Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI Review - Still the benchmark ?
Просмотров 19 тыс.3 года назад
Hi everyone, I had the opportunity to test the new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI for a day, and I tried to make the most out of it. This pretty much is a one take with my thoughts on the car. I am really sorry in advance for the mic quality (wind noise also) and video stabilisation ! It was recorded on an IPhone held by my partner doing her best to keep it together. Definitely going to invest in a Go P...
hate all the shiny plastic above the virtual cockpit screen but below the cowl, looks so cheap vs a 7.5 or an 8v s3.
opf/gpf does a good job silencing that, my s3 has no opf/gpf and is a LOT louder, all that sound in your car is from the Soundaktor.
I'm in the same car as you. But it is my vacation and after work car. Extremely versatile in stock form. The EA888 gen 3 engine with the DQ381 transmission are a perfect match. I have had zero repairs or complaints with this car. At 25k miles and maintenance has been the recommended interval fluid changes and rear brake pads and rotors so far.
Seems quite early to change rotors. I'm on more mileage and when it comes to brakes all that has been done is a flush and new fluid. Did your rear pads degrade and somehow damage the rotors?
@@ZenzDeluxe I didn't notice scoring before and I doubt the pads were worn to the backing plate...just getting low. Replaced rotors at the same time for minimal extra cost, the calipers were off anyway, no one really offers resurfacing of rotors around here anymore
Credit to you. Looks brand new. Lovely car
An equivalent Audi a3 costs only 10% more. Might as well go for that.
Get a jetta GLI and tune it stage 1, will cost much less than a A3 and have even more power lol
can you talk a bit slowl.... i
not his first language dont be rude, also theres a button which you can speed up the video! use your brain!
Nice video! The suspension looks a bit technical! how much do you think it might cost to replace the suspension after a while?
I'm wondering about this too. I have a Mk7.5 Golf R with DCC and those active dampers can't be cheap to replace. I only have 36000 miles on the car but I plan to own the car for as long as I can.
I have no idea, but I assume it would be quite expensive to replace, especially at a VW dealer. If you are concerned you can still call the dealership to ask for a quote. You might sleep better, … or worse :).
The factory front and rear dampers, idk. But a popular option is to replace with Bilstein's B4 (~1,100EU) or B6 (~1,300EU) series dampers. Both designed to be plug and play with the factory drive mode controller and factory springs. Most likely less expensive than the OEM parts at the dealership.
@@chriskelvin248 About to hopefully get a DCC 7.5 this weekend (if VW can finally finish doing the waterpump/thermostat) and good to hear that there are some other options. Didnt realise that the Bilsteins were plug and play. Thought they were controlled separately in some way - so good to know.
Excellent review! You should put out more content! I just bought a used 2019 R yesterday. Love it so far. We have 2 big pickup trucks and a 4runner suv. The R will serve as our sporty but practical fun car.
is it avg 9.4 on open roads? I wonder what would be the consumption in worst city jammed up traffic, in eco mode.
Eco mode is great in heavy snow or rain, literally granny driving.
Yes, good point indeed !
That's not a MK 7.5. It's a MK 7.
It is definitely a 7.5. The spec could differ pending the country in which it’s sold.
Fantastic review. I'm in the process of buying a Golf R and your review is very informative - thank you. (With such high quality I would welcome more content from you 🙂 )
Ow thank you :)
The exterior says 7.5 R with 7 wheels. But the interior is 7R I’m so confused 💀
maybe they were like that for the first 7.5 model year in Europe, since they got it before other markets? purely speculating
He probably retrofitted the nav screen
Guys, that’s how the 7.5 was specced in Europe. What doesn’t seem right to you? The LED lights were new for 7.5, the screen as well. We could stick with the old speedo, instead of the new virtual cockpit if we wanted, which is what I did. The « 7R » rims were always available even for the 7.5R. I’m curious to know which 18 inch rims were specific to 7.5R. Maybe in your country they were only sold with 19 inch Pretorias.
Very detailed & objective review! Had my GTI Clubsport MK7 for about 5 years. Started modding it when warranty was out & im still modding it! Latest big thing was a full custom turbo back which we installed ourselves. Its a Cobra Sport non resonated catback on sport muffler mated with a Invidia highflow downpipe on sports cat, which sounds Glorious together! So definetly recomend going this route if your skilled on car installs, or know someone who can help you! Also the car is Stage 1 at 370 hp 480 torque or so, been thinking going stage 2 but im pretty happy with the build now. Next thing will likely be a integrated engineering carbon intake & inlet, for the downpipe to breathe best possible. Then maby a TVS Engineering TCU tune for the DSG automatic gearbox! 😎 👍
From where are you in luxembourg? I do live here
I think it looks better in life trim without the extra chrome and fake exhaust pipes.
O9
Great inside into this car ! 😃
Excellent review mate! I have a moonstone grey autobahn 6-speed manual on "order" but am considering the switch to King's red!! Wanted the R but here in Canada it's 10K more!
How much did you pay for the brakes?!
It was around 1500€ for the 4 discs, pads and labor at VW!
yeah i thought i heard 4500 euros and i almost COLLAPSED
Felt similar to you with my 2020 Golf R and then I got a tune resulting in a 30% power bump and a Remus cat-back for the sound. Transformed the car! At its price point it's hard to beat until you have Porsche $$$!
Clearly these upgrades make a lot of sense. Enjoy your car !
Great review. I enjoyed the drive near the end and ambient music was an excellent choice!
better title- Golf 8 GTI Review EXTREME CLOSE UP edition!!
show us the car not your face
Considering that this is around 100kg heavier than the mk7, did you feel any difference in weight when driving it? In terms of how nimble and throwable around corners it is
Its funny that manufacturers resist touchscreens for a long time saying they are dangerous. Then they make such a busy touchscreen - of course its dangerous when they design it that way! I think its the manufacturer that does not know how to use touchscreens to the driver's advantage.
I LOVE MY GOLF GTI MK8🤩🤩🤩
What the hell is that chip engine cover? It look VW bought it from a car washing station.
You don't see it 99.9% of the time who cares what it looks like
That's how I see it too 🤷
@@caffeineisking8132 it’s starts with engine cover , continue with glovebox without interior fabric, rearview mirror with large frame and so on Maybe you right about the engine cover but when i purchased a Golf GTI i want more. Don’t get me wrong. This is beautiful and very very fun car to drive (i took the GTI MK8 for a test drive).
@@kobi6y6 Yeah engine cover empty no VW logo. Lol
A well-done review. I enjoyed watching!
Great review! Just moved to Luxembourg and I am on the fence between a GTI and an R. Both will take 4 months to be delivered unfortunately.
Wow nice.
There is a good reason why it takes a bit of button pushing to turn the ESC off.
Well, on the Golf 7.5R it's a physical button. Makes it a lot easier to go ESC sport
A very enjoyable honest review. Good camera work too. Thanks.
Would you choose one over the golf r ?
Well, really depends what you are after. In terms of every day usability and all around performance the Golf R really is one notch above the GTI. But again, as I didn't drive the Golf 8 R, I can't really say. What I would say is that the match is not between GTI and R, but rather GTI Clubsport and R. The question is whether the 4wd is important to you
Great review, thank you posting. Really clear HQ video too!
Thanks for the nice words !
I like this review, and the car...hope you will continue, would be nice to see your 7.5 R to start off
Hey, thank you! Yes, my 7.5 Golf R is up next. Some other cool cars are planned as well
Great video, have a Moonstone Grey on order; pretty much the same spec as yours... You've alleviated some worries I had with your descriptions and comments; well done.
Thanks for the kind words :). It's not actually mine, and I will go for a Clubsport instead. But congrats! I hope you will enjoy the car as much as I did, really great car to be honest.
You might have convinced me, maybe I'll get one 👍🏻
Thanks for this nice video. I think I will buy the new Golf 8 GTI, but in Italy the price is much higher than others countries.
Here in Portugal the based price is 45000 euros
Come ti trovi con la macchina? La mi arriva tra un mese
@@m.d.1643 Sono molto contento. Colore rosso, cerchi da 19 Adelaide, sarà l’ultima della sua specie con motore turbo benzina. Il futuro ci riserva purtroppo solo ibride ed elettriche, con zero sound.
Did you have any glare coming off of the piano gloss plastic around the dash? I fear driving with the sun behind you may be blinding with all that gloss around the dash
Hi Brandon, well I get your concern but we didn't encounter this issue at all while driving ! I can add that under all circumstances were the screens 100% readable. Also I get that people find it cheap looking in pictures but once inside, it makes for a very pleasant cabin
@@carengineer3734 that's great to hear thanks and excellent review!
Don’t worry, all the fingerprints and scratches will diffuse the glare.
Fuel consumption?
Well, if you drive sensibly around 6-8 L/100km is feasible. On short drives or sportier driving expect 9-11L/100km.
@@carengineer3734 that’s super impressive economy considering my 1.6T is about the same. And this EA888 has way more power and torque.
You can actually click the temperature slider with two fingers, this will turn on the heated seats. Also you can bind the ESC off to the swipe down menu, just long-click one icon, and others options will appear. Nice video.
Ha thanks for the tip about the temperature mate. I only learned about the shortcut for the ESC later unfortunately..
