might be at fall risk... But provided it's right at his armpits it's totally fine for him to have his arms out of that's more comfortable for him

    Hi! Would love if you can review the stokke limas flex :) I have tried the Lennylight, I like it but found the cross back not as comfy as I thought it would be, love the pocket as well. I have the stokke limas but am not as flexible and have a challenge with putting on the back buckle myself but do like my stokke limas compared to others so far so would love your thoughts

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings 5 месяцев назад

      So you don't have to wear the Lenny Lite crossed. It works H shape too. For doing up the straps on this or the Flex ... There are lots of methods that work with different flexibilities. You can see them here ruclips.net/video/uho_dYcppFs/видео.htmlsi=vIGgvVyDTOUUNyNz.

      I have the Stokke Limas Plus but not the Flex so can't review it I am afraid. I didn't buy the flex because when I tried it I just didn't like it as much as other carriers and certainly not as much as the plus.

    Thank you! Very helpful. What about the extra neck support that can buckle on at the top?

    • @SheenSlings
      @SheenSlings 5 месяцев назад

      This is great for supporting the neck as baby grows. You can see how it can be used in my other video demonstrating a front carry with the Beco Gemini for older babies (check out my Beco playlist to find this). For a newborn however it is unlikely you will need it... We need to support baby's neck no higher than mid-ear and for most newborns putting that support up would make the carrier come higher than mid-ear and this potential be a risk to their airway
