Swanage Railway official photographer and volunteer Andrew P.M. Wright has recorded the rebuilding of the Dorset heritage line for more than 30 years. Here, Andrew shows just how much work has gone into the building of Harman's Cross station since late 1987when the relaid tracks reached the three-mile point from Swanage on their way to Corfe Castle. Upgrading and Signalling the Wareham Link for the Swanage Railway
A very interesting presentation. I remember seeing trains leaving Swanage in 1968 whilst on holiday. In 2018, I arrived at Swanage on a West Coast Railway Special Top and tailed between two of their class 47s. I joined the train at Swinton in South Yorkshire! It was a very good tour which allowed a decent amount of time in Swanage. The train was two long for the station, so the Swanage Railway trains had to use the bay platform. It's good to see a heritage railway connected to the main network.
We sometimes forget the 'impossible' task that we overcame. Its Harmans by the way ;)
When I was 16 back in 1984 I was a yts trainee for British rail I was a junior railman at Hove in east Sussex I worked on the platform for 3 months and am happy to say before the three bridges takeover of the signals I worked in Hove box for 3 months I loved running the mainline in a lever box from Brighton tunnel to Shoreham by sea b box it was all levers and bells and buttons 😊 I was sad when it all got modernised you brought back that memory for me thank you...ps i was working under gudance of signalman ...great memories 😊
Building a Emett railroad in Gn15 I would like to buy copys of trainpictures of Rowland Emett. Is that possible? Please information my.🧐 Thanks a lot!
Shame the video was ruined by the chap in a skirt making that god awful din!!! 😖
I hope the restoration of that beutiful engine works out.
way did they just paint over the old paint rather than remove it and put on a new coat
very good!
Glad you think so!
Looking good mate you are nailing though transitions
Thank you for those kind comments
"Bill and Ben" were certainly the most fascinating and fun to watch, sliding around lol. However the one I wish i hadnt missed was the Schools Class visit in 2015. What a sight that must have been !
Excellent video work truly stunning scenery go down there quite often but the railway carriages for refreshments has gone thought they were where the train pulled in perhaps now line open fully they needed the space
I had always wanted to visit the Swanage Railway but I never got the chance until one of the ferries serving the Channel Islands was cancelled. As we were going to be delayed for a couple of days my family and I decided to make the most of the opportunity by visiting the railway. I was fortunate enough to have met Mike when he was acting as a signalman at Corfe Castle. Mike allowed my son and I to see inside the signalbox and took a great deal of time to explain to us how everything worked. Unfortunately, I never made a note of Mike's name but I did take 3 photos of him on the platform accepting a token from an arriving train. What an incredible stroke of luck it is that after all these years I'm finally able to put a name to the face of such a lovely man!
Hi Doug. Thank you so much for your kind comments on my Video on Signalling the Link. It was my priviledge to show you the inside of Corfe Castle Signal Box. Sadly the long-anticated 90-Day Trial Service between Wareham and Swanage, using the Link, will not now take place until 2023. Although I am not as physically fit as I was when we met, I still act as Signalman at Harmans Cross, Corfe Castle and Norden Gates on occasions, as well as the Museum Signal Box at Corfe Castle (where visitors can work the lever frame). Please call on us again without waiting for a ferry to the Channel Islands to be cancelled! Kind regards, Mike Walshaw
Always nod my head to my late father Keith who worked so hard with the peeps down there to get Swanage Rly's signalling up to NR levels and he with the old man pretty much wrote Swanage Rly's current signalling order, it was a blessing for him that after forced early retirement from BR Swanage gave him a second go and a return to lever work. He left BR the most passed out SR signalman even at F grade he maintained several boxes that he would be asked to go relief for and he was the embodiment of the BR rule book.
Seeing the 33 there reminded me of the days off spent with my father and my uncle, they had their little pastel books and a Party Seven on tap where they would spot test each other on their routes etc as my uncle was then a 33 driver at Hoo Jnc and my father working relief from Hoo. A different era and sometimes in the summer holidays I was allowed to go off with uncle who worked mainly down the Sheppey industrial lines, taking Ford trains to Olympia or glass and steel wagons to Hither Green, bit of shunting at Sheerness or the horrendous drop alongside the Queensborough docks spur... happy days :D
Excellent presentation can appreciate the work gone into this.
Thanks Mike for this presentation. Very inspiring, so yesterday I sourced a copy of Emetts Early Morning Milk Train for some inspiration creating my own version of a layout. Mine will be 009 so all scratch built. I discussed it with my father and he remembers traveling on the Emett train at the Festival of Britain in the 1950's. Thanks for putting all this together Mike.
Hi, Thank you so much for your comments. I have a copy of that book, too! By the way the layout will be on show at the Basingstoke Model Railway Exhibition at the Aldworth Science College, Western Way, Basingstoke on Sat/Sun 12/13 March
Very interesting from Sydney Australia
Glad you enjoyed it
What amazing dedication to a fantastic project, congratulations to all involved
Great to see the diesel gala is back. Any thoughts on steam gala?
At the current time, we at the PRC do not know, as soon as anything is announced we will post on our channel
@@prcvideo4071 thanks for that.
Maybe the Department for Transport or whatever the current admin call it should permit heritage lines that connect to the network run a regular passenger service. Note not ‘customer’ use of English.
Yes indeed. We have that permission and hope to start services next summer subject to the usual conditions.
Hooray for the Permanent Way!
Indeed! Thanks for you comment.
If I took a train to Wareham how would I get onto that heritage line? Is there some reason steam doesn't run west of nordon?
Once the trial service is running again, you will be able to change trains at Wareham. Keep looking at the main railway website for details on when this will be operating www.swanagerailway.co.uk
@@prcvideo4071 swanage by rail is on my bucket list and if one can throw in a day riding on Steam trains then so much the better. Looking forward to it this summer - I only live in Southampton so it's a nice ride out to Wareham.
How many large railway crane's do they have ??
There are currently 3 large cranes based o the line
Nice catch you done there. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching
@@prcvideo4071 Thanks very much for replying to my comment. It's nice to see other people's work to get idea to improve my channel. Take Care & Stay Safe
Very nice and thank you for keeping Mr. Emett's marvelous, oh so English whimsy alive.
Glad you enjoyed it
An excellent video presentation and very informative. Good luck with the regular service to Wareham next year.
Fingers crossed!
Er, it’s 2 73’s pushing the 4TC not a 33, but very informative
How it should be done. Superb presentation and learned so much about the work done. So good to see the efforts of all those hard working enthusiasts complete a dream
Thank you very much!
Great video Andrew. Thank you.
Good for you chaps. Couldn’t read all the text though…….
We have posted the full text below as well
PROJECT WAREHAM UPDATE STATEMENT FROM THE PROJECT WAREHAM DIRECTOR, SWANAGE RAILWAY The Swanage Railway continues to make preparations for the introduction of a second one-year selected-days passenger train service between Swanage and Wareham, where a connection will be made with South Western Railway main line services. It is now our intention to initially operate the new Wareham service over 90 days between April and October 2022 using our Diesel Multiple Units, which have been overhauled to main line condition thanks to a grant from the Government’s Coastal Communities Fund. This grant has also enabled essential work to be carried out on upgrading the track and infrastructure between our existing limit of passenger operation at Norden and the junction with Network Rail’s London to Weymouth line near Wareham. Full details on days of operation and ticketing arrangements will be announced nearer the time. Mark Woolley, Project Wareham Director, Swanage Railway 27 July 2021 PS: The delay until 2022 has of course been caused by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

They need to get passenger trains running that line again - sad to see those old historic signal boxes go

Looking forward to riding the line this summer!
Great little video, thanks! I was on board that visiting double-headed Cl.50 special as a member of the loco support crew. Was good to meet up with a few of my old pals at Swanage that day.
Hopefully you will be back for the Diesel Gala in May
I can see the third rail obviously you have a link to the main network, great many heritage lines deserve one. Thanks great video!
Thank you very much!
Interesting. Thanks for your insight into all the various elements needed to upgrade your branch to permit interconnection with NR.
Superb, and utterly enchanting. I was one of many, many people lucky enough to visit the Birmingham Gas Hall debut of 'Cloud Cuckoo Valley' in 2014 - I took my grandson and a friend, both of whom were captivated by the inventiveness of the contraptions. It had to be the happiest event ever held in the Gas Hall - the ticket clerk told me she had yet to see anyone leaving without a smile on the faces. Thank you Mike, and thank you, Rowland Emett, wherever you are now.
Glad you enjoyed it and that it brought back memories.
This has been a great achievement by all those involved.
Excellent video. Thanks Mike.
