Value of Gold vs IWC Pocket Watch
After recently failing to win any Gold Pocket Watches at auction, I re-evaluate the market and discover why my estimates were so short of the mark.
Gold has gotten so valuable it threatens the provenance and history of these fine Pocket Watches. Since the making of this video, Gold has gone up another 20-25% and reached record high prices over USD $2,500/ounce in August 2024.
Makes you wonder how many precious historical items been lost to time and poor choices.

    And I guess this explains why there are so very many more raw movements available on eBay, etc., than there are complete watches. And watches aren't the only victims. After both of my parents had passed, I sold some of the family silver, and a non running white gold wristwatch that had belonged to my mother. I was told that the silver and the watch were of an outdated style that no one buys anymore, and that they would be melted down for their gold/silver content. I had already committed to the sale, and wasn't entirely surprised, but it did give me a twinge of sadness.

    • @watchodyssey4894
      @watchodyssey4894 14 дней назад

      Yes, many movements are for sale without cases. It does present a cost effective opportunity to try your hand with a watch service. I'd highly recommend finding a movement that is already working vs one that isn't (that skill comes later). It's tough to sell an heirloom but sometimes we need to let go.

      @@watchodyssey4894 Oh, I have several of those, mostly Waltham, Elgin, and the like. Great source for spare parts of course. Also, living in a New York-sized apartment, you learn to let go of stuff quite easily. This also means I will likely never own a lathe, Jacot or otherwise. Not as pretty as the Vanguard, but no slouch either. I am new to the watchmaking hobby, and so I have chosen to not do a full service on it, but just de-case it, ultrasonically clean the case, Polident for the dial (works wonders, doesn't it?) a light touchup on the lubricants, and some regulation, (which I am now doing) as it is running quite well. 27:00 Is that hydrogen peroxide solution in the bottle? I have an old Rolex steel watch from the 1980s. It has stopped working and lost its shine over time. I want to restore its exterior shine, but I'm not sure how to clean it at home. I have hydrogen peroxide, citric acid, baking soda, and dish soap (neutral detergent) at home. Trichloroethylene blend (or better known as "One-Dip") - I'd use that primarily for hairsprings, jewels and small parts needing extra attention. For a stainless steel case on a Rolex just a mild dish soap would be fine, definitely no acids! If you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner, those are excellent for Oyster cases and bands, consider L&R's Ultrasonic cleaning solution.

      @vjsjwiduxhshjfhdiiwk6717 Месяц назад

      @@watchodyssey4894 Thanks for the advice. I'll try cleaning the watch with dish soap as you suggested. I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner at home, so I'll just fill a bowl with water, put the watch in, and shake it a few times before taking it out. Even though the watch is broken, if I can restore its exterior shine, it will be more enjoyable to appreciate it at home. 😄😄😄

    • @watchodyssey4894

      I don't recommend full immersion if the movement is still in the watch and the seals are that old, try a small painter's brush to work your soapy suds in and a quick rinse first. I checked the price, and it's quite expensive. I had no idea and have been handling it carelessly. I can't believe it's white gold...
