It was used widely in organ settings, most notably Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), who also composed two church cantatas beginning with the hymn. "All My Music!...

Lovely. One note: as the music you showed said, this piece was written by Johann Michael Bach, Johann Sebastian's father-in-law and 1st cousin, once removed. @@jkjives1786 Thank you! A choir member once told me roughly the same thing after I played it. She said the driving 8th notes were very insistent! I think Bach got his point across of an insistent (and perhaps anguished), "Come, come!"

@thomas-xj1hs Thank you! Bairstow was quite creative, I think. If you do a search of "Werning" "Bairstow" and "All My Music" you'll find more.
Congratulations on this amazing performance Dan: I am so used to listening to this on french organs, and even making a recording myself on a Hauptwerk/C-Coll. The Willis colours bring this to life in a completely new way - I am definitely jumping on board to explore and follow your project.
@jerrymartin79 Thank you for your comment. I agree that the Willis is absolutely brilliant in simply making great-sounding music on its own terms. In other words, I believe a French organ music purist would still say, "Well, it's not exactly an accurate French sound, but it is beautiful music in its own right." And that is exactly why I'm recording everything on this one great organ.
Many thanks to you for your gift to all organists; it's truly a delight.

@@jkjives1786 Thank you. The Hereford Father Willis organ is so beautiful, I've never used any other sequenced sets. Never get tired of it.
@AllMyMusicbyDanWerning Have you found that it's adequate for French music? It sounds great to me. The Caen is on my shopping list, but I'm waiting (perhaps in vain) for the exchange rate to improve.
@jkjives1786 The advantage of Hauptwerk, of course, is that you can adjust individual rank volumes. Before launching into a bunch of French music, I used Ctrl-H and made sure Choir and Swell 8' and 4' Diapasons/Principals were nearly equal in volume to the Great No. 2 Diapason. Then I raised the volume of the Choir and Swell reeds so they were a bit more prominent. I also found the Solo Viola very useful because if strengthened a bit, it became additional "reediness" in the mix of any other manual that needed it. The Solo Orchestral Oboe also is brighter than the Swell Oboe so I used it instead sometimes. To create the best voix humaine on an organ that doesn't have one, two versions are Solo English Horn + Clarinet with tremulant and 4' coupler OR Swell Oboe + Solo English Horn + tremulant and maybe 4' cplr. Finally, I raised the volume of the 1-3/5 on the Choir, used the reeds liberally, stacked 8' (flutes + diapasons) a lot, and avoided 2' stops and mixtures until fff or sfz levels. If you listen to all my recent Franck recordings, I believe the result is musical and "French enough"!
@@AllMyMusicbyDanWerning It definitely sounds French enough for me! It sounds great! Thanks for all the good information. There's so much about Hauptwerk that I still need to explore!
I had the great privilege of hearing Paul Manz on an almost-weekly basis at chapel services at Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago and on other special occasions. He was such a pleasant, humble man, and so incredibly gifted.
@wswansonbln Indeed. I went to his workshops and concerts on a few occasions, and once to a service at St. Luke's in Chicago. But my best story was after he was retired and not playing organ anymore, around 2005 I believe. He owned a vacation home in Colorado close to Canon City, where I was organist at the local Episcopal church. He apparently was brought to a Sunday morning service there by his daughter because he preferred a liturgical service with hymns, etc. After I played my postlude, suddenly there was Paul Manz standing next to the console to greet me! After that shock, a handshake, and introductions, he said, "I THOUGHT you sounded like a Lutheran musician!"
@@AllMyMusicbyDanWerning Lucky for you that you found out that he was there AFTER the service! I understand the comment about someone sounding like a Lutheran musician, and that would have been a compliment coming from him. Congratulations!
The song is beautiful. It has sad tone but I still like it.

This likely a downwritten improvisaton 1890.
@HowardJohnstone This is long, but it's the information I have: Franck composed his Trois Chorals over the course of two months in the summer of 1890; he died in November of the same year, and the works were published posthumously in 1891. Franck never had the opportunity to teach these three masterpieces, though he played through them on the piano in his home. However, it is clear that these works were intended to be played on a French symphonic organ - Franck reportedly wished to register them on the Cavaillé-Coll organ at Sainte-Clotilde in Paris (where he was organist), but never did. The dedication gives further evidence of the work being steeped in the French Romantic School, though it is somewhat controversial - the Durand edition says that the first chorale is dedicated to Eugène Gigout, but Vincent d'Indy argues that Franck intended that it be attributed to Alexandre Guilmant (Smith 209-210). Regardless of the dedicatee, the symphonic style of the work resembles Guilmant’s organ sonatas, which were written for Cavaillé-Coll organs. The "Choral I in E Major" was completed on August 7, 1890, during which time Franck and his family vacationed at Nemours. In a letter to a friend written later that month, he was likely referring to the E-Major Chorale: "I have written a long organ piece that I have entitled simply Choral. A chorale it is, indeed, but with plenty of fantasy," (Smith 212).
Perfection in my opinion Dan

@garthlow4852 Thank you! This isn't a piece I ever used in church before because it didn't fit liturgically. But an old organist friend offered it to me for the same reason, and I thought, "Why not? I'll play it for fun."

Thank you very much for listening and commenting. We organists accept our lot of often being told "too loud, too soft, too fast, too slow!" But ultimately, we do what sounds right to us. In this case, the piece was likely written for a virginal, a 1-stringed instrument, and even the organs of Bull's day weren't large affairs, so I went for color rather than volume. But I'm happy you enjoyed the piece overall! 🙏🤗
