Great, understandable presentation. Jimi in the background was great, too. Well done!
The music is really annoying
Great video! I've dealt with the safety police my whole career in the oilfields and crane work. They can be a downer and need to come out of moms basement and get some fresh air from time to time. I think it's funny I've been talking to you for a while on Facebook and didn't put the two together till you mentioned Danger Shop on a Facebook post. Lol! Your tenon removal video really helped me early on and I'll probably always remember it. Thanks and keep up the good work Bud.
Thank you! Richard Raffan has been my mentor for some time. I tend to show tools and skills in a less confined way. LOL
@TurnerDave that's perfect, I love watching him too and especially his protégé Tomislav. I've basically taught myself everything from RUclips.
Great job, didn't realize this was your channel, Bud. Love the channel and name lol!
Great job explaining the process.
This is a great video. Thanks.
I recently made a gouge out of a hitch pin for attaching implements to a tractor. I figured it was made out of some pretty hard steel to hold up to that kind of abuse. So far I've been very happy with it.
I'm looking for a blade to make a scraper out of. Most of what I have are either too thick or too thin. I love making my own tools. I just ordered a bunch of used tooling stuff from a machining company so I should have enough to last me the rest of my life.
I went to a mower shop that does commerical mowers. Blades 1/4" to 3/8" thick will be perfect.
I've made scrapers from files and a leaf spring and I think the leaf spring is better. I've never made one from a lawnmower blade but I've got a bucket full of them so I'm going to try it. Thank you for the tip!
I like to bring the tailstock live center up to center the tap when I'm tapping a piece of wood. I've had the best luck using seasoned oak. It taps almost like metal. I just make sure I use CA on any cracks before I true it up and start tapping. Thank you for sharing!
I might have to try a vacuum system on my lathe. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'm 71 years old and have been turning for less than a year and almost lost a finger on one of my early projects out of ignorance and I suppose, stupidity. Fortunately it was the little finger on my left hand and I didn't lose it. I was very surprised because I'm have a lot of experience with mechanics, fabrication and carpentry and am always careful. You have a great setup and shop 👍. I like the lathe, one of my first projects was to build a lathe and I had just got it finished when I found an antique Crescent lathe and upgraded it with a treadmill motor and I've been having a blast with it. I made my own pulleys also 😊.
Just found your channel, great video 👍
I came across this method by trial and error. It's what worked best out of everything I tried. I tried all kinds of gouges and tools, a lot of them ones I made myself, and figured out which gouge and grind worked best and it turned out to be one of my homemade ones.
Thank you,thanks for sharing.
Great job mate. I congratulate you❤🎉
Very good video brother. He was one excited young man.
Boa Noite amigo, chegando para prestigiar seu trabalho. Muito bem feito sucesso. Conectado""
Thanks for the post
Thanks. This is really useful. Being a Brit, I'm quite familiar with the expletive: "Bugger!" (plus a few others, of course). It's more unusual to hear it in an American accent... and quite endearing. I've been thinking of purchasing a vacuum chuck for some time but I'd be a fool not to try this first. If I succeed, it'll save me a few quid or, if not, Ebay it is. Thank you.
There is a (not terribly inexpensive) device/system called HoldFast that connects to an air compressor. In theory, it's a nice bit of kit, but I haven't had good luck with the chuck that comes with it. If/when the seal breaks around the rubber rings they use, it's quite a trick to reseat and reseal. So - when it works, it pretty good. Otherwise it's useless and quite a pain to repair correctly (in my hands, at least). Cheers from Texas!
I wound up with the Oneway Coring System, which has a hefty price tag, but it works well. Saves more wood and also does the rough cut for the next bowl exterior. It looks like you are doing great with this and it is certainly simpler and versatile. Thanks for the post.
Like your lawnmower blade tool. Your narrative was excellent. Thanks!
I cant imagine anyone thinking you couldn't use a regular spindle Gouge to turn a Bowl?
Many "experts" claim it is unsafe. Of course they think all the masters are wrong.🤣
I really like the use of the gouges. Excellent work
Thank you Sir!
@Jmoney152 Well sir. I will see what I can do to help you out.
I use them all the time.
I laughed out loud, when you drew the corner of the Flag Back to reveal the bench absolutely heaving with stuff… I called my wife in to prove that I’m not the only one with a tiny. Crowded Untidy but very busy workshop… I’m a long retired pro a toy Maker…. My Workshop size ? A whopping 12 ft by 8 ft… WOW! I used to make up to a hundred small toy kits a day, when I wasn’t teaching, demonstrating or selling… I still have all my fingers , after a lifetime if woodwork… I have subscribed, so hang in there, I want to see what you do. Thanks !
Thank you! Cleaning is over rated. LOL
To get the rubber coating on it you might consider using a stuff called Dip It. It’s basically liquid rubber and is sold for coating the handles of hand tools.
It does not stay soft enough. The surface has to conform to the grain in the item. Which is not always smooth as glass.
❤
Thank you Sir.
You're welcome.
You and Mr. Raffan make more sense than all the others combined. Thank you.
Great advice. Thanks David
Thanks David. Great video.
I just subscribed and will share. Good luck.
Hi David. I just discovered your channel. Great tour of your shop. Just the way it should be. Looking forward to watching. Thank you. Jon.
Thank you for checking it out.
WHY would you spin it so fast?!
Because it works best at speed. Ever use one?
Good video. Do you find this to be better than a worm screw?
Asked before you got there.... LOL
It offers far more support than a set of 2" jaws. And it can be turned to have as small a face as needed to allow tiny turns.
Nice idea 👍
Nice workshop you got. New sub here 😊
I've seen bowl hollower before but in my opinion this is the most dangerous one, no offense, especially if you get a catch there goes your whole arm. Stay safe
Richard Raffan and I both use this style. I have had it jam, but it just stalls the lathe. The arm support I use keeps the arm safe.
It's not gonna remove your arm. The tool has a support like this to give you leverage........ All that length on your side of the rest, and with it bein under your arm means a catch would have to lift you off the ground....... and that's not gonna happen with a lathe motor, it'll stall or the belt will slip on the pulley. It's not gonna take your arm.
Parabéns amigo pelo trabalho
Absolutely awesome video
Thank you Ivo!
I subscribed because I love woodturning and will help you out. You kind of make me nervous you are so intense.
Help me out??
In my 80s, I’m too old to set wood aside to dry for years. Rough turning symmetrical bowls and pots usually leave me with the same problems you describe. My best and favorite turning is a cedar root. It was also the hardest. I wish there was a way to post a picture but you’ve been turning long enough to imagine - cracks, holes, bark - they’re all part of why it’s beautiful. After watching your video and understanding that I’m not the sole problem but rather trying to do the wrong thing, I’m going to just stop sweating symmetry and pull out another cedar root. Wish me luck.
As experienced turners we can deal with it. New turners would probably burn the rough turning. I'd rather they didn't.
It happens to the best of us!!!!! LOL!!!!!
Yes. But I saved all 4 of the rough turns.
Wisdom and knowledge
Thank you Sir!
Another good video with good explanation!!!!!
Thank you Curt!
I am gonna have to spend some more time with my scrapers. I have a few. I just havent really given them a chance
They are a very useful tool. They can do many things well.
Robohippy uses them a lot and in fact has a video turning a whole bowl with scrapers. Also you might want to look at the big ugly tool, it's basically a scraper and there's a guy who uses it for just about everything.
cool project!
Thank you! I use one of mine just about every day. Fast and efficient.
I like this video. great explanation one how you use the scrapers.
Thank you Jesse!
All of post didn't post. t There is a man named Robo Hippy that turns bowls completely with scrapers from roughing out to hollowing to the finished product. He has videos on You Tube
I'm alive for the most part. I've seen him work. I've done bowls that way. It can be a very fast easy turn if they are kept sharp.
