John Barleycorn Must Die
Просмотров 13512 часов назад
Traditional - variation of Steve Winwood's version. "John Barleycorn" is the personification of barley and the alcoholic drink made from it. This version recounts the indignities, attacks and death that correspond to the various stages of barley cultivation. The concept of John Barleycorn goes back perhaps to the 16th Century, with Scottish and English ballads and prose thru the centuries telli...

Chris Smither One of Chris Smither's earliest memories growing up in New Orleans in the early 50's was the Fruit and Vegetable man coming down his street, singing out what he's got to sell from his truck. He weaves this memory into an allegory on what can't be bought for any price.
In The Pines

Other versions with different titles include "Where did you sleep last night" (which Nirvana covered in their MTV Unplugged) Black Girl, Hey Girl, and others. Bob Dylan Title track from Dylan's album released in the Fall of 1970, just a few months after Self Portrait. In 1969 Dylan began working with the Poet and Playwright Archibald MacLeish, writing songs for Macleish's staged adaptation of The Devil and Daniel Webster. MacLeish suggested song titles, including New Morning and Father of Night and several others. New Morning was intended as the open...

Amazing cover. Upload it to Spotify.
Tom's music is so so so beautiful and human. I miss him. Thanks for this.
Very nice. I had forgot the back story to this song. I often place this acoustically too. :)
Really like this! Great song especially the way you play it. Your playing and voice capture the essence of the song..Time to get going! Thanks
Thanks!
Lovely. Thank you as well for the information about Paul Siebel. I was introduced to the song by Bonnie Raitt and didn't know the background. I agree with your comparison to Tecumseh Valley. I perform both these songs and appreciate your version.
Love that!
Absolutely love this song. 🎉 ..and you're my favorite of you know, the 4 of y'all!
I so f****** luv this song .
This is really good! Keep releasing new stuff please!
This is really sweet! I play guitar and try to sing from time to time. I find it extremely impressive how solid ur fingerstyle rhythm is coupled with the soft melody. Also the lyrics roll off one another like honey, a different time it mustve been friend, haha. Really awesome song, keep up the great work sir!
This is one of my favourite songs, and you absolutely nailed everything I love about it. I wish I had more music vocabulary to point out my favourite things. Vocally I love that you made the melody yours, the piano(?) backing the guitar has a tone that's almost luminous and sounds gorgeous in the arrangement, your playing is seamless. I wasn't expecting the pedal/ filter on the vocals at first but immediately fell in love. And finally, this song is mixed perfectly for my tastes in regards to how loud each part is compared to the others (I know so much more goes into mixing, but I truly do not understand enough to comment). Your cover is immediately getting added to my comfort playlists, right after I listen to it a few more times. Thank you for making my morning : )
Thanks for this. I "discovered" GAI only recently, he has a distinct vibe and atmosphere that I respond to . Thanks for making MY morning!
Damn, your amazing! I actually know Greg. He and my dad are like brothers to each other, they sing and drink all the time. Great job!
Nice! He's a talented guy, gonna try to see him next time he's in the area.

One of my top 10 Prine songs ( hard to decide) Great job! Good feeling!
Well done performance of a Townes song. One of my favorites. I don’t sing Townes because his voice is too good, but you do it justice. 👋👋👋
That was really nice.
Cuckoo, I really appreciated your sharing.. A pleasant performance.. Bravo.. See you soon.. 1 like and my subscription.. Good evening Danielle👍👋
Excellent performance!!
That was really good. You have a nice voice.
great tune Pal. so neat. thanks for share
What a beautiful version of this. I’ve always loved The Pogues and love to see someone appreciate the beauty of their poetry and music. Sally Maclennan is one of my favorites, esp the line “and some of people left for heaven without warning.” Coming from rough Irish stock their songs speak the a gritty truth that resonates with me.
Boy are you picking my favorites. I used to sneak into the Earl when I was 15 or 16 to hear Goodman, Prine, and so many greats.
Difficult piece. But he never wrote an easy one. Goodman could sing them like Spoon River and this one but few others have tried. Well done.
Yes, it’s deceptively hard to find the rhythm that works with it, it feels very free and natural when he did it. I came across it again probably 40 years since I last heard it.
@@dwdavedw Do you know the song writer? It's Michael something. And if you think this one is tough try Spoon River. I think it's on affordable art too.
@@sabsab9126 It’s michael peter smith, I think I’ve heard Spoon River, I’ll have to revisit it.
sounds good buddy....Steve Goodman was a very talented performer and i barely remebered this song till i heard the chorus
Very nice song, I didn't know this one, we play Galway Girl by Steve Earle with my band
Good job ....i always liked steve earles music and this song was on an album of his called "train a coming" which was my favorite he has done up to current ...you sound great !
