In this video, I drove the entire length of Highway 111 in California. It is a 130 mile highway going from Calexico, California, to Whitewater, California, entirely in the desert, running right along the Salton Sea at times with great views. It does go right through Palm Springs, which is quite nice, I've never seen it in the day before, and yet again, this time I was on it at night once again....

My 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage ES has broke, but it was also fixed under warranty. The light for the shifter broke, it was just a simple light bulb, so a very easy fix, about a 30 minute job. But I had the dealer do it, as it was covered under the 36,000 mile warranty.

      @extralock1045 so far I really like it. I had been eyeing the Mirage for a while. When i heard 2024 is the last year model I pulled the trigger to get one while I can, new off the lot. I like the idea of a simple, basic, everything you need and nothing you don't vehicle. Something cheap to own and maintain and is reliable, with quality features for a low price. I own the G4 sedan. I like how the sedan looks better than the hatchback.

    Is it normal for the CVT to feel like it shifts? It seems mine feels like a regular automatic transmission at times. I’m new to the Mirage and I don’t know if certain things are normal or not. This video helped a lot with a few of my questions, I’m always worried about the CVT.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 День назад

      Yes, 100% normal. The CVT actually does shift! It has 2 gears in it, plus a torque converter. The torque converter is like a clutch, it's locked up between 0-10 MPH roughly, then the RPM drops. I heard if it's very cold outside, it can stay locked for longer, and the RPM will be higher for longer. The car is in 1st gear between 10-30 MPH roughly, then it "shifts" to 2nd, which it uses for higher speeds. 1St is more torque, 2nd is for better MPG. The RPM stays the same between gears, but you might see the RPM bounce slightly, or feel the car not speed up for a moment. If you come to almost a stop but don't stop, then step on the gas, it can make a clunk sound, and jerk, that is also normal. Change the CVT fluid every 25,000 to 30,000 miles, 25,000 miles in the mountains/city, 30,000 miles on the interstate in 90F or below weather. Change the paper filter every fluid change, it's also called the cartridge filter, and every other change, so 60,000 miles, drop the pan, replace the pan filter, and clean the magnets.

      @dieselwrench3621 День назад

      @Driving around town and being easy on the pedal 38 mpg and on the highway I’ve seen 53 mpg. I really appreciate the info about the car. I bought it used with all the service records, but there was no record of CVT fluid change and the car is at 58k now so I ordered fluid and both filters. Hoping there’s no harm to the CVT being that it’s 30k overdue. Love the channel and keep the videos coming. 👍💯

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 18 часов назад

      @@dieselwrench3621 You will be fine at 58,000. I would not do that again. But it's okay. Change it at 58,000, then change it at ~ 75,000, so that's 25,000 miles, just the paper filter and a drain and fill, then at 100,000 I'd do the whole service again. Then after that stick to 30,000. Why change it so often right then? Just to make sure it's not all gunked up. But you can likely get away with 30,000.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 День назад

      What do you want me to review? I've done videos saying how to do maintenance on it and what not. CVT, it is one of the only geared CVT's which is neat. It is not very strong in cars like the Nissan Versa, Nissan Sentra, but this car it's better in, as it's much less powerful, and weighs about 1,000 LB less. Change the CVT fluid and filters every 30,000 miles. The engine is aluminum, and had plastic valve cover, the engines are quite solid, not much goes wrong with them. The engine is port injected, so it doesn't get much carbon build up, this engine does not have a turbo, so you don't need to worry about that either. The CVT does not have a full on cooler, just a heat exchanger, it will go above 200F if you really push the car hard, the best bet is to stick to 75 MPH maximum, or 3,000 RPM maximum for a long period of time. Tires, 165/65/r14, they do decent, they have a decent amount of grip, but because the suspension is a bit basic, it's a big high as well, and doesn't have a rear sway bar, it has lots of body roll, but it won't flip over, it will understeer before flipping. The car can feel pushed to it's limits a lot easier than most new cars, but most cars I end up pushing till the tires screech, this car I don't get turning hard enough often. The car weighs 2,084 LB, weighs less than a Mazda Miata, and has a smaller turning circle than a Miata too. Best things to do for maintenance: CVT: Change fluid every 30,000 miles, change the cartridge paper filter when you do the service. Every other change, so 60,000 miles, drop the pan, clean the magnets, and change the pan screen filter. Engine: Every 4,000 to 5,000 miles, change the engine oil, and replace the OEM filter with a new OEM filter. If you drive the car very hard, or drive city, change it every 3,500 miles. Or if you don't get to 4,000-5,000 miles quick, just change it every 3 months. Serpentine belt: It can start to squeak, you must manually tighten it every... Well.. When ever it starts to squeak, or every ~30,000 miles, tighten it. Rotate tires: Every roughly oil change, or every ~5,000-10,000 miles. Keep the intervolves the same. The radiator fluid, brake fluid, I'm not sure how often exactly to change those. Radiator maybe every 50,000 miles, brakes, I'm not sure. If you have more questions, feel free to ask.

    Almost all the gripes on this truck are addressed by getting the next trim level there’s a reason the base model is cheaper than the xlt mid level model, should’ve spent the extra money proof that it’s well worth it

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 6 дней назад

      The hot screen, bad backup camera, (new problem) sensors behind rear view mirror started to smoke, it bricked it's self twice, and as far as I'm aware, the sand paper like plastic is still there on the XLT. The most annoying things to me as the not daily driver of the truck, but the person who sometimes drives it, is the fact it tells you that you are buckled in.. Why do I need to know that? And it has a few messages before the main screen, then you have to press a button lots of times to get it in eco mode. Why are the mirrors fully manual?! Even my car, the 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage, much more basic car, has electric mirrors. I understand manual ones, like a lever on the interior of the truck.. Nope, it doesn't even have that.

    My wife's 2020 Mirage G4 seems to have faster acceleration than your 2024 hatch. Usually gets up to 60ish in 8 or so seconds since she floors it when we merge onto the highway. You do get better gas mileage though, we usually average 39mpg. Almost 55k miles on it and we got it new, haven't had issues yet except for a faulty tire sensor and a battery failure though that could just be age. My father-in-law in law did accidentally back into the Mirage once in his Toyota and it crumpled his rear bumper corner and only made a small indent in the driver side passenger door.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 9 дней назад

      I've never seen a Mirage ever do a 0-60 in 8 seconds. Is she merging downhill? Below sea level, so with a slight gain in power due to a bit more oxygen, my 0-60 is 11.8 seconds. (: 39 MPG is pretty low. Do you drive a lot of city? Or do you drive very fast on the freeway? 55,000 Miles! Awesome! Have you serviced the CVT yet? It needs to be done every 30,000 miles. Don't wait.

      @extralock1045 Right at sea level, live on the coast in Florida. We do highway driving exclusively and it's all straight lines. The speed limit is 45-55 depending on area but everyone goes 65-80. It's always serviced at the dealership every 5k miles. I told her next time she brings it in to specifically ask for transmission service so hopefully they'll do it. I really don't want to lose the Mirage because we both really like it especially since Mitsubishi is discontinuing it.

      @extralock1045 10 дней назад

      Hello! I live in Lake Elsinore, California. The crash test, yes, it is the worst performing new car, but it is much safer than older cars. 1 Thing to note, there are 3 types of frontal crashes, full overlap, the whole front hits a wall, that's the easiest one. Moderate overlap, 50% of the front hits a wall, that's mediumly hard. Then the hardest is the small overlap test, 25% of the front hits the wall. The small overlap test, the Mirage doesn't even fail, it gets 2/4 stars, that is the hardest test out of all of them. The rest are 5/5. Here is the Mirage, and some older cars, but still modern enough to be on the road, for context: 2022 Mitsubishi Mirage, IIHS: www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/mitsubishi/mirage-4-door-hatchback/2022 2003 Pontiac Montana, www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/pontiac/trans-sport-montana-minivan/2003 1999 Ford F150, www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/ford/f-150-extended-cab-pickup/1999 2005 Chevy Astrovan, www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/chevrolet/astro-minivan/2005 The 2005 Hyundai Sonata didn't fail the moderate overlap test, but it struggled, I'm sure the small overlap test would be a big fail. www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/Hyundai/sonata-4-door-sedan/2005 Even things as new as the 2016 Nissan Quest, a huge minivan, can fail horribly with the small overlap test, with 59 CM, 23 inches of intrusion into the footwell area. www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/nissan/quest-minivan/2016 Is the Mirage safe compared to new cars? Nope! But for someone who is driving an older car and wants something new, there is a good chance it's safer than their old car.

    You asked why so many cars on the freeway go along in the far left lane when they aren't passing anyone -- since I developed back issues, I noticed that the farther left lanes are often smoother to ride on, maybe because things like tractor trailers usually use the right lanes so those lanes take more of a beating. Awesome! Will you service the transmission at 30,000? How often do you change the oil? I notice the ABS module with the brake hoses on the firewall rattles a lot. If you tap the ABS module, on the passenger side of the car, it's full of metal hoses, you might hear rattles from the driver side. I found what was rattling, and got a zip tie and put a tad bit of pressure on what rattled, by zipping it to a wire harness. It worked, I think.. I need to drive it more to see!

      That is awesome! Yes, I fully agree! Engine braking is very important! 1 Thing to note, sometimes it is still not enough. A road near me is a 26% grade, the engine braking even in "1st" in CVT terms, the car is at 6,000 RPM at 50+ MPH down the hill while riding the brakes. Not good! In a manual I wonder if it would over-rev the engine?

    • @lynnstillwell2
      @lynnstillwell2 16 дней назад

      @ We were taught that one could over-rev the engine, damaging it. Shifting down in a manual transmission car must be done within certain speeds for each gear. I would shift down slowly, watching the tachometer to make sure I wasn't red-lining it.

  • @OklahomaCoasterFan
    @OklahomaCoasterFan 17 дней назад

    I have the same mentality as you. I prefer going around 55. It's less stressful, less chaotic, better gas mileage, etc. My Mirage has maintained 65-70 just fine at the times I go that speed. The other day, I made a pass on a 2-lane road, passing 2 cars, one towing a trailer, both going 50 in a 65mph zone. I pushed the gas pedal only halfway down to make the pass, and in no time flat, the car was going 80 during the quick pass. It wasn't downhill either; it was level. So despite what people say, the Mirage does have acceptable passing power. I was driving to San Antonio a couple weeks ago, straight into consistent 10-20mph winds, at about 65mph, and the actual mpgs was around 42. For the overnight drive back, I had the wind at my back and empty roads, so I went slower and got great mileage to balance it out. At 11k miles, the car's estimate is saying 51.1 lifetime, actual is 47.75.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 16 дней назад

      You are doing quite good for life time MPG! 47.75 Is a solid number! Last time I went to Texas, I was in the Ford Maverick, and I did feel the need to speed up around El Paso, the speed limit was 80 MPH, the big semi's in the right lane where slamming on the brakes down to 60 not able to pass because the left lane was a wall of closely following cars going 80+. I sped up to 65, then 70, and they still where mad it seemed. Next time, I'm taking the side roads, 55 max. (: If I where you, I would have stayed behind the trailer getting near 70 MPG at 50 MPH.. I am not sure though. I can't work out which is better, 50, or 55 MPH. I only have 1 tank at 50, 1 tank at 55, and the 55 tank according to math was better, the 50 tank according to the car was better, by a lot, it was 70 MPG instead of the car saying 62 or so at 55. So that is still an ongoing project! (:

    • @OklahomaCoasterFan
      @OklahomaCoasterFan 16 дней назад

      @@extralock1045 Yeah, the car's estimates definitely can be quite off from actual, same with my Honda Fit. I usually settle in behind someone going slightly slower than me, as I usually am going faster than what I want to go, just due to the super fast flow of heavy traffic in most places I go. I have driven in Orange Country many times, as I have a friend that lives there, and I stay with him when I'm doing the theme parks in the area or going to shows with him. I made that particular pass because I was running (not late but) on-time, so I didn't want to give up a couple minutes in that case, as I was doing 65. But I bring that up just as proof that the Mirage definitely has adequate passing power, despite what the nay-sayers say. Watch out on the side roads in Texas. Most of those have a speed limit of 70-75, even with just the 1 lane per direction, and most people who drive the side roads are on there because they want to go faster than what they were able to do on the interstate. They get furious with me for not doing over 100.

Magic Mountain is another one of my favorites, but I do have to drive through LA to get there. I like that people aren't driving 100+, but a big reason why is because of the extra traffic. But that does allow me to drive more the speed that I actually prefer to do. The side roads in Texas do have some people that want to go ridiculously fast, but even the more reasonable drivers are still doing 10 over the 70-75mph speed limit on back roads. Oklahoma drivers are a little more reasonable, but still fast. Speed limits keep getting raised throughout this part of the country.

      @extralock1045 15 дней назад

      @@OklahomaCoasterFan The sad part, even if the speed limit is raised to 100 MPH, people will still go 15 over. Why not drive the speed you want? I try to, and for the most part it seems fine. On the 2 lane roads, instead of going slightly slower than the speed of cars, if you go very far below, the person behind won't need to speed up to pass, they can just pass, at least if there are no on coming cars, I hope there isn't. Rural Nevada, up near Ely, and Austin, was very rural. I stuck to 53, to 55 MPH. The cars I did see went pretty fast, but likely due to the lack of cell service and other people around, they kept the speed more reasonable. (:

I don't quite understand why someone would get such a large SUV in the first place. Something like a station wagon would be better. Or a Subaru impreza. They get significantly better gas mileage. And are safer to others like bikers and people on foot. If they SUV hits somebody it's a lot worse than if a car hits somebody.

    Great video! Love that it's different and you're in a Mitsubishi showroom! It's a shame that the Mirage is being discontinued because America desperately needs more small affordable fuel efficient new cars. Unfortunately, the Mirage stopped being a great value for money car in the past 3 years. When you have to pay 20k out the door for a Mirage (or more for the SE trim), then you start thinking "should I pay a bit more for a bigger faster Elantra, Forte, Corolla, Jetta, Sentra, Trax, Maverick etc.? For example, I recently helped a friend buy a brand new top trim 2024 Nissan Versa SR for 21k out the door. This Versa SR is faster than the Mirage, more spacious, has heated front seats, remote start, 6 speaker audio system, blind spot monitoring, rear automatic braking, nicer wheels, wireless charging pad, bigger trunk etc. So why pay the same price for an inferior Mirage SE?

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 17 дней назад

      The main question is, does America really need small cars? I say, Yes! But the sales don't reflect it, sadly. Like, the Honda Fit, it is in my opinion the best overall small hatchback, seats fold flat, you can also fold them up so you can roll a bike into the back seat area upright, very good space on the inside, people say the Mirage needs more power, well, the Fit had more power too, and even a 130 HP 6 speed manual option.. And it still didn't sell good... Even with the Honda badge with absurd reliability and MPG! /;

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 17 дней назад

      You have a good point about the Versa. My worries with the Versa is the reliability, being it's a cheap car, it has cheap parts, and all those extra features which are cheap parts means more to break. Also the fact the CVT is the exact same between the cars, the less heavy less powerful Mitsubishi puts less stress on that very expensive part. MPG also, it gets 50+ MPG. The turning circle is tighter than a Mazda Miata. I recommend the hatchback over the sedan though, as the hatchback you can fit an absurd amount in it. The bottom trim level Mirage is $18,110, out the door after tax it was $19,951. So let's say $20,000. My mom bought the bottom trim Ford Maverick XL Hybrid, it was $27,000 out the door. That's a whole $7,000 more, for a worse turning circle, it's broke down 2 times, and broke 4 times so far, in 1/4 the miles the Mitsubishi has been around. It gets worse MPG too. It doesn't even have electric mirrors. The thing is, every car, you look at the price, and go "well, that one is only X amount more, I might as well get that one instead". And end up looking at cars like 3x the price of the one you started off looking at. The SE Mirage does come with quite a few of the features the SR Versa has though, it has auto high beams, auto wipers, remote start, push button start, leather seats which are heated, alloy wheels, lane keep monitoring, front crash mitigation too, but it also keeps it simple, it's a true, honest car. The Ford Maverick shows messages on the gauge cluster for quite a while once you turn the car on, if I want to see 1 screen, like tire pressure while pumping the tires up, it will cover the whole screen telling me the door is open, so I have to press "OK", to get rid of the screen, but then you close, and reopen the door, and that warning comes back. What really makes me annoyed is the fact it TELLS you when YOU buckled in! If you're buckled in, you know it! You don't need to tell me that I am! Yes, sure, tell me when I am not buckled in, I fully understand... But if I'm buckled in, don't cover the whole fricking dash telling me that! LOL. Maybe I just don't like all the tech, lots of people do. I drove the Ford 7,000 miles total, it was alright. It didn't get blown around as easy, only got 46 MPG on the highway at 60 MPH, VS the 60 MPG I get in the Mitsubishi at 55 MPH. It was more quiet, which I didn't care for, it turns out I need sound to make the drive more fun rather than feel like I'm playing a video game with the sound off. It just feels odd.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 17 дней назад

      Another thing, according to some websites, the Mitsubishi Mirage is rated just as reliable as the Toyota Corolla, scoring a 4.5/5 on the Repair Pal website. And adding the fact it has a 100,000 mile warranty, it makes it even better. So: Less annoying features, turns easier, better MPG, more engaging ride, more reliable(?), cheaper, maybe easier to work on(?) it looks like it at least. Plus a slightly cheaper price tag. But it does miss some features the Versa has, but they aren't things you need either.
