Runaway Motorhome Crash! #rvlife #rv #rvlifestyle #garyavids
Very nice park.
I went there in February. Going back in September, probably.
Oh my god I’ve never seen anyone drive near where I live but I never knew there were rv parking there do people live there or is it just rv parking and then you live it and you go to your house
Can’t i drive into Mexico ?
Sure, lots of people do. My purpose for going into Los Algodones was for dental work, and the dentist's office was a half block from the border crossing... so no need to drive.
@@garya2320 Okay, thanks for the reply. Do i need any special documents to cross the border & coke back ? I have a green card and a state identification card
@@Eye-it-azz Passport to re enter US.
They forgot to pop the brake, happens alot.
One time i locked up my brakes on the highway thinking i was grabbing the cigarette lighter from the dash. So maybe the guy thought he set the brakes but actually played with the cigarette lighter
With your logic it could have hit me too. Im in phoenix az
Doesn't that rig have air breaks
I would always put a vehicle in park before leaving the drivers seat. Don't RV's have A PARK function on the transmission.
Close one!
Always make sure the air parking brake is on. I have hade 3 diesel pusher over the last 25 years and never leave in neutral and get out with out putting the park break on. More than likely they hade put the park break on but was in drive. They pulled the park brake and thought everything was good. But they left it in drive and it stayed put for a little bit. They were distracted by being so quick to say good bye they screwed up. Now there is a bunch of wrecked, junk RV's that became the out come.
For those who don't know. When air pressure "fails" in air brakes, they default to maximum grip. That's how you test them daily. You over-pump the brakes to lower the pressure below what the compressor can provide until they snap shut. If it doesn't do that the vehicle stays put until repaired. Pulling the yellow knob does the same thing. It instantly snaps the brakes on maximum. Since they CAN fail, you ALWAYS chock the wheels- always.
lol, avoid it by not leaving your rv running when not in it, put it in park and apply the parking brakes, my guess here is he got in a rush hopped out doing none a those things and he's lucky he don't have an involuntary manslaughter charge against him...
Now that the RV industry is full of crackheads and meth heads the brakes just are not good on any thing built after 20008, also the frames are sub standard quality, many people are saying Donald trump owns the RV industry that's why it's so harabal
Given that a lot of motor home owners are morons, the vehicle was probably not in park.
I make it a habit never to get out of my vehicle running and in park with the brake on and my keys in my hand because I've had this happen to me and my parking brake wasn't set lucky there was just minor damage to the trailer it hit and another time I got out with out my keys with my truck running and my little dog locked me out.
I make it a practice of NOT being social whether it be coming into an RV site, doing setup or prepping to leave and actually leaving a site. There is just too much concentration needed no matter the age (I am mid-50s). I even ask my spouse not to make small talk with me until we are underway on the highway. Driving an RV is like flying a plane -lots of details. You don't see pilots stopping on the runway mid-taxi and walking out and talking to people like this RV'er did. Learning lesson here: focus, focus, focus on the RV process. Alot of mistakes/accidents happen because of social distractions.
💯
You are wise.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY the brakes released "somehow" It is IMPOSSIBBLE on an air brake equipped system.
Nice video of TorC. Make sure you check out Caballo Lake about 16 miles south of RJs on Hwy 187. There is another golf course at EB too. 🌶
Thanks for the tip. I'll check that out the next time I go through the area.
They probably didn't engage the brake....it happens.
Spartan Motors who makes class diesel chassis sells a lock devise that goes around the park brake so as to lock the air brakes until unlatched. Can also be used as a anti theft devise.
We were there a few days later I guess in mid April and saw the motorhome with the crashed front end while walking the park. Never new what exactly happened but now is explained
Your car wasn't even that close to the road. Stop trying to be so damn dramatic. You weren't in any danger and neither was your property. Get a life! There's also no way that parking brake released on its own. They forgot to set it and were too embarrassed to say so.
he didn't set parking brake. Simple as that. What really is mindboggling to me is you had no clue what all was going on right outside your motor coach till you opened the curtain.
I'm a retired trucker and RV traveller now. There's no doubt in my mind that the driver there failed to lock the air parking brakes on that coach. I've seen this happen many times over the years and in every case in was due to failing to lock the air brakes (pulling the yellow button out).
It's typical of RV owners driving equipment beyond their skill level. I'm a retired trucker as well. Had a 40ft American Tradition motorhome for a few years. Saw plenty of people in rv parks who shouldn't have been driving. They knew nothing about handling a coach and even less about air brake systems. I stay home now ! It's safer !
Dumb ass didn't set the park brake,
They were definitely smoking weed before the accident
The most logical explanation is the owner did not (forgot) to put on the parking brake….I’m sure he will deny it till the cows come home..
It is my recollection that American had a recall on some of their DP motorhomes for faulty parking brakes. Yes, it will move in neutral. A friend of mine had it happen on his Dream 98-99 at a rest area while he went to the bathroom.
While a mechanical failure could have occurred, or possibly pets released the system, it’s more likely that user error is what happened. The pets are a convenient excuse because mechanical malfunction can be investigated. If insurance covers the “innocent parties”, and the injured person was the runaway owner, it’s unlikely an in-depth investigation will ever occur. Thanks for sharing. Videos like this can help others prevent similar or worse outcomes even if the details vary.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂 What a moron!!!!!!
Something tells me if it had airbrakes that the pressure was not built up or he had a severe leak. Hopefully it will get figured out.
Air pressure is required to release the brake, not engage it. So if all the pressure leaks out, the brakes are engaged by spring pressure.
@helidude3502 thanks for the explanation, when he stated it rolled down the hill he either had it in drive and it over came the brakes , or he had it in neutral with no brake set.
Simple, they didn't set their parking brake.
I would lie too and put the blame anywhere but me! Then I'll run for senate office as a republican and vote demarcate.
is it possible he forgot to put the brake on?
I think there’s some untruth going on, just my opinion.
That is a diesel coach with air brakes. The only way the parking brake “failed” is if it was never applied in the first place. Once applied, they are *not* easily released.
same thing I was thinking
I doubt they put the brake on at all, the driver thought he put on the brake but did not and he failed to put it into park.
that sounds more likely I think he didn't want to get in trouble and lied
My humble opinion, and driving a motor coach for 43 years, it is very possible that he forgot to put the RV in neutral, that is, he left it in direct, put the brakes on and connected the idle. not resisting the brakes, they crystallized and slid at full speed.
Maybe it wanted to runaway from motor home. 😂
I had an identical unit and I am very surprised that it ran away. It takes quite a bit of force to release the parking brake assuming the brakes were properly adjusted.
That coach didn’t “run away.” It’s a diesel coach with air brakes. The only way the parking brake “failed” is if it was never applied in the first place.
I have been a truck driver for 47 years, in the old days the parking brake could release if you had an air leak because it took air pressure to hold the parking brake but several years ago they developed a spring break that uses a very large spring in the brake canister that will hold the brakes locked and takes air pressure to release the parking brake if the brakes are not adjusted properly then they will not hold, if the motor home was left in gear and the brakes were not adjusted properly then that could be the problem, a small dog or two of them could not push the parking brake button in, I figure the brakes were out of adjustment or the parking brake was not ever set! Glad everyone is ok!
I’m guessing he forgot to put in park or put brake on, men have a block about being wrong….. I struggle with it .. but got over it. Thankfully no one’s hurt except ego.
One should always chalk their wheels every time you park the rig. Notice the fire department never leaves a rig without wheel chalks in place. The weight for a loaded rig is a runaway waiting to happen. There is no reason for this to happen; BTW, Harbor Freight Tools sells these . one of the few things they sell worth buying.
And that's one of many reasons my dogs travel in crates.
I’ve seen in some videos where the air brake switch is to the left of the driver and is pull up to brake, push down to release. It has a mushroom button on it. I can see where and excited dog could jump on it and release the brakes. Also, I do not believe these have a park setting in the transmission like cars and trucks. The dog needs its drivers license revoked!
I was impressed by the flatbed tow truck; cool how the wheels slide along the chassis either to give it angle or to level it out. Whoever thought up that idea deserves a kudos.
They've only been around about 40 years or so, but great to learn something new every day!
The safest thing that could be done in this case ..is for the owners if that crashed motorhome would be if they handed their license in and caught a train..🚑🏥⚰️😂🤣😂
Just for a guess, I'm speculating that they left it in drive, with the parking brake on, while they got out to do goodbyes, and the running engine overpowered the parking brake and it ambled off into the sunrise. If it had properly been in PARK it wouldn't have moved anywhere, engine on or not, parking brake on or not. Mistakes happen as we become old geezers, I've damn near destroyed our RV by not chocking the wheels when I disconnected the hitch once. Came within a 1/4 inch of sliding off the jack block before it stopped. The slam on the chassis with the tongue jack dropping 10 inches would have ruined the chassis, bending it severely where the angled arms meet the rest of the frame.
There is no such thing as "park" in an Allison 6 speed transmission, which is likely what they had. There is neutral and gears 1 through 6. The procedure when stopping is to put it into neutral and engage the parking brake, as they say they did. So either they forgot to engage the brake (most likely) or somehow the parking brake disengaged (less likely).
@@BottomleyAdventures Interesting to know, as such toys cost more than my house.
The only way that could have happened is if the brakes were so far out of adjustment that the slacks were not engaging the shoes. Highly unlikely that would be the case or this crash would have occurred sooner and on the highways.
I would agree with your logic and analogy on the subject having been in that position myself
@@BottomleyAdventures There is a way to lock the air parking brakes? Is that the same as the parking brake. I don't know anything about these large motorhomes.
Hi morning just watching your video on runaway motor home. I have driven commercial for 40 years.2 things could have happened and has happened to me. Loss of air pressure leaking system will make it happen. Even though there should be emergency breaking but most times not till u reach around 20 psi.second is did not fully engaged pulled it out not fully and they will pop out from pressure. Or maybe he just forget to set it at all and was lucky for a bit.just my thoughts
great vid thanks
maybe it was in reverse or in gear when brake was applied and never noticed, usually these rigs are auto's, it would stay in place for awhile, when engine auto rev's, like air on, maybe brakes never held, like out of adjustment....parking brake i mean, it slowly started to move, then away it went due to under adjusted parking brake
