It is interesting to note that Purcell, and this we know with absolute certainty, also sang. However, the exact nature of his voice remains uncertain. According to some accounts, during the coronation of James II, he sang bass - his name appears on their list, alongside that of John Gostling. Yet, some researchers believe that Purcell possessed a low counter-tenor voice. Evidence of this can be found in the "Gentleman’s Journal" of November 1692:
