Given the relince on private land ownership, word is not getting around quick enough. Can't see why public land isn't being used and organised.

Seems awfully and intensively unnecessary to disturb the top layer root structures of the soil

100 millions trees is admirable, but at this stage still too little too late. What the project seriously needs is some sort of waged labour such as the many public sector works who have no choice but to pointlessly mow down a roundabout or stand in the cold during carbon intensive road works, we can't rely on the pithy whims of councillors and private land owners.

In late Feb 2024 via the 100 Million Trees Project we had 14 native Irish Tree varieties (saplings) planted and by September 2024 some of these are already at elbow height. The trees fill in a small field area that was not being used too much so we are delighted about the whole thing. Thank you to the whole team at 100 Million Trees as well as the professional forestry teams involved in planting. We are glad to have this mini-forest and we left a little path through the middle so that future generations of kids and animals can enjoy the beauty of it from the centre too.

The Miyawaki method also advises to mulch heavily around the saplings among other things.

Great idea but I have a feeling 100,000,000 is unrealistic. Aiming for 250,000 this year is 685 trees a day, 1,000,000 in 2025 is 2740 trees everyday, then you only have 8 years left to do 98,750,000 - it would need a 57% increase YOY every year for those 8 years , topping out in year 10 at 36 million trees or 101,136 trees planted every single day 🙄😞

Inspiring

As a tourist to Ireland in 2022 it was clear to me how much of the land had been cleared of its forest compared to my home province of Nova Scotia Canada. But that's due to only a couple of hundred years of settlement here and many thousands of years in Ireland. A great project, one that the people can intuitively support in Ireland, good luck in meeting your goals.

I love this tribute - such a great effort to improve the natural environment by adding more trees and remembering a loved one in the process.
