Val Di Sole Downhill World Cup | A Privateers' POV Ep 9
Val Di Sole race week. Check out the gnarliest downhill world cup track in arguably the toughest conditions while going blind! This week we rode the black snake and managed to scathe through injury free however learned some new information that has rocked the boat a little.
Through regular videos I'm hoping to shed some light on preparing for and qualifying to race Downhill / EDR World Cups. The sport is undergoing a lot of changes so I'm not sure what to expect, but I'll be bringing you on the journey as it unfolds.

Gee... I'm here as Rohan Claffey, whose son does downhill and is type 1, told me about you. Im type 1 and have been for 25 years and competed in two Olympic Games in Bobsleigh (a strangely similar sport). Dont let it beat you. It can drive your performance to be even better 👍
Thanks Duncan, appreciate the words and inspiration to keen on changing! Cheers
Can I ask why you run the assegai over the dhf when it’s muddy? I find the assegai is areal mud hugger in the bog, where the dhf clears it a lot better. Do you find them just the same or are you very comfortable on the assegai?
I do enjoy both but primary run the assegia because that’s what I’m used to. In this case some boys even ran shortys and all tires were packing up with mud so I stayed on assegia. I like the dhf when it’s more harder pack and bone dry
Amazing to watch this as a non-mtb rider and think about you having blurry vision hey…. Your one tough mofo Hayden !!
Thanks Steve 💪
Loving these mate. Good to know what’s going on with ya, hope dealing with it isn’t too much trouble and you’ll be able to be better than before the diagnosis now that you know. Keep on it
Cheers boys hopefully a blessing in disguise and we can charge on !
Time to go to shimano!
Might be! Or TRP
Top Vlogger!
Hang in there mate, if anyone can overcome this it's you.
Thanks Tanya!
Hectic week bud! Lines looked solid, crappy to hear about the ole pancreas but keep smashing 🤟 Good on you for calling out the SRAM guys for being tools instead of using them too 👍
Haha yeah no shame calling out sram. And yea plenty of line choice there and tricky to pick the right one for the conditions!
Sorry to hear that partner. Hang in there
Just another bump in the road 👊
Damn…bummer. Hope you can get some help.
Yes for sure 🤞
STOP DRINKING!!!! Mate I had the same exact thing happen to me. My pancreas just stopped working like it should. Now I’m on metformen and insulin for the rest of my life.
Drew the short straw! Don’t even really drink but I will miss the cokes and fruit juice ahah
Total MTB hero!!
Really well done mate, only just off the pace there and with such a tough and long track it eats up time on all the tiny things. And thats not even mentioning the eyesight and health struggles! Sorry to hear about the diagnosis, would be a wild ride going through that while on the road and trying to concerntrate on the season. Hope it all goes as smoothly as possible and you're able to figure out some good solutions to get back on track. Respect the openness you're bringing to this mate
Thanks mate I appreciate the comment. All open here mate just trying to give as much insight as possible. We’ll figure it out, few diet changes and some regular injections and I’ll be back at it for the next one 🤝
Fella, you’re on the pace. Loved those lines you picked. The Type 1 DM is a tough bit of news, but you’re obviously in tune with your body to pick it up like that. Know a bit about this for a reason: get it proper sorted right away (no cheating) and you’ll be right as rain and back racing quickly. Just remember there’s a process with this, just like everything else and you’ll find you’re racing even better (probably been holding you back a bit for a while). Onward and upward and I’m feeling privileged that you shared this news. 💪💪💪
Thanks mate felt the pace wasn’t too bad despite having bad vision and low energy. Hopefully it is something that I can tune up and perhaps be better off for. I’ve often had highs and lows in my energy so hopefully now needing to monitor it I can get the levels right and charge on!
I really love the different perspective (and the house tours lol), also enjoy scenery, your video show how beautiful it is. Keep them coming
Thank you! Will do!
Sunscribed mate! Can freakin relate to this set up, goin into races, stuffin everything into the car, the bike hangin on the bike rack 😜🤣 keep it up
Thanks for the sub! Wouldn’t have it any other way!
I find these insides really cool. Everybody has seen a pro showing of their real nice pit, but this is far more down to earth!
Cheers mate! That’s the idea, show everyone the World Cup from the privateers lense!
Thanks for a great insider POV mate🎉 Liked and Subscribed and Commenting🎉 I follow Ade Brayton here and his Privateer perspective is great. Wyn has done so much too; I guess he’s been important to you along with Ed over the years. Not sure why I’m saying this, but perhaps it’s because I’ve been shredding in the woods for 60 years and have never seen such amazing progression in our sport as you guys and gals are bringing. My point is that you’re improving us all mate, including this arthritic old man. So, thank you for taking on the shit-bastard UCI: €30 to stay 2km away after paying your Subbies to give them something to sell to Discovery in all the ways is, frankly, profiteering and exploitation 😤😤😤 Ride on hard fella🎉 Also, ❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹 for the shoulder (keep it moving it works for my plated one too😂).
Thanks mate appreciate the kind words! We’ll keep charging on the bikes and keep bringing the content for you guys and gals to see the sport from a different angle!
Huge Respect! Well done!
Cheers 👌
Cool watching you progress through the sessions mate. Tough gig - keep pushing bud.
Thanks Damo!
Living the dream brother. 🤙🏼
Absolutely mate very grateful!
Great video mate, so impressive doing this as a privateer, keep it up.
Thanks mate definitely has it challenges but so worth it!
Loving your videos mate… great to watch in the morning with a cuppa… keep charging dude.. cheering for ya 🤙
Cheers, Appreciate thee support! RUclips and a morning brew 🤝
Unlucky mate, hope the shoulder heals up quickly. So much of that track just looks so bloody gnarly. Hopefully you're feeling more settled in the next one!
Thanks Orin, was definitely a tough one to get comfortable on. On to the next 🇮🇹
That looked like a tough track to get a groove going Hayden …. Still looking fast and hungry for it !! Awesome effort DT Swiss and Commencal and the other supporters for looking after champions at all levels of the sport !
Thanks Steve still hungry and yes Commencal and DT Swiss and Maxxis are great at the World Cups
Unlucky on the qualies mate. Tough gig with the changing conditions! Good luck for Leogang next month
Thanks Orin it was definitely a tough gig but soo fun!
Really cool to see it all from your perspective. Excited for EP8!

Well done m8!.... where is that trail at the start for your training?.... looks fun and flowy!

Unreal effort mate 👏🏼
Amazing work…..
Insane weekend mate great effort
Thanks bloke, was good to get a lap with ya
Noice ⛳
Nice vid mate! We've been flying in and out of Queenstown from Melbs, it works out pretty good for quick missions over
Such a great spot aye, If only we had trails like it in Vic!
I LIVED IN MELBOURNE FOR YEARS, AND IF ANYTHING I MISS MT BULLER INTERNATIONAL ABOMB LONG GULLY AND LITTLE RIVER, I THINK THEY HAVE WAY BETTER RIDING TRACKS AND VICDH SERIES YOU ARE AT THE BEST PLACE THERE, NZ IS TOO EXPENSIVE AND OVER RATED IM FROM NELSON THEY HAVE GOOD TRACKS, BUT NOW IN CHCH WITH THE ADVENTURE PARK AND STILL MISS MELBOURNE FOR THERE TRACKS@@haydenstead
Buller international is all time!
Yes interested in seeing hearing your workout program - thanks for sharing - what’s your top three tips for racing World Cup series please ? All the best for a great season ! Margi B
Thanks Margi thanks for the comment! I think above all you have to make sure you’re having fun, training and racing can be pretty intense at times so trying to keep things fun will go a long way. Have a good training plan and being consistent is important. For downhill you need to be fit but also strong so when you fall you can avoid unnecessary injuries, I have had to find out the hard way :/ Next thing I would say is try to achieve something every time you get on your bike. For me I ride the same track a lot near home because I haven’t got many options so go for laps but one day working on a different bike set up for example then the next working on body position or cornering and making small changes to go faster. Mainly just making sure you’re not just riding aimlessly. At this stage I am still a rookie in the grand scheme of World Cup racing so hopefully in the future I can share better pointers to help out. Cheers.
YEWWWW Go you absolute legend!!! Love your hard work dude!
Legend, thanks!
Swear that's the first time i've ever seen you in gloves bro
Haha was giving them a rip early in the week but definitely prefer no gloves!
Rad!!!
