Thursday Afternoon Rain/Thunderstorm Update
We're tracking a system that's brought widespread rain & clouds to IL today. The good news is that the widespread cloud cover has kept temperatures and instability relatively low, so thunderstorm coverage has been very limited so far. This evening into the overnight hours, thunderstorms will likely develop to our west and push into IL as a cluster or two. While the atmosphere shouldn't support widespread severe weather, we do have a level 2/5 risk in effect for much of western/southern & part of central IL, with a level 1/5 risk for the remainder of the state. We're watching this evening's setup extremely closely, as the potential for significant severe weather, particularly damaging winds, exists across IL. We're most concerned about destructive wind gusts to 80 MPH or greater. Embedded tornadoes are also possible. Have a way to receive warnings tonight, and look for more updates on our page!

We're in the midst of a very active pattern as a ridge of high pressure sends disturbances around its periphery, with the northern half of the state in the line of fire. I assume you mean 600% or 6x, not 600x ("Video speed at 600x"). This is great footage! It also raises the question of why anyone would be driving around in their car instead of watching the eclipse!

@@ParrotsClashpartly cloudy is pretty good because the sudden cooling from the moon’s shadow means it clears convective clouds from its path Edit: I should note this is only for small clouds. If it’s a thunderstorm or something then you’re out of luck
Also if you haven't made reservations yet, the prices for lodging are insane. Hotels know what's up and have raised rates accordingly. As of a few days ago they wanted $700 on Expedia for one night at a hotel. Any hotel.
I found one remaining room for $300 a few weeks ago in Mt. Vernon, last I checked there were a few Airbnb’s still available…for $1000! Unfortunately lots of people planned way ahead for this, makes it hard to make last minute decisions
@@IllinoisStormChasersI made a res a week ago directly through the Motel. I just checked it to make sure it's in their computer. Nothing fancy but it's $121 for the night. No idea if they have other rooms. At first I was going to get it on some "super" website for $60 but it never went through. I immediately called straight to the Motel and talked to a human. Some guy from work is making the same trip with one of his buds. I might see them there.
Best I can tell the storms in the south will hold off until after the eclipse. The big problem will be cloud cover. Hopefully I'll see something. I'm aiming for Conway, Arkansas. I can't trust the forecasts completely and I'm already committed to going. I'm ready to take my shot.

What causes the horizontal lines in the ice near I-55?
It’s actually the ice being forced around the bridge pilings. For most of the video near I-55 the river movement is “towards” the camera, so you can kind of see how the lines are downstream from the bridge pillars.
Lived right at I-55 and Lorenzo with my Parents. It was an eerie sound when it was breaking up....
