Making a Sword Kiln - Wiring Update
Просмотров 59День назад
The kiln worked great, but it took a long time to heat up. I realized I had wired the elements in series instead of parallel. What this meant was that it was running about ½ power. While this is great for the life of the elements, it wasnt what I had designed or wanted. After the wiring change, I was able to get 1600C in 15 min and a stable heated kiln after 35ish minutes. Much better. There is...

    Does soaking it prior to forging make it pop at all while you work it? Billet looks good and clean but I gotta think if there were ever any pockets or inclusions that thing could pop and open up after it’s heated and hammered. I have no experience forging but I saw an episode of forged in fire where a contestant did something somewhat similar with water and it wound up making small explosions and pops with the metal that seemed pretty risky and didn’t make sense to me. If memory serves he made a decent piece but sketchy process

    • @solarstorm50
      @solarstorm50 Месяц назад

      Ive never had one pop from the oil. That all burns off rather quickly. I have had slag from the flux fly off and land on my hands when hammering, but even that is pretty rare. I suppose you could get flux in a pocket and have that squirt out when pressing or hammering, but so far its only from the hammer that I have been hit with slag.

Then drew out the ring with the hammer and then curled it round the horn and a small hardy mandrel I made. Files to round it off. Once I was happy with the ring I then formed the top of the guard and cut off the excess (had lots of excess, but better to have too much). Had to heat and tweak it a couple of times as I added the spacers and antler so that they met up perfectly. Was a bear to sand smooth for the bluing because I really couldn’t get any automated way to work, so I used the Mk 1 fingers, some music, and an occasional touch of scotch.

    Bob, First of all I love the tracing the historic pieces concept. From what I have heard is some of these ancient blades were based of a the curves of animals that they had scene. I was thinking to myself, how cool would it be to come up with a shape design for knife based off a native North American Animal? If we could find a pose of an animal and build a functional useful knife overlaid the same way you did here, but over an animal and show the transition of photos to completion, bet it would turn out to be a great video!!

    • @solarstorm50
      @solarstorm50 3 месяца назад

      The best shapes are always found in nature! I find most of the blades refined their shape from some useful purpose. Be it short for close quarters, long curved Calvary blades, bludgeoning blades, piercing, etc. I know when I build a blade, I typically name them. That name quite often comes from an animal. Venom for the heartbeat spike in the Damascus, Cobra from fangs on the guard, a dragons claw. So I think you absolutely right. Might have to look around.

      I guess if you victorious fighting off the bear, you have time to sheath it. If you weren’t, it really doesnt matter…

    Honest question, how much cleanup is there with the air gun?

      honestly its quick, I dont clean between the colors, just start with the lightest then spray until I see the new color. then at the end spray varsol through it and then take the tip off and let it sit in the varsol for 20 min. take it out and dry it

      Cant say that is my idea. I saw it on a survival knife and thought that makes way too much sense
