Safety and awareness are so important, and if I feel like music is going to be an issue, I certainly make sure to leave my headphones at home: running, riding or even just walking. 💖

    What's a person supposed to do? Riding without music isn't my idea of fun. I have midrange hearing loss so I need the music louder than most to catch the lyrics... On top of all that I have coordination issues which make being startled by something coming up behind me more dangerous. My solution is a large Bluetooth Speaker mounted in front of me. Not only can I have the music loud enough for my liking but I can still hear cars coming up behind me. Leave the earbuds at home!

    I have a Bluetooth set that has a u-shape solid piece I wear on my neck and the ear pieces are small and dangling so it's easy to put them in or pull them out. Sometimes if I'm on a trail I'll use both or I remove them both if I'm navigating traffic but for the most part ride as you describe. I keep the volume low regardless so I can still hear if I have both in.

    Don't pass right-turning cars on their right. Seems like common sense, but I had a cyclist yell at me when I pulled into the bike lane to make a right turn (as per the law), and he pulled up on my right to yell obscenities at me. Absolutely a stupid and dangerous move on his part. If you are also turning right, pull in behind the vehicle and wait your turn to turn right. If you are going straight, pass the right-turning vehicle on their left.

    • @unmarkedstreet
      @unmarkedstreet 4 месяца назад

      As a cyclist in the bike line, I think of my lane like any other lane of traffic, and you wouldn't turn right in front of another car coming up behind you on the right. We do ask that you check for cyclists in your mirror before you turn in front of us, which is likely why someone yelled at you. :( Most of us are overly cautious, and do try to pay attention to cars with their right turn signals on to avoid this situation, but it's something to consider next time you go to turn right. A simple check in your mirror might prevent a situation?

    • @shorehelical
      @shorehelical 4 месяца назад

      What about a car that passes you to make a right directly in front of you?

    • @unmarkedstreet
      @unmarkedstreet 4 месяца назад

      @@shorehelical Yeah, this is never a fun situation. We definitely would prefer that the car just wait for us to pass the intersection, and then turn after we go through. It's truly only a few more seconds to wait and be safe.

  • @LimitedWard

    FWIW, data from states where "Idaho stop" laws have been enacted (i.e. treat stop signs as yield and red lights as stop signs) have shown a net decrease in crashes by as much as 20%. So ironically even though common sense would dictate that it would be safer if cyclists followed the same laws as drivers, it would actually better for everyone if cyclists were allowed to use their best judgement on when to go. Of course that doesn't absolve cyclists of any responsibility. They still need to use common sense and actually yield when its not their turn to enter the intersection.

    • @unmarkedstreet
      @unmarkedstreet 4 месяца назад

      Wow, that is an amazing stat! Thank you so much for sharing it. I agree that the use of common sense is the key here, but it's a great argument for other states to adopt the same laws for cyclists.

  • @jeanschyso
    @jeanschyso 4 месяца назад

    In Quebec they make us ride as far right as possible to allow cars to pass us. They usually do so unsafely. I will always do what is safe before what is legal, because I am not willing to die for a ticket. Our traffic light cycles and positioning also are dangerous, so I will cross a red light if that is safer than waiting for a flashing green light. I know plenty of intersections where I don't think I can survive crossing if I do it on the green. The best way to explain it is that if the FACING traffic has a flashing green and my bike path is on the left side of the road, if there is no one in the "right turn" lane over on the other side of the road, I know for a fact no one is going to go where I'm going. However, because the bike lane is on the left side of the road, cars that are going to cross on the same green light as me don't necessarily look to their left to see if someone's about to cross there and I've had multiple close calls, and even saw a stroller almost get hit. So I will keep crossing on red. So long as it is safer in that specific context. For stops, I just slow down as much as a car would, then go. I don't see why I should do a full stop when the car next to me went down to 8 km/h.

    • @unmarkedstreet
      @unmarkedstreet 4 месяца назад

      Feeling safe on a bicycle is definitely the priority! It just scares the crap out of me when I see people in my town speeding through stop lights as speeding cars are genuinely barreling toward them - EEK!! Unfortunately, if they ever got hit, they might be cited by the police for causing the accident, which is also a result nobody wants. But I agree with you that safety sometimes comes at the risk of "breaking the rules" with the way traffic is today! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

  • @langhamp8912
    @langhamp8912 4 месяца назад

    The fundamental problem, and my skepticism towards drivers and their traffic laws, stems from the fact that bicyclists have responsibilities but no rights. Until drivers are specifically trained to recognize bicyclists should (but don't) have the same rights as other vehicles, bicyclists will continue to be violently assaulted by drivers. Even the police, who you would expect to know the law, always takes the side of the driver.

    • @unmarkedstreet
      @unmarkedstreet 4 месяца назад

      Yes, to be very transparent with you, I also agree. My hope with some of these videos is to help share more of this information in a way that sparks healthy discussion, although we anticipate some animosity coming our way as well. We do need for drivers to have a better understanding about cyclists' rights and to also help them see that we are human beings! I want to be able to go ride my bicycle on the road and feel safe, and I don't feel that way every day right now. Thanks so much for your comment, and here's hoping we can find ways to create a better future to share the roads!!
