Changing the Spring on the Specialized Diverge | Future Shock 1.5 Spring Swap - Improves handling?
In this video, I walk you through how to change the spring in the Specialized Diverge equipped with the Future Shock 1.5. If you're looking to improve the handling and stiffness of your Diverge, this simple upgrade might make a big difference!
I've personally struggled with the handling and predictability of the Diverge. To address this, I swapped the stock spring for a heavier-weighted one in the Future Shock system. The goal? A stiffer front end for better control and a more predictable ride.

Hi, nice set up! What does your bike weigh in at? Just curious. Thanks
Those roads you showed would be so much faster on the maximum tire size you could fit.
I'm a crazy guy. I do this with my Stumpjumper Expert and a 1400-gram carbon wheelset with fast-rolling tires. 😁
Seems like a pretty smart decision to me. If you are not racing why not enjoy the comfort on a full suspension. Just hate riding the stump on the road
If you had put Schwalbe Thunder Burt tyres 2.1 on the Crux, there would have been no need to buy the Diverge if you ask me;-) Gives all the comfort you need and are faster on tarmac than any gravel tyre
Thats a big tire. I wonder how much that would impact the road riding. I tend to do a lot of road miles on the Crux as well. Sounds like I need two wheel sets.
@@2_Pedals I first tried the 2.2 Continental Race King and didn't fit but the 2.1 Thunder Burts do. 2.0 mtb tyre would be ideal but they are hard to find. To be on the safe side I've cut off part of the knobs on the left rear (Dylan Johnson tip;) Easy to do, so now even when the frame flexes when out of the saddle I'm sure it does not touch the frame. Of course the clearance is not a lot but I did not have any problems and I have tried many tyres on the Crux but these are amazing. I used a redshocks suspension stem and seatpost before for an ultra gravel race but with these tyres I don't use any of it as I feel these give more comfort than the suspension. Used it for Badlands ultra race and worked out great and plan to use it for Unbound next year when it's a dry edition. I also use them on tarmac and you can check on www.bicyclerollingresistance.com that mtb tyres are faster than any gravel tyres. Also the Silca tyre pressure adviser is very useful and accurate matching to the terrain you're riding.
@@2_Pedals I've also brought the weight of my Crux down to 6.7 kilo so this helps as well I feel for how the bike behaves and it's a dream
I have a Diverge STR, I changed the front chainring to a 46t for more top end speed. The roads in California are trash so the future shock work well.
The STR is next on my list of bikes to try. I do have a hard time seeing the point of the STR vs an Epic. But you definitely cannot pedal an Epic very fast on the road.
I've had the same bike for a year, just swapped the tyres out. The Pathfinders are brilliant and super fast in dry conditions, but add some wet mud however and you will be spinning the back wheel and have no grip due to the slick centre line of the tyre. I've put on some 45mm Panaracer Gravel Kings which I can run at less than 30 psi. I now feel much more confident on all types of terrain but particularly going down hill on the rough stuff. They are probably not as quick on the road but I still have no problems cruising along at 30 km ph on flat roads. I would still like to get an extra wheel set for just pure road riding though, some nice 50mm carbon wheels with a set of 30/32mm GP5000 tyres on and then I think this bike can do everything and do it really well.
This is great info thanks. I do think tire choice is the main separator on these bikes. If you have the wrong tire for the wrong type of riding it will make all the difference.
How does the difference in geometry of the bikes feel? I’m personally also considering getting the diverge comp
Very interesting the GEO between the two bikes on paper it looks very similar but the Diverge rides like a smaller framed bike even though they are both 58. I would have thought that GEO would have been much more relaxed and upright on the Diverge vs Crux but its actually very similar. The only big thing I have noticed is the Diverge does feel longer and you get that added stability of a longer bike when going fast.
@ Nice! How tall are you? Is the 58 a good fit?
I have a Diverge and also three road/race bikes. The Diverge is the most comfortable to ride of the bunch and I have set a number of KOMs with it. It isnt slow, but it isnt a road race bike either. For fast gravel i usually ride on 42s, for chunky gravel to pretty gnarly singletrack I have 650b wheels with 2.1"/53mm Pirelli tires, and on the road i ride on 30mm road slicks. It is a very capable bike. I replaced the riser handlebar with a narrower gravel bar from Pro and upgraded to a more flexy seatpost, and added some Roval carbon rims. All in, it is an excellent bike. I hope you enjoy yours as much as i enjoy mine.
Ya I find the more I ride the Diverge the more and more I enjoy. Definitely not a road bike but makes all those rough gravel roads so much nicer to ride and enjoy. I do want to get some carbon wheels for the Diverge though I did notice that the aluminum ones it came with were a bit soft.
Looking where you are riding, think this makes total sense! Yes, larger tyres will help, but never as much as the Future Shock (ice larger tyres). I am driving the STV version, and I love it. Good luck with the channel!
Thanks man appreciate it. Do you find the STV version is worth it?
Yeah it sound a little silly, should have simply tried wider tires on crux, it would still be faster on tarmac due to more aggressive geometry
Right sounds like tires are the biggest thing. I still have the Crux so will have to throw so wider tires and see how it rides.
You should have bought a lightweight, flatbar mtb.
I have a Specialized Epic hanging in my garage. It’s a blast on dirt trails and roads. Just zero fun to ride on the road.
I ride some pretty gnarley gravel & single track in uk, I put some 650b wheels with 50mm tyres setup tubeless on my crux & rides awesome around 30psi. I can still manage to keep up on pretty fast road group rides with this combo but tend to push psi up to about 45. It's a good compromise for me as still weighs in at only 7.6kg and feels alot of fun.
That sounds like quite the tire setup. Sometimes though I feel like it would be easier to take my mountain bike out when the roads get really rough.
Will it fit 2.2 or 2.1 650b tyres?
Your crux can take 47mm tyres, just like the diverge can. That might make a big difference how it feels offroad.
Ya I bet that would make the ride super smooth. Wondering how much slower I would be on the road though. I do a fair amount of riding on tarmac so gotta make sure im not too slow.
@ if you figure that out, it’s a valuable formule for lots of people, lol. I just saw a vid (in dutch) about gravel tyres, but for races. I think it depends on what you value most, more speed on gravel vs more speed on tarmac or something in between. There’s no ‘do-it-all’ tyre. The most preferred size is 45mm at the moment (for races), using a low profile , like schwalbe g one rs pro. I think the ones from specialized are good also. Tbh i think you’ll hardly notice more resistance from those tyres in 38 vs 45mm on tarmac, even with 45mm on lower pressure. The 45mm will be better (comfort, control) on gravel.
Just put 650b wheels with a 2.1 tyre on your crux and you probably have a smoother ride then your diverge
@@2_Pedalsunless you are pushing 300 watts on average, I doubt that tubeless wide tires will be any slower even on the tarmac, than the same, but narrower tires. I would change the tires for 47/48 without even trying 38s. In fact, 47s were the narrowest tires on my gravel bikes. With one exception, which are 42 slicks on my road wheelset 😅
Nice vid. I'm considering getting a Crux or the new Aspero. I've read some posts from Crux owners that say it feels 'noodly' and sketch off road. If I get one, I'll just ride it on road and smooth gravel roads. I'm 6'2" so a 58 should be perfect for me.
The Aspero is next on my list of bikes to try. The Crux hasn't ever felt noodly for me off road, it does have a smaller bottom bracket which gives a little bit more flex off road but overall I feel like its a pretty predictable bike on dirt. I think the Roval wheels help with this they are stiff and provide great feedback on the dirt, I find some of the cheaper aluminum wheels can be less predictable
@@2_Pedals yeah I don't know if I trust those posts I read. it seems most Crux owners really like their bike. I think I'll get a Crux comp and upgrade to Terra CL or Reserve 40 wheels. I currently ride a Roubaix which I love but also want a fast gravel bike
@@norcalchrismeister Ya if you currently have a Roubaix I would definitely recommend the Crux, much stiffer and quicker version of that. However I would start with tires at least larger than 40s for a fun experience
@@2_Pedals Thx! Appreciate the advice
nice jump :)
Had to hit it a few times.
Looks like the Rez...
Couple more miles and it begins.
Where is this?😂 This is easily my favourite type of environment to ride in. ❤
Nothing beats it, silence and dirt!
Why is it that so called experienced cyclist omit one of the most important pieces of kit? Gloves! Think of all the everyday things you use your hands for, including wiping your arse.
Gloves always while mountain biking, outside of that I like to feel the grips on my bare hands for the most part. Unless it is cold.
I have sweaty palms and quit wearing gloves during warm months. Will wear gloves in the Fall and once the temps dip into the 20's, out comes the pogies which allows me not to wear gloves.
How is the comfort of the Specialized Crux? Specifically on longer rides?
On the road amazing. On longer gravel rides your hands start to notice that stiff frame and the vibrations going up through the handlebars. Overall very similar experience to a longer ride on a road bike. If the road is super rough obviously your are going to suffer quite a bit more.
Go 47m and run lower pressure. Possibly look into a redshift stem if you want to soften it up a little.
Ya gotta try wide tires next the 38s are pretty small for any type of Gravel riding. I look into the redshift as well. Thanks for the tip.
@@2_Pedals How about the geometry? Do you think it is too aggressive to daily or do you get used to it?
@@shininngg No not at all. I actually think this is one of the more comfortable road/gravel bikes I have ridden. I pitch the handlebars up a bit more than normal to get a nice comfortable seating position.
Oop 😮 ha i have those same 100% glasses!
I wish I would have bought the 100%s. These are actually Smiths and I way overpaid for them.
@@2_Pedals yeah those are cool
I have 47mm rhombus on front and 47mm tracer on rear (both spesh) on my crux at c 30-35 psi depending on route and really good at taking away harshness off road but still rolls really efficiently- recommend it!
Wow thats low, I run that on my MTB. I am a heavy dude so probably couldn't get away with that low but I will give those tires a look. Just out of curiosity what is your approximate body weight.
@@2_Pedals 72 kg. I have an Epic Evo mtb and run tyres at 20/23 psi
Tubeless btw
Seems like lots of psi, even for 38s… What do the tires measure to in width? My Pathfinders 42 blew up to just under 44 on 25mm internal width wheels
I find if I put any less than 50 PSI, I start getting rock dings on the rims. The tires measure just over 40 when fully inflated but I have noticed with mileage they get quite a bit more round and flat.
Well, the Crux has a very shallow bottom bracket drop compared to more hardcore gravel bikes - by several mm in fact. So yeah - it’s going to be a squirrelly ride in technical terrain.
I have tribal on my Orbea Terra. The breaks suck and the drivetrain gets noisy when it is dusty. Going for sure for grx next time for the breaks alone.
Ya the GRX seems to be a favorite of a lot of riders. The Orbeas are really pretty bikes though nice ride
How tall are you ?? What size of frame ??
Im 6,1 and fit perfectly on a 58
Hard tail or full suspension?
Full suspension. Stumpy
If you are located in Utah and have a gravel bike that you would like to see a review on hit me up. In need of some gravel bikes for the channel.
You can ride 47mm or with 27,5 even 2.1 tires. That will make it much more comfy
Thanks, I always feel weird putting huge tires on a very light fast gravel bike, but I will give this a shot see how it goes.
I just put 47m tires and road or gravel it added confidence and comfort. Love it.
I just rode it at a Specialized Store. It really feels like a road bike on the road. Don`t know how it feels on gravel.
Ya love this as a road bike, depends on the type of terrain you will be riding gravel on but overall really great bike.
Try the Shimano GRX - no problem with dirt, dust, whatever. Also, you may have to put new brake pads, I guess yours are glassy now. I had a chain guard included, a black one that I don't use because I made my own, transparent. Good review, thank you.
Thanks this is great advice, im gonna try sanding the pads before I get new ones. We will see how it goes.
It’s possible that it works. I’ve done this on my motorcycle‘s pads. Make sure to release the brake every now and then when doing long downhills. The heat can turn the pad‘s surface to glass. Make sure to properly break in the pads again after sanding them. They need to be seated with the disc again.
Will do, thank!
Thanks. Great video, excellent info value.
Thanks much appreciated
What tires and pressures do you run?
My current tires are the Specialized pathfinder 38s. I run between 50-60 PSI I am about 180 LBS. I will probably switch to at least a 40MM going forward for a softer ride.
@@2_PedalsProbably won't feel much of a difference unless you can fit like 48
@@2_Pedals I'm using the Schwalbe 2.1 Thunder Burt mtb tyres. Faster than any gravel tyre and very fun and comfortable. But a very narrow fit as I even had to trim down part of the knobs on the left backside. I used this set up for Badlands ultra race in Spain and it was amazing. I rode Badlands before with 40mm gravel tyres and at the time even had redshock suspension stem and seatpost but was less comfortable then this year when I did not use any suspension. So all the comfort came from the 2.1 tyres with low pressure
Riding at dawn on a clear day and the road all to yourself has to be the best feeling.
One of the true joys of being out in the middle of nowhere on a bike. Nothing better!
