Hmmm... i enjoyed this video. I liked the relaxed and easy pace and delivery. I liked the opening sequence (thought it was hilarious, actually, with its gentile dignity getting photobombed by the skater-dude). Liked the pics. But the lens... hmmm (again). Preferred it to the Samyang in the side-by-side. Truth is, i'm already a sucker for Taks, but i don't have any of the 35's - so thanks for reviewing this one. What i do have is a lot of Spotmatics - most often, when i buy a Tak, there's one of these things stuck on the back. Anyway - Lkd&Subd. All the best from a cabin in a swamp in a rainforest in New Zealand. Cheers!
Thank you!!
Nice video, lens looks good. My only suggestion is to maybe use some background music that is more contemporaneous with the time of manufacture of the lens (like early 60's when it was first made, or early 70's since that is the version you are using). Anyway, that is my take.
Honestly I write and make all the music and I just didn’t have time.. But that is a really good idea and I will try that for the next vintage lens I cover. Thank you.
Which would you start with?
What do intend to use it for? I started with the 24mm
@@GMTNeil Mostly people, fashion, narrative. I think I will start with the 45mm. It would be my "mid" lol. 75mm and 35mm will be next. I am on APSC also (FX30). It is my style, from the distance like a fly on a wall. Do you know if they work with Gyroflow?
@nyambe I have never tried with gyroflow. But if it is from a distance 45mm is a great start (and one of my favourites) and will be similar 67mm full frame. The FX30 is a great camera so it would be a great combo. And as you add the other lenses they all match well.
I need some Help! If i buy the 35mm for example and get the anamoprhic adapter Am I then able to use the autofocus? because the V-af irritates me and is this lens for Fullframe ?
When using the adapter no it is manual, as soon as you attach the adapter auto focus stops working. It’s a shame maybe one day they can update it but not sure how as the focus is purely manual.
Do you know if the rest of this set(24,35 and 75) also have the anamorphic “mumps?”
Can you post an example of 24mm spherical lens + the 1.25, on aps-c sensor, with no cropping in post? Ive looked everywhere, and cant seem to find anything.
It’s on the intro of the other video you commented on “Sirui anamorphic adapter with an autofocus lens” The beginning bit with the dog, that’s on an APSC crop at 50fps on the 24mm The APSC crop on the A7IV literally just uses that part of the sensor it’s not a crop in post. I don’t own an APSC camera at the moment but the APSC crop is exactly the same as an APSC camera as I compare it to my old A6400 when I had that as well as the ZV-E10 (original).
Awesome thx for the detailed reply. If i asked more than once, its because i was asking on a bunch of videos and spaced out! The shot of your doggie looks great for my purposes. I posted what im using on that other video. Thanks again!
Please comment as much as you like, honestly I am happy to help. I wanted to make it easier for you to see what I meant. On a cropped sensor you it will work well.
Is your vignette in the beginning a full frame or crop sensor?
Im just trying to figure out if the adapter vignettes on a 24mm samyang/rokinon on crop sendors. Thanks!
The intro had it on an APS-C crop, the bit where I am talking in the room, that is full frame with no crop. After that I crop in a small amount, still full frame.
Thx! So just so im clear, your doggie at the start is 24mm lens+super35 sensor mode in your camera, and its not trimmed/cropped edges in post? I see no vignette at all in that shot.
P.s. i have the ol’ manual samyang/roki 24mm. My reason for looking at this adapter, is that i got a few more primes, and a canon ef. I cant afford right now to get all new cameras and glass, but im getting back into filming. I favor the 24mm out of my lenses, but its just a smidge claustrophobic on aps-c.
Nice video on a classic
Nice review, thanks. Helpful. Did you try the Blazar? It's also around the 1K range.
Not yet I will do but it’s still 1k I have to pay for :) Though I will be after I sell some stuff and I am looking forward to giving a proper look at them as they are very hyped and I want to know if they are as good as people say.
would you recommend these for a beginner, i do not do photos, just beginning trying out videography
Yes very much so they are not too expensive and light so you can start your journey with these lenses and if you find it’s not for you have not wasted too much money on something that is not for you. To be honest I am very happy with these lenses and can’t imagine parting with them. Shame they only work for Sony cameras at the moment.
Thank you!
I am really struggling to decide between this, the Tamron G2 and the Sony 20-70 4! Thanks for your review.
This might help or not, for low light G2 abs the sigma. For light weight for travelling the sigma. For the faster autofocus G2 and the Sony. For sharpness the Sony followed by the G2 and the sigma. For the ultimate travel (for daytime) the Sony. I have the same problem deciding myself and I think I might as well stick the the sigma it’s a great lens it’s not as if I am pro I just enjoy what I do and the lens still looks good to me.
@GMTNeil Thanks! I'm definitely drawn to the size of the Sigma. One thing that concerns me is the close focus performance at the long end, several reviews say it's "dreamy". I do take lots of flower pics so this is fairly relevant, although I suppose in reality I would stop down a little anyway. Oh, and the Sigma is more expensive on the used market which is a bit annoying!
From personal experience I have never had a problem with the sharpness on the long end. The pic of the lady walking. The dog at 5.03 should give you an idea at 70mm. Any lens wide open close focused at 70mm will give a dreamy look, stop it down to F4/5.6 and you will get a very sharp picture.
Hi, Happy New Year. 1st day of 2025. I have saved for 2 years to buy a camera. Now the question is should I buy a7iv or should I wait for a a7v?? Please do give your opinion. I will blindly follow whatever you say.
If you have waited 2 years I would say wait a few more months and see what the A7V brings. If it’s not a bit upgrade you can can get the A7IV for a lot cheaper if it is a big upgrade then you know you are getting the better camera. For me I probably won’t upgrade straight away but if I was in the market to buy I would wait a bit longer. If there is no release date by April then I would just get the A7IV it’s still a great camera or maybe look at the A7C if you don’t need to card slots and a bigger body. Happy new year to you!
hello have you had any over heating on this camera while filming?
No never. I have used it some very hot and humid environments directly in the sun. Though it is still possible but personally it’s never been an issue.
@@GMTNeil damn. if you're ever getting rid of it and want something else. I'd be willing to buy it off you
Nice vid. I have had this camera for three years. Great all-rounder. Sensor quality doesn’t disappoint for photos. Agree with most points on the rear LCD. Think they will go with 44Mp on the sensor as that sensor exists already. Will keep mine for a bit more. Does what I need it to do.
Thank you!
Would you recommend this system?
You know what I would, the individual lenses are great and light and just fun to use and I have no objections with the image quality. The anamorphic adapter does actually give a nice classic anamorphic look. But after using a light lens then putting the adapter on the front it does add some weight so it is good to be aware of. I do love the look it gives though. Overall I do think it’s worth it and if you are using more than one lens with the adapter it makes it very cost effective as well.
@@GMTNeil Yes, I have never really used anamorphic. My idea is to build for the future. It seems like a no brainer to have cinema lenses that have autofocus. Having Anamorphic is just the icing on the cake. I wish the sold it in flexible sets. Will start with the 75 I think. Thanks
@nyambe my favourite is the 45 as a good all rounder, the 75 on anamorphic and the 24 is a great one to get too.
Great video, it was hard to find a video with the noise of the ulanzi fan
my girlfriend gave me an olympus that came with the lens for $10. I am so excited to use this lens!
It’s really fun to use.
What camera did you shoot the talking head part in the beginning with ? 🔥🔥🔥
It was a Sony A7IV the lens was more than likely a Samyang V-AF24mm T1.9
@ ahh makes sense!!
You are very good. Keep it up
Hi neil- thanks for your videos. I was an early adopter like yourself and got the adapter back in july i think. i have the exact same issue with the 75mm but on the left side. I also have the 35 and 100mm v-af with no apparent problems. Before i get into this wrangle with samyang can i ask did they replace just the adapter? As i would like to be ablle to continue working with lenses and it is less of a problem if just the anamorphic adapter is missing for a month. Thanks and thanks again for your work on this.
Hi yes they did replace it. I contacted Samyang head office first (I recommend you do that) and then look up who the local Samyang repair company is in your area and also contact them. I hope you get it replaced and please let me know how you get on.
Very helpful video along with the follow up video did. Thank you! One question, I also have the adaptor, and when I'm shooting on it, handheld - it seems to shake (with or w/o IBIS) - like the it's not stuck somehow on the lense, really comes off amaterish and unusble - did you run into anything similar? Again, thank you for the filim community work on these videos :)
Yes you right I find if I hold it my body and record sometime even holding my breath for a moment. I also make sure it’s level as well (sometimes I get it wrong). The problem with anamorphic it really shows the wobbles and micro jitters. I found just get contactable maybe around chest hight and try from there. So times a little post editing too (but just a little not too much). I also want to add thank you for your comments, very kind of you.
@@GMTNeil Likewise, thank you for your reply. It's so important for us all when we do generous info-sharing work with such clarity :) - Thanks for your feedback and reflection, I'll just go tripod on it and get over it, haha :) -- hopefully that way it'll be good :)
@fearkillwrite tripods are the best for this. But it is possible. What model camera are you using? If you don’t mind me asking.
@@GMTNeil I'm using the Sony 7a iv :)
@fearkillwrite you should be able to get great results with the A7IV it’s a really good camera. I use mine a lot.
Leider sind die Adapter von Samyang doppelt so teuer und schwerer als die von Sirui, also keine Empfehleung, wie sieht es mit der Bildqualität aus bei Fotos?
They are heavier but with a much bigger squeeze factor and more of the classic look. It’s also easier to mount them. Never tried for photos. But it would be good with the full sensor.
Thanks for your efforts testing and checking with Samyang. I send them a message long time ago asking about the 75 problem but never really got a response. I own now the 24mm and the 45 mm and I haven’t seen any problem with them, but it’s helpful to know if for some reason the 75mm just lets you know if there is a problem with the adapter. The focus ring sound yeah… mine doesn’t have that much but depends on the unit I think it’s probably quality control. If I were you I will ask for a replacement and tell them about this specific thing, you bought it and it’s not cheap so I think it’s fair to ask for the best. Anyway cheers and thanks again for this videos, you are the only source of information about this adapter thanks mate 🙏🏻
Thanks for the video. i had bought the anamorphic adapter too. and i think the one i got looks okay with the 75mm. did not have the blur issue you had before. Cheers mate
You did it thoroughly. I wish you did another video covering outside environment. That would be perfect.
Maybe I will revisit in the future. It was a very rainy day when I recorded it.
hey. thanks for the review! is the sound audiable to the ear? Do you think a condenser mic would it pick it, say a meter away?
If you have it on the lower setting it should be fine, it also depends on how much you boost the condenser mic. I tried it with Rode NT1 and I didn’t notice it at all.
hello appreciate your review, i just got this lens like it, but i have a question, which lens filter you have, i dont mind to block the green light. thanks
When out I use a freewell ND with hard stops. I sometimes use a mist filter when at home if I want to soften the light (it can stop the hard light). Both are 72mm filters with a 58-72 step up ring.
i have been using it for a while on A7R III. i would suggest Tamron further improves it. Maybe it can be.. - F5.0 - 5.6 - improve sharpness at 500mm. - inbuilt 1.5X tele converter. Then charge us slightly more. @TamronVids
By a complete - not BUY
lol I was so busy checking everything else I don’t check that typo. Updating
Tamron, come on and join the L-mount alliance already will ya?
Doubtful that they will due to sigma. But you never know.
@@GMTNeil Samyang entered the alliance. Still have hope.
@BootStrapTurnerVideography hope that Samyang give the V-AF series, they are so much fun to use.
Is the lense parfocal? Does it keep focus when zooming?
I have never actually tried, I am presuming not but I will give a try and get back to you.
it's a great lens, that's for sure. But tamron 150-600 G2 is already an incredibly sharp lens wide open, other than having bad autofocus on LA-EA adapters. The issue with new mirrorless zooms is that they have flat backgrounds because their projected focal point is closer than that on DSLRs. That subtle distance is enough for DSLR lenses to cast brighter subjects in front and dimmer subjects in background, the so called "3d pop" that all mirrorless glass lacks while all DSLR lenses have, due to the inverse square of light.
I know about 3d pop and I own a fair few vintage lenses. I also have owned a lot of DSL lenses that are extremely flat so just because it’s and older DSL lens does not mean it will get. I used cannon DSL cameras for years and still have some lenses but I feel no need to adapt them to my Sony cameras as it’s not that special. I have some really good lenses that “pop” and will be doing some videos on my Takumar lenses in the future. But for this lense I wanted sharp I wanted good auto focus (birds etc) and I wanted something I could travel with as I spend a lot of time in the Japanese countryside and I love getting the wildlife there. With price performance and weight these ticked all the boxes for me.
@@GMTNeil well the tamron definitely delivers, but some people are not rich gear reviewers that can afford the Sony G Master 100-400, most of us are like you but still in the transition phase. I was really happy with my worn out A77II til the main screen died and realized how dim the viewfinder already become when i tried to adjust the brightness thinking I accidentally made it dark, and there was no difference between the minimum level and the brightest setting. Also had 149K cycles and the faux leather wrap went out. Replacing the skin alone was €121 handwork not included so you do your math and ask yourself if it's worth spending €1000 on refurbishing something just for the sake of comfort. I could hunt an A7IV new for €1900 at a VAT free day in El corte Inglés and I'm very happy it's neither a dud nor a used camera. The journey to transition to 24-70/70-200 and 150/500 begun.
@kingghidorah8106 to be honest I think most of us do not need that level of gear. I would be happy with a 6700 or cannon R10 or R7 but the reason why I chose Sony is for the lenses. Lots of choice and easy to adapt as well. I have never really felt the need to get a G Master lens to be honest, unless I was getting paid for this I don’t really need it. Good luck with your journey!
@@GMTNeil I was going for the a6700 but there are two main issues: mechanical shutter is limited to 100K actuations and 1/4000, and the viewfinder is a carbon copy of the A77II I used except that Sony now randomly caps the resolution to half in certain situations, and when using the 120Hz mode it always goes down. So it's a full HD viewfinder turning into an HD viewfinder. The A7IV does this too, but at least I'm assured a 2K viewfinder turning full HD. Also G Master lenses are extremely overpriced, for a product that is now made out of aluminum and plastic instead of magnesium alloys and the severe focus breathing issues across all Sony G and G Master lenses.... not worth.
Thank you for a great review. Yes 85mm is a good lens. Who takes photos of pages in a book? Though I understand the test.
It’s a new genre :) It was the best way I could show it at the time, and I like to show any negatives as well as the positives to keep it balanced.
@@GMTNeil You did the right thing. Price to performance is the best.
Wonder how’d this fare versus the 75mm F2 TTartisan
I don’t have a TTartisan to compare but I will try it against another 75mm F1.8
With the issue of the 75mm being unfocusable: What T-stop were you at once you started noticing these issues? Usually any anamorphic lenses dont open their iris up very wide because of issues like these. As long as they perform well up until T3.0 I'd still consider them incredibly fast for anamorphic lenses.
It focuses but a third of the screen is out of Focus. It’s not due to it being open as I mostly shot at T4 to T8, it is an actual fault as documented in the video. It only effects the 75 the other lenses where fine.
It is great! I am using it all the time for low light wedding videos. Manual and autofocus. No need for any other 85mm.
I went (almost) all-in with the Rokinon V-AF series, buying all the lenses except the 20mm (24, 35, 45, 75, 100) as I knew that wouldn't work with the anamorphic. I've since also purchsed the MF adapter, and the 1.7x Anamorphic as each came out. So I've had the anamorphic for I think a few months now,. But admittedly I was not aware of any issues with the 75 as the anamorphic lives on my 45mm. I'll have to do some tests this weekend and see if mine has the same issue. Hope not, but glad to hear you are working with Samyang to see what is the issue.
I am sure you will be fine and looks like they will be sending me a new one, I will test and update once I receive it. The 45 is my favourite so far so I can understand why the adapter is on it.
hello do u know how to update Samyang 1.7 Anamorphic? thanks
Hi, you update the lens it attaches too, so say you have the 35 and 75mm V-AF lenses you connect them to the Samyang lens station and download the latest update. So you have to get the lens station. But they seem to do regular updates. It’s important you do as the adapter will not work until the lens is on the latest firmware.
@@GMTNeil I have 24 35 45 75 100 ,but I just want to know how to update 1.7x
@VargothZ I can’t see a way of doing that. Out of interest why do you need to update it?
@@GMTNeil I think I can not use vaf100 for 100% Focusing the lens
I would try doing the software update to the 100mm lens again it might not have loaded properly if that doesn’t work contact Samyang and let them know (they will probably point you to your local repair centre) Let me know how you get on I hope it can get fixed.
just wondering, what is the name of the lens mount adapter that you use?
It’s an OM-NEX (NEX is Sony emount) as there are no electronics it’s fairly cheap.
Bro how you colorgrade this
I used a mixture of film convert nitrate (film emulation) and then dialled in the rest to my liking. but i love adding film convert as the basic layer just adds a natural look to it I like.
Update, Samyang has the adapter and are investigating. I will update as I have more info.
Well, let's hope it's just a defective unit that can easily be replaced.
I have had their head office comeback to me so I will update the outcome.
@@GMTNeil please let us know i am waiting the good news
@alan701 got it back and making a video on it, should be out this week depending on my work schedule. It works!
Great Testing! I bet that in iris F4 that setup would glow even more. I felt in 2.8 It looked a bit too dreamy. Every lens open wide iris is its worst rendition of detail, add to that all the periferical detail the anamorphic adapter sucks out off the image. Would love to see more of your test in F4 and higher. Keep up the good work!
I will revisit it at some point in the near future for sure
@@GMTNeil Thanks it was very helpfull
Have you contacted Samyang about the 1.7 adapter for the 75mm problem? I’m looking at their support page and i don’t see any firmware solutions, at the moment.
Yes I checked for firmware updates and have emailed them today with the video as an example. I will update if or as soon as I have any feedback.
great opening music with the footage
Thanks for your review! I’m worried about the 75mm problem! I was planning to get that lense and I will definitely test that out if I can before buying! It’s quite helpful that you are sharing this issues and even got another lense to test it out THANK YOU for all the effort put into your review! I will try to put video test with my lense ( the 24mm V-AF in crop mode) I’m using focus peaking and focus map and for sure it’s quite hard to focus when it’s T 1.9! I’m testing also clear image zoom, 4K maximum quality, HD, slog, S-cinetone and all those things! It does change the image but also depends on the lighting environment. Also I’m planning to get the Dji focus pro and see if at t 1.9 you can get very good focus fingers crossed 🤞
I think it will just be mine, it’s not the lens as I have tried 2, I am going to keep testing and, it only seems to be focusing at different points like infinity. If you going to use the 75 it is going to be more likely for close focus and that seems to work ok. But I think it’s just the one I have. As for a focusing a monitor with a zoom function helps a lot but sometimes using out and about I try not to use too much equipment especially on my own as it increases the chance of being robbed. It’s fun to use though and the image is lovely, my favourite is on the 45mm.
Stopping down?
@meyerdigitalfilm closing the aperture. So not wide open at T1.9 but going to say t5.6
Thanks for this review! Im planning on getting this kit of lenses and this video and the one u made of the V-AF kit was really helpfull!
Thank you!
Very cool! Lindsey Optics have a cool filter solution for this. A 95mm clamp, with threads, allowing you to add 95mm screw on filters. This is huge, as it allows for the use of fairly cheap 95mm VND, mist filters etc.. Simmod makes really high quality 95mm diopters.
That’s awesome I will take a look at that. Thank you.
Hi Neil, love your reviews! I am on an anamorphic journey, too, and I am learning from you. I bought the Sirui Venus 35mm, 75mm (due to the Creator) and 150mm. Struggling with squeeze factor varying with focus, though. What is the music track at 9:45? I really love that music! Thanks and greets from Berlin, Martin
Thank you Martin, love Berlin a fantastic city great people too I have very fond memories from when I was there. I know what you mean about the squeeze factor I always go if I am close focusing that it’s going to more like a 1.4 or 1.5x squeeze depending on the lens. A lot of it is guess work though and adjusting it in post to what I think is right. I am sure you could measure it but to be honest if it looks good who cares. I am considering a set myself I have the APSC Sirui lenses and am tempted get the full frame version. Thank you for the comment on the music, I make all the music in my videos, I had a guitar channel before this one. Thank you again for your nice comments.
@@GMTNeil Wow, your music is wonderful and so different across the tracks! From classic / cinematic to cyberpunk electronic! I really love the piece at 9:45. Do you sell or license music too?
To be honest I just do it for fun, thank you for your kind words.
With the focus mapping I am in the GAS danger zone, dare I wonder if the same is true for the spherical focus adapter. Did a check the zv-e1 supports focus mapping.
It does and I will go into that a little in the full review (editing it now). Not tried the focus adapter yet but I hope to in the future.
