Two of the many stops along the Pony Express Trail, The Overland Stage Station which is now fenced off and Cold Springs. Both are areas the mail carriers would stop and exchange horses for another 5 to 10 mile run. Both locations are within 50 miles of Austin, NV. This weekend we did the Parker AZ Annual Float on the Colorado River. Talk about fun, this was a blast and would do it again. Everything was very organized too. After parking the car, we gathered our gear and walked a few yards to the check in area then boarded an air-conditioned bus that drove up to Buckeye State Park. This is where the float started. They had air available to blow up any size...

Tourists can be stupid about such things. They think everything is Disneyland and they are always safe. Ive come across plenty of travelers who have underestimated the size, remoteness, or the unforgiving nature of a place and end up in trouble, sometimes serious trouble because of it. Some were sick from the altitude and sun on PCT route, some were lost in the desert, without food and water, and way over their head in terms of terrain and navigation. I one cam across a small group standing in the spillway, 50 feet from the edge of Vernal Falls in Yosemite. They had no idea how close to death they were. Warning signs all around, and a fence they had to bypass to get there. They wouldn’t come back either. It was making me sick to think one or more might go over. I saw a bunch of Asian tourists get off a bus and walk out onto the ice at Twin Lakes in Mammoth, way out. Warning signs all around, but there they went. Wouldn’t come back either. One guy jumped up and down on the ice, not 50 feet from open water. Some people just don’t have any common sense. What pisses me off, is when they go missing or get killed, SAR has to go get them and put themselves at risk because of someone’s galactically poor judgement.
