    Any help with the lyrics? Yeah, when I was young and a-runnin' around I could get a date with any girl in town I was a tall-[?] mean, fast talkin Mighty [?] But-a things have changed in a-later years A little bit slow, shiftin' gears Old age, rough treatment's takin' it's toll When I first grew up, I was the cock of the walk Makin' every joint in town On the wilder side of life Always slippin' around I was a speed demon daddy with [?] style Zips gone out of my automatic drive Old age, rough treatment's slowin' me down With the chicks in town, I used to strut a-my stuff Picked 'em young and I treated 'em rough I been slippin', in a-later years I've found I'm not the cat I used to be But I know exactly what's wrong with me Old age, rough treatment's slowin' me down When I first grew up, I was the cock of the walk Makin' every joint in town On the wilder side of life Always slippin' around I was a speed demon daddy with [?] style Zips gone out of my automatic drive Old age, rough treatment's slowin' me down

    What are the chances of hearing this song this song from two different sources within a couple of hours of each other? It happened to me ten years ago on a trip to visit a friend. I played an oldie cd with Op on it. An hour and a half after I arrived at my destination, my friend was playing some used 45’s that he had recently picked up. “Op” was one of them. I rushed into the room and exclaimed that I had just played that same song just a few hours earlier! Probably one of the most remarkable coincidences that have occurred in my life.

    Oscar's acerbic wit(fueled by his monster of a father) carried him through everything even if he had to claw his way up from his mental health abyss. If you want a incredible bio about him - A Talent For Genius: The Life and Times of Oscar Levant - I highly recommend it.

    I played 1st trumpet in my high schools dance band and we played a greatly simplified version of this piece as a finale in our concerts and competitions. It was a difficult piece and we rarely did any justice to it.

      Yes, I have seen it several times. I watch it for the music and for Oscar Levant. The story, unfortunately, is way too fictionalized. Too much serious romance going on. Gershwin didn’t take enough time to get that serious about any woman. There was no love triangle. The movie added a lot of schmaltz and sentimentality, all probably to satisfy what the studio felt the movie’s audience would want to see, rather than the reality. I thought Robert Alda wasn’t a good choice to portray Gershwin. He did the best he could, but…

    That is simply unmatched in my experience. I can’t decide at some points if this simply the definitive interpretation or an attempt at deconstruction of Gershwin. Regardless, it’s breathtaking.

    Here’s my two cents as a piano teacher. Oscar, do you have a train to catch? Too fast tempo, imo. Even Paul Whitemam had to argue with Gershwin over the tempo. Gershwin plays it like the meter is running in an expensive taxi. Whiteman greatly slowed down the piece. When this amazing composition is slowed about 10 to 20 bpm, you can hear all of Gershwin’s amazing fills. Also, there are few dramatic pauses missing - short silences before a climax. Premature climax lol. It’s,easy to understand why Oscar played at breakneck speed. He copied Gershwin’s tempi. But Whiteman was correct, imo, when he told Gershwin he was going to play it at a speed the audience would appreciate. I appreciate Oscar’s virtuosity, but it leaves me emotionally dry.

    • @bwsmyhero
      @bwsmyhero 11 месяцев назад

      Who is more correct-the composer, or the conductor? Don’t you think Gershwin knew how he wanted his own composition to be played? Anything else is arrogance, to assume one knows better than the creator how it should be done. It’s a matter of opinion and interpretation.

    I wish WNDZ was still like this. Starting in the fall of 2007, most of their day became filled with Spanish religion (which was dropped during COVID). WNDZ was heavily Eastern European before that. Two shows (on Saturday) are the only remnants of the old-WNDZ. I think there's some shows like that on Sunday too.

    This recording was also released as a 78rpm multi-disc record album. Oscar was a musical genius, taught by composer Arnold Schoenberg. When Oscar travelled to Hollywood, Oscar became friend with George Gershwin himself, and became a masterful interpreter of Gershwin's works. Oscar was also a composer and wrote the hit song "Blame It on My Youth. Unfortunately Oscar was a chain smoker, suffering from neuroses that led to hospitalization and was considered a hypochondriac. In his later years Oscar appeared on a lot of tv talk shows.
