From In Defense of Marxism
James Burnham (November 22, 1905 - July 28, 1987) was an American philosopher and political theorist. He chaired the New York University Department of Philosophy; his first book was An Introduction to Philosophical Analysis (1931). Burnham became a prominent Trotskyist activist in the 1930s. A year before he wrote the book, he rejected Marxism and became an influential theorist of the political right as a leader of the American conservati...

    I don’t think we’ve ever seen a workers state in any definition. We have seen central committees/politburos of educated people relative to the workers they command but I just don’t see how any form of Leninist organization creates governance *for* workers. It’s obviously way more palatable for the rank and file to believe the central committees have their best interest at heart, but cannot meaningfully adapt forms of extraction that came before it.

    This article doesn’t seem to, at any point, provide substantial evidence or arguments to support why the comparison between the actions of the Nazis against the Jewish people and the actions of the current Israeli government against Palestinians is invalid. All it seems to do is cherry-pick some examples of anti-Zionists being antisemitic and use that to guilt all those drawing the aforementioned comparison by association. Saying that the holocaust puts some sort of special moral burden on the Jews is one thing, that’s obviously wrong, but can we really not compare a state systematically persecuting and killing innocent civilians on a massive scale to previous examples of that happening?

    What claims of Grigat do you consider particularly controversal?

    • @freeassociation4779
      @freeassociation4779 13 дней назад

      I don't want to misrepresent Grigats ideas and I don't remember precisely what I said in this video. But at least among what I know of Grigat that is in English he puts the pro-isreal thesis much stronger than other critics of anti-zionism who draw on critical theory that I PERSONALLY have read and would be controversial to many. He says things like "unconditional support for the Jewish State" which I think is different than unconditional supporting Israel's legitimate right to exist and defend itself. At the very least "unconditional support for the Jewish state" can be interpreted as support for any action or policy that Israel empirically implements as if Zionism were a monolith that is completely unified and that there is no substantial difference between for instance Ben-Gurion and Netanyahu which is precisely what left Antisemites think. This is extremely controversial. Anti-Deutsch thought is diverse and I think at its best it offers extremely rich ideas which should be taken seriously as a counterweight to reactionary anti-imperialism but at its worse it simply inverts dog shit anti-imperialism while maintaining the same campist logic. For instance I find the anti-deutsch's Critique of anti-americanism extremely important but when this turns into pro-americanism it loses its grip on reality and becomes a sloppy cartoon. I think probably the person to best assimilate the best of anti-deutsch thought in a way that is coherent and actually appealing to the as yet unconvinced radical left is Moishe Postone. Like I said I could be misrepresenting Grigat and if I did I welcome any nuances you'd like to offer.

    • @AlicesKraut
      @AlicesKraut 13 дней назад

      @@freeassociation4779 Thanks for the response & I agree completely. Particular concerning the point of unconditional support for Israel: If you support Israel because it protects Jews from Antisemitism, than this support is indeed conditional on Israel living up to this purpose. So the left pro-Israel argument, which I consider to be correct, does indeed not justify "unconditional support "

    The text just seems profoundly dishonest. There are certainly problems with postcolonial and decolonial theory, but to pretend that Israel is being demonized is just silly. The Israel Palestine conflict is one of the best use cases for the concept of "settler colonialism," so much so that the left will have trouble pivoting after the conflict ends. The anger at Israel is driven by its own actions. The anger on college campuses is driven by the fact that the United States spends billions on weapons that fuel the conflict, while engaging in austerity at home. There is a broad International consensus that Israel is committing a genocide, as evidenced by the rhetoric of politicians and the Tik Tok videos of IDF reservists. One place where the left falls down is in the dimension of political economy. There are real questions about the effectiveness of BDS, given that Israel is integrated into the security apparatus of the United states, Russia and China as a purchaser an seller of military technology and software. Moreover, Israel is tied into American anti-communist Dirty Wars; for example, the contras were trained in Israel. The "x is anti-semitism" argument tends to reproduce the same sloppy thinking as post-colonial studies. It's a form of "trope talk" which, eschewing material analysis, favors form over content. Internally, zionism may be viewed as Jewish liberation, but it is inescapably the project to create an ethnostate in an area of the world that already had a non-jewish population. That is a project that required and requiers violence. It's a different kind of violence than is used to build a nation state, which involves the forcible molding of subjectivities to create a homogeneous "national character," and it's a different kind of violence than was required to create capitalism, which involves proletarianization of large portions of the population. Moreover, it's not a project which would have been possible without the support of various empires - first the British, briefly the Soviets and finally the United States. Postcolonial Theory claims to take the side of those who are on the receiving end of Imperial violence. Despite it's problematic Tendencies toward relativism it gets this conflict right, and brings useful tools of analysis. It says that "zionism" should not be understood on its own terms - as Jewish liberation, but instead it should be viewed in the context of larger Imperial projects and ongoing processes of displacement. The sale of surveillance and policing Technologies which were tested on the Palestinians and the creation of special investment opportunities for land in the West Bank are essential features of what Zionism is rather than incidental facts.

    Kropotkin is an interesting read, but I think he suffers from probably the main fault of anarchists generally. Which is how to impart order, proportion and design to a society without a body of laws enforced by the power of a state or a placeholder of the state. From libertarians to communists, this seems to be the most practically important, but most fumbled, aspect of their ideology. Kropotkin, from the works I read of him, proposes that all or almost all of the actions we punish as illegal or disreputable are the result of capitalist systems of oppressions or analogous structures that would simply be transformed under his new poltiical system. It seems remarkably naive and foolish, holding onto this idea of the 'blank slate', to say that we would simply stop lying, cheating or stealing without a government. But if this were not the case, then anarchists seem to have a problem. Not that it's unresolvable, but I haven't heard a convincing argument.

    • @neilreynolds3858
      @neilreynolds3858 Месяц назад

      Well, no, the blank slate is a fallacy that leads the Left down the road to self-destruction. Unless you admit that there is such a thing as human nature and work with it instead of against it, no theoretical system will ever work. The question is whether any government has ever done more good than harm. As long as they stuck to things like water projects that couldn't be done with local resources, they were functioning for the benefit of their people but that is never enough power for the kinds of people who are attracted to power - they have to try to tame humans the way they tamed nature. Power is an addiction but that's part of human nature.

    I think Pickwickian refers to The Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens and the manner in which literature like this was sold in installments, frequently distributed by street vendors. Sutton Place is an area of Manhattan where the rich lived, and I think still do, though starched collars have fallen out of fashion among the swells.
