Hot Springs/Cold Springs Training Hike
I just watched this video not knowing when it was made. My radar went up as I heard familiar names being used. I grew up in SB and did lots of day hiking but never packed there. I always went to the Sierra’s. Thanx for rekindling those great places.
Hey, it's you, Piper, from BPL! I'll have to see what other videos you have here. (You just popped up on my YT feed today.) I like the mix of fancy pre-made gear and stuff you made or modified. Shows an independent mind. :)
Glad you enjoyed my quirky mods. I'm just an old lady LASHing my way through various trails.
What a lot of good modifications! What sewing machine do you have and what needle did you use for the poncho and backpack?
I have an old household Pfaff I bought at an estate sale for $35. Microtex needles are recommended for all these types of fabrics so that's what I use and I use ordinary all purpose thread.
@@dianesoini Thanks for your reply. So your pfaff is mechanical. I only have a mid range electronic machine, I’m not sure it could sew those lightweight fabrics.
@@SparkyOne549 None of these fabrics are particularly difficult to sew. A lot of the clothing that people make at home use similar fabric. Chiffon, taffeta, various kinds of polyester or nylon. The only thing I have trouble with is cutting some of this fabric. Anything with dyneema fibers in it is impossible to cut. Easy to sew though.
@@dianesoini Thanks for your reply. Glad to hear it’s easy to sew through. Did you use a rotary cutter instead of scissors?
@@SparkyOne549 Rotary cutters don't seem to work very well for me because you have less control and if you didn't get it cut through it's very hard to go back. Regular shears and scissors worked fine for the things I sewed in this video. The fabric for the pants and poncho is very easy to cut and sew (although maybe hard to make it look perfect). The pack only required seam rippers to open the seam, nothing else was cut. Sewing through the pack fabric is as easy as sewing anything else. Sewing through webbing is easy. The dyneema composite fabric is hard to cut with a chopping motion and impossibly to do a clean cut with a rotary but even with cheap basic scissors, if you can get a glide going it cuts great and sews easily. The best place to get info is r/myog on Reddit.
You've got some good things there. Very eclectic and practical. And you make some of your gear. Thanks.

How creative and thoughtful...thanks for sharing
Nice to see what you carry for your many long distance adventures. Many creative tweaks. Thank you for sharing.
"Piper" , I just found your channel and i'm enjoying following you on your journey. I'm glad you enjoyed my brats and soda. It was nice to meet you . Safe journeys , "goat".
Hey cool! Nice to hear from you. I had a lot of health and sleep issues that I think were related to not getting enough salt and your brats gave me one of the best nights of sleep I had in a long time! Thanks again!
You are goals 🙏🏼
The palante with nashville straps is genious. Best of both worlds
Gorgeous flower photos! They fill my soul. Great video!
I much prefer flowers to tundra that's for sure!
Man those little burrs are SO ANNOYING. I have yet to figure out a way to easily get them off. When did you do this hike? We did Devils Canyon to Gibraltar dam and the Devils Canyon portion was almost impassible.
Beautiful pictures!!
Happy to see Harris flag on those vehicles. Beautiful country, but you sure have to work hard!
Wow! How did you get so close to the fox?
@@Merrose he was not afraid at all
Very nice!
🙌
Good luck Piper! Enjoy your hike!❤
How long is that hike to the hot spring and where do you start from? Thank you for the videos!
It's 10 miles one-way and you start at the Piedra Blanca trailhead on Rose Valley Road near Ojai. This hike is better done any other time of year than summer or early fall.
CDT! Yay good for you Piper!
Yes, I'm going to try to do another chunk of the CDT! I'm probably going to be the slowest long distance hiker to ever walk through Colorado.
Love the tent!
Nice Trip, I have been curious how the road was between Little and Big Cali, looks tough even with a mountain bike. I have been wanting to take my bike down to Middle SY campground but the Forest Service says it and P-Bar are closed but I guess there is no one around to enforce that! By chance, did you see any fish in the SY river? The dam caretaker at Gilbralter told me when Jamison spills, trout will go over and populate the river and lake.
The bikers I saw would ask how the road was. I thought it would be hard to do some of the washouts carrying a heavy bike but I'm not sure what strong men can do that I think is impossible. They all rode in from Juncal where the gate is closed. I think I vaguely remember seeing some tiny fish somewhere, maybe in the SY.
When you’re pushing through lots of poison oak over multiple days, how do you deal with that exposure? Do you wash your body with soap and water and sleep in a clean set of different clothes each night? Any tips to dealing with PO oils?
If I touch it with my skin I try to wash my skin with some water. Try to rub it away with water, maybe put hand sanitizer on it for good measure. I try to avoid touching it as much as possible on my clothes or bare skin, use my trekking poles to hold it out of my way, step gingerly, etc. I sleep in my clothes. I sometimes get poison oak and it's really just an annoying rash, not a life or death matter. If I do get it I try not to scratch it and I find Claritin offers relief. It's good for insect bites, too.
@@dianesoini thanks for the reply and tips.
Nice trip. A friend a I go camping down there. Thanks for sharing.
The surfer at Leads was on a foil I believe. I see a lot of them at Goleta beach and Campus, some motorized, some not. Gibraltar road just opened!
A foil! I have never seen one before. Looks fun!
I sure hope the next generation pays attention because we cannot let this music die. Sounds beautiful!
Congratulations!

Beautiful bee hive. Such perfect honeycombs.

Hello, I analyzed your RUclips channel and found some problems. That's why your channel subscribers and views are not increasing. Can I identify problems with your channel?
Wonderful!
Congratulations!
Well, congratulations! What a beautiful event (I won't say specifically so as not to give it away to those who don't know). You both look very happy. What a beautiful lead-up to the main event, too. I love your Mom's rock art, and where she lives for that matter.
I watched your full Arizona thru-hike and loved it. I loved your comments throughout your videos. Also, I loved your lightweight gear setup with your tarp and bivy. I hope you get to do more hikes! Thanks!
Promo*SM 🏃
I wish I could do that. I always donate to the trail organizations when I hike a trail. That'll have to do!
Thanks for doing the trail maintenance. Those of us who use the trails greatly appreciate the volunteers that do this work. I sure miss living in Ojai and being able to go to the Sespe wilderness. The mountains around San Diego county are just "ok".
That was my first LPFA trip. It was more fun than I expected. Moving big rocks with the rock bars is pretty fun. Sitting around the fire telling trail stories is also really fun.
Thanks for sharing! Beautiful country! i had to chuckle - in all of my long hiking trips and even some short ones, that last mile or two to the end or to camp or to water ... always the longest miles!
Congratulations on getting through with your thru-hike, from before sunrise to after sunset. It was amazing to see (one?) lupine blooming in November. That was a very beautiful area with rocks and big cone spruce, and of course great views throughout. And a surprise/not a surprise to see a mountain lion on a mountain.
Thank you. For being a road walk most of the time it was still quite a challenge and extremely beautiful. Seeing your progress hour after hour is great, too.
Gorgeous sunrise and sunset, and great views from Santa Cruz to Catalina islands and the coast from Santa Barbara to Malibu. How lucky to live in such a place and to have someone who can show us the "overview." Thank you.
I love the views, the oaks, the rock formations, your ambition to go from Gaviota to the Ventura River. It reminded me of J. Smeaton Chase's book California Coast Trails, the story of his 1911 horseback ride from Mexico to Oregon. The most memorable part of the book, to me and I think to him, was his stay with a Mexican American family on their little ranchita at the top of Refugio Pass. I once knew someone who lived at the San Marcos Trout Club who would run from there to Gaviota when he was a teenager (also with the last name of Chase, but no relation to J. Smeaton). I love the way you show what you saw with minimal commentary, immersing viewers in the experience. I think it's an act of respect for the experience and the landscape. It looks like it wasn't an easy hike, but a peaceful one. There's nothing like getting above it all to gain perspective.
Thank you. I had never been around the Refugio Pass area before. It's really beautiful with the madrones, oaks and bay laurels. I found a listing for little ranchita "Rancho Dos Vistas". If only I had $15 million! I grew up in Goleta and have lived in Santa Barbara my whole life. As a kid I would look up at the mountains and imagine what was up there. I finally went up there to see.
More specifically, at Manzana bridge/ Nira.
Hi Piper, i parked my van last week for 5 days while Backcountry hiking and wondered why you were issued a violation by a los padres 🤡 clown? Happy Trails .
The parking area is now "operated" by a private contractor and an adventure pass is required.
Why did the knuckle heads ticket your car? That is the epitome of dumb.
Hi! Great tips! Could you post some links or names for the material? I am a non native speaker and find it hard to understand some of the product names. Thanks!
You should have camped at the Atlantic City Campground! I'm the host here.
I heard there was an RV park but I didn't see one. Maybe next time if I ever am in the area, but with an RV, not a tent.
