I wouldn't reimburse the remodeling cost for two reasons one they didn't ash the owner of the house's permission and second they never made any rental payments to the owner. So I would consider the remodeling cost back rent payments.

If a wife and MIL are oil and water and the MIL completely healthy, the son can move in with his mother. Problem fixed. Depending on if their house is paid for, the wife can find a smaller apartment and rent the house out. Many of these men have NO intention of actually doing hands on care meaning they expect their mother to keep house for THEM! And why they want the wife to move with them. Do paperwork agreeing to property management and agreement to no sneaky attempts to sell by themselves, etc. I bet dollars to donuts the husband will back off because he has an agenda!
