Blue Monday - Is Moyes the right choice or the easy choice for Everton?
Les, Dave, and Rodger discuss Everton's new owners doing a very Everton thing by going back to an old manager. Is it an indication that the club will never change? Can Moyes get any more out of these players or does he need to bring in some new ones? And now will he work with Thelwell?

Great pod as always, regarding what you said will happen with Moyes & Thelwall, it will be interesting to see what happens. At Moyes at West Ham sid Moyes try and use his network, or did that slow down or stop at West Ham with a DOF? Surely in the meantime at Everton, I'd imagine Moyes will want to bring in a couple of plays he knows & trusts like any Manager would in order to do a job?

rodger spot on about how unpleasant it feels to know dyche was difficult on the way out. pair that up with the overwhelming negativity he's been peddling in interviews all season long, i.e. the constant downplaying. and i don't enjoy feeling so much venom but... oof... i really dislike dyche for the way he's behaved this season. and it's unfortunate because had he just kept up his standards from last season (both on the pitch & in the press room) then i think we all would have been somewhat okay with it just to see us over the line. it would've been a job well done honestly. i had this idea in my head of dyche being a steady influence from the last season at goodison into the first season at BMD but he really made a fool of me. his behaviour this season has been what i would say is immature. there's no other word for it. it's like he resented us, i.e. the fans, the club itself, he thought very highly of himself and very lowly of the club. and that brings me to moyes... some of the stuff he's said has been night and day vs what dyche has been saying. it's just a huge relief to hear somebody play up the status of the club, the extent of our ambitions, and even the talent of the playing squad--while also reminding said players that we need commitment and hard work from them. i don't mind moyes getting a couple of seasons to rebuild, seems quite sensible. he knows his own age, and he conceded he's not gonna be at the club 11 years this time around. seems like he really wants to rebuild and hand the club off in a better state. i can't fault him for that. that's fine. and as for comparing him and dyche in terms of style and approach and tactics--i remember the moyes safety first subs. we all remember what it was like. but, and people can be mad, it's nothing like dyche. it's levels above. and it evolves. like where moyes got at times with mobile wingers and overlapping fullbacks is just nothing dyche would dream of. and we saw that on thursday with baines and coleman--the ball was suddenly on the deck, and the fullbacks clearly had more freedom. but that brings me to my one concern and then i'll wrap up today's essay... signings. can we have overlapping fullbacks who are pushing 40? can moyes get something out of patterson? if not, then i almost feel like fullback is as much of a priority as centre forward. and we're just going after nuamah from lyon... who, i want, of course i do. and a left footed right winger will be great... we definitely need a right winger... but do we need one more than fullbacks? do we need one more than a centre forward? anyway! well in lads. hope everybody gives moyes a chance. he wasn't my first choice, but i think it makes sense in the context. and then hearing what he said, vs what dyche has been peddling all season long, i went from accepting of it to happy with it.

Moyes or not, I really hope there's some parallel planning going on. A plan that plots a clear pathway forward, including a shortlist of ALL desirable managers with a view to achieving long term success, starting right now. That success, to me, would entail regular Champions League football and deeper runs in the FA Cup. This pathway must also incorporate an identity, an Everton way if you like. A way of playing, and as an organisation, a way of operating, that future players and staff will find an attractive proposition to be a part of. - That culture is absolutely the responsibility of our new owners because the culture trickles down from the top...#UTFT💙

A point I haven't seen many make, is which "decent" manager would have fancied the Everton job? I am all for Moyes, but being practical about it, we're not going to get a top manager now as much as many would have wanted. Yes, the new stadium may have been tempting, but the prospect of coming in and NOT rescuing them from relegation would seriously damage a decent manager's reputation. That said, Moyes IS a decent manager. Any nit picking about trying to pinch players from Everton is pointless.

Hello thanks for the interesting vid about DM.I do like to pop in to the Blue Monday, sometimes to see what's going on with the Toffees. Anyway, I think David Moyes is still highly regarded with WHU fans in general, not only for the trophy, but for his community work in the area during the Covid lockdown. We did improve a lot during his 2nd stint. (The first was also important;, of course, saving us from the drop) What can't be overlooked is the terrible second half of last season. We were shipping in so many goals, his position became impossible: 74 goals, a club record in the EPL era. The football was turgid and we weren't defending properly. He also fell out with our director of football and banned him from the training ground, though Lopetegui did the same thing. It will be interesting to see how he gets on with your DOF or will he be in sole charge of the squad and its dealings? He's now very experienced, but he's not the dynamic young coach of 15 years ago, but the dog of war has probably picked up a few new tricks. I think he's a safe pair of hands, as you mentioned,. He might lay some good foundations. We have some good youth players coming through, but things can go stale, so short term is the best bet.

I find it surprising that there is negativity around Moyes and a wish to switch for an ambitious young manager. Firstly, what makes people think that they would or to the club. Secondly, with no real finances available due to PSR, and a rebuild needed, the club needs rebuilding first. My hope is that Moyes stays for the next few years, subject to doing well, sorting out the club and the structure to be able to hand the reins over then to an up and coming manager, perhaps stepping to another club role to help guide a new manager. This change will take more than one full season and the rest of this season is a write off. Hopefully, a few years, building up the team, pulling off some transfers within the finance constraints and creating a new foundation, but patience will be key…. Come on you toffees…
