Indian Peaks Wilderness, CO // Father + Son Backpacking Trip
A very special overnight backpacking trip in the Front Range's premier wilderness area, the Indian Peaks. My dad and I started at the Monarch Lake trailhead, spent the night at Crater Lake, and took a side trip to Pawnee Lake. It was an absolute blast to hike and take pictures and video in this beautiful place!

A Saint among Saints - Hiking San Luis Peak, CO
Просмотров 20712 часов назад
I'm back to finish off the 14ers in Colorado's San Juan Mountains with one of the easiest (and, honestly, least interesting) peaks. It was still a great and relatively easy day in the mountains! #colorado #14ers
The Steepest Climb I've Ever Done - Crestone Needle (CO 14ers)
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.21 час назад
I venture to Colorado's Sangre de Cristo Range to climb one of its best 14,000-foot peaks, the Crestone Needle. With its fantastic, solid rock and airy exposure, it was a top 5 14er for me and one I will absolutely return to! #colorado #14ers #mountains
The Trail Ridge Road Skyline Traverse // Rocky Mountain National Park
Просмотров 40714 дней назад
On North America's highest continuous road, several nearby peaks form a prominent skyline for drivers and sightseers in Rocky Mountain National Park. Thus what I'm calling this traverse of several of these peaks, the "Trail Ridge Road Skyline Traverse". Great views and fun exploration in a seldom seen part of the park! I started this from the Milner Pass Trailhead, and the summits I climbed (in...
Lower 48's Hardest Highpoint - Glacier & Snow Free Route on Gannett Peak
Просмотров 72421 день назад
There is no question that Gannett Peak, Wyoming's highpoint, was the hardest mountain I've ever climbed. I did this as a three-day backpacking trip from the Green River Lakes trailhead, itself nestled in the Yosemite Valley of Wyoming. I ascended Gannett via the nonstandard Southwest Couloir route, which had no required snow or glacier travel, so I could leave the crampons and ice axe at home. ...
San Juan Gentle Giants - Redcloud & Sunshine Peaks (CO 14ers)
Просмотров 24721 день назад
A relatively chill pair of 14ers was in order after a week of hard San Juan summits. I took the standard route over to Sunshine, then dropped into the basin northwest of Sunshine for a boulder hop / bushwhack back to the main trail (which I don't recommend). Any peak in the SJ's is a blast!

The bad weather before dawn almost turned me back, but I pressed on... and later bad weather didn't give me a choice! But that's part of the fun of the mountains and I couldn't be happier about how the hike and the video turned out. #colorado #14ers
Colorado's Middle-Earth -- Solo Backpacking the Most Isolated Fourteeners
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.Месяц назад
The beauty and 14er peak bagging opportunity of the Chicago Basin area in Colorado's San Juan mountains was calling my name this summer, and it delivered! I climbed all four named 14ers in this trip, in order: Windom Peak, Sunlight Peak, Mt. Eolus, and North Eolus. I did it over three days starting from the Purgatory trailhead with two nights camping in the Weminuche Wilderness. 0:00 - 8:10 Day...
A Truly Great Traverse - El Diente to Mt. Wilson (Colorado 14ers)
Просмотров 300Месяц назад
Two Colorado Fourteeners in a row in peak San Juan mountain country. This was a blast, though I don't think I'll repeat it! I definitely needed this perfect-weather day to complete the traverse safely that ridge is not a place to be when the lightning comes. I did this on 8/16/24.

Hiking to North America's Highest Lake --- Tenmile Range 13ers + Quandary Peak West Ridge, CO
Просмотров 8262 месяца назад
My first trip into the Tenmile Range near Breckenridge to bag some 13ers, plus Colorado's most popular 14er, Quandary Peak, by the non-standard West Ridge scramble. The other peaks I climbed are Father Dyer Peak, Crystal Peak, Pacific Peak, and Atlantic Peak. Plus, drinking from the highest lake in North America, Pacific Tarn, at 13,400 feet. An awesome day in the hills!

    coming from Cottonwood, this was this the South face, or a variant (Crestone Peak southface to Needle)? What are you thoughts on a 4am start from Cottonwood Lake linking to Crestone Peak, descending the NW couloir to the East ridge to pick up Kit Carson Peak and Challenger Point before back tracking to The Prow for a descent to the Spanish Creek trailhead ? This has been on my list for 12 years.

    • @montaneist
      @montaneist 2 дня назад

      This was the standard class 4 route up the Needle, just coming up to Broken Hand Pass from the west side. That route you described is definitely above my pay grade! I don't know what the route looks like between Crestone Peak and Kit Carson, I'm sure it gets into class 5 terrain though (I know the Prow is class 5 too, I suspect downclimbing that would take a long time). Sounds like a long day so certainly a 4am or even earlier start is best during monsoon season, though waiting till Sept/early Oct will give you more time/better weather.

    Same. Worse. Easier than Longs Peak Trough?

    • @montaneist
      @montaneist 8 дней назад

      Definitely more difficult technically. The angle of climbing is steeper and the exposure more severe. The trough has some loose rock, whereas the Needle has almost none. As far as mileage and elevation gain go though, they're comparable

    I was just out there on Saturday. I discovered if you go too low on the Cracktop-Julian traverse that things get very confusing on the maze of ledges...I assume either you did the ridge proper (in which case the first bit down from Cracktop seemed rather serious) or cut down and around that first bit and then stuck to the ridge afterwards?

    • @montaneist
      @montaneist 13 дней назад

      I stayed on the ridge proper mostly, except for one or two spots where it seemed to go class 4 / low 5, and I was able to find a kind of roundabout class 3 bypass. Maybe that's what you're thinking? Just consistently following the easiest-looking way down to the saddle seemed to work fine for me. I actually wasn't expecting any scrambling so it was a pleasant surprise

    • @montaneist
      @montaneist 29 дней назад

      Not much more than the standard essentials--food/water, extra layer, rain gear, emergency kit, etc. Tripod is kind of cheap/low quality, but it's light and only takes a couple seconds to set up. Pack is Osprey Stratos 24L. There is definitely room to go lighter, e.g. with a trail running vest but I'm happy with this setup
