Hello all, I've been working in tech related industries for over 30 years. I started back with the 8088 and have watched the industry grow well beyond what I could have imagined when I first started. My interests go well beyond computers and computer hardware. I'm interested in all things tech. Solar, audio, video, wireless, really anything that beeps or blinks and I want to know more about it.
We will explore all the above along with tutorials on social media, web design, web marketing and all manner of how technology can help you communicate better and be more profitable.
We hope that you'll come along for the journey, and we look forward to seeing you here on the channel!
Thank you for watching.

As prices on older Nuc products drop, are they worth considering for gaming, productivity, or general computing? I guess it all comes down to the all-in price. Amazon has the i7 barebones version for as low as $350. But you’ll need a GPU that fits in order to make it really useful beyond basic office work. In this video I’ll take a look at the performance as compared to my daily driver, an Intel 13700k w/ RTX 3090, a...

I've been running one of these as server since release. Works great but it's NOT quiet enough to have next to you during full load if you're used to quiet stuff.
hi do you think a rtx4060 would work in this NUC?
those nvmes u see at walmart are mostly bought by ps5 buyers/owners
Would you recommend this mini PC for running MATLAB and CAD? I’m looking for something for college for electrical engineering.
Great video thank you so much!
Meant to edit my comment and accidentally deleted it...whatever. Thanks for the video. It's too bad about the CPU being a lil' underpowered, though I do wonder if that can be alleviated somewhat because those compute element modules can be swapped? I do know there is an i9 variant of this...or maybe newer compute modules based on newer generations? But then it becomes how much money do you want to blow trying to get this system how you want it... Oh and yeah the RTX 4060 option, I'm sure there is one out there that would work. Perhaps a solo fan design like you mentioned. I assume that's what solo means anyway...
Hey there.. Thanks for the comment. I definitely want to try a 4060 in it.. I have a test, long ongoing testing, looking at various GPUs vs CPUs looking for bottlenecks and a drop in performance, i.e. does it make sense to put a 4060 in with an i7 9th gen laptop CPU or are we just waisting our time? I'm actually working with this system today getting it setup for a Civil Air Patrol project. I have a single fan MSI 3060 12GB in it with 32 GB ram and I'm setting it up to run X-Plane with the full set of RealSIM G1000 simulator panels. We are taking the whole rig to an airshow here in El Paso next month. Let me know if that kind of content interests you all! Cheers Rick
@@DogRiverDesign Hey, yeah I do wonder as you mentioned again this particular system seems underpowered for 'workstation' type work i.e. video editing due to CPU limits. Seems like it was targeted at gaming outcomes. I do have interest in how CPU and GPUs bottleneck each other at what points (i.e. what CPU and GPU compliment each other well so there is a nice equilibrium in bottlenecking each other. Must be honest I don't know what X-Plane and flight simulators really do. I feel like at 5L size, you could do better building from the ground up with some ITX case or something. Perhaps the advantage of this 9th gen NUC extreme is that it's outdated and has dropped in price. If what I said doesn't make sense it's because I don't have a strong understanding for the modern trends and hardware hehe...
you said that the dual mini is probably the best graphics card available for this pc (The one that you have in your NUC), i was just wondering where you found yours and if it was available. Overall though, I really enjoyed this video because i have been having problems finding a GPU for my NUC. Thank you so much.
Hey there.. Thank you for your kind words. I got my 3060 TI on Amazon. I was fortunate to get it at a very good deal. The other option would be the MSI Aero model RTX 3060. It's not the TI but it's got 12GB VRAM and still games pretty good. Hope that helps.. and THANK YOU for watching! Cheers Rick
Hey there.. Just looked on eBay and they have one for under $250. Don't know the seller, but seems you can get them on eBay if you want to go used. Cheers Rick
@@DogRiverDesign Thank you so much for being so informative and helping me find this GPU I've been looking for a while now.
Thanks for the video
i was waiting for the "initial post".
lol....yes you did make a mistake......you should have grabbed the lenovo....:)
Thanks for the information when I get to video editing I'll get with you
I got this for 519, with tax, 560. It comes with rtx 2070 max q, i7 9750h, 1 tb and 32gb ram. Did i get ripped off or was this a deal?
hey there.. you got a GREAT deal in my opinion. It's a great little computer. I hope you enjoy it!! Cheers Rick
what a great video, I was just looking into updated details on this, specially when it comes to GPUs.
Thanks Dan! Let me know if you have an specific questions.. I'm happy to help. Cheers Rick!
Thank you.
Hello 😊
great video
I BOUGHT Mine used for $450 , Z1 EXTREME with 2TB . so even with the compromises, its well worth it
At that price for sure! Cheers Rick
Nice
'Promo SM' ✔️
Good deal I payed over 2k years ago on Amazon but it's a great unit👌🏻👌🏻 not a extreme Pc gamer but I love it
Hey there.. TY for watching and replying. I simply could not pass up that deal. It's a great and very fun unit to experiment with. Cheers Rick
Keep in mind things changes as time go ahead. As of today the rog ally is a great choice back in your time having something like this was star trek level ahead of time. Fast forward not look at it. With little compromises you can play desktop/laotop level games in the oalm of your hands. We dont have nuclear fusion in a handheld yet so of course it will be battery issues. Give it a few years that problem will be solved.
Hillarious: I have had my Rog Ally for Three Weeks, I game more now than ever before. So your experience, is going to depend on your expereince. I have not gamed since I was a kid. I took notice of Nintindo Switch, and began gaming again. Then I got an Xbox, and hardly ever used it. Then I got the Rog Ally and I use it all the time. I am more prone to play if it is in my hands. And because I am obsessed with Batteries, portable monitors, I have everything I need. And because it is windows I can hook a drawing tablet into it, and draw (with my external monitor). Loving my Rog Ally! I do not want a laptop, I want a handheld. And eventually, an even better one will come out, but for now, this is awesome! However I still listen to you old school gamers, because I learn from ya'll. Thank you for yoru point of view, liking this video!
I got XG Mobile 3080, when im at home, with xg mobile ally will become gaming beast when docked, and also use external monitor
It's PERFECT if you are NEVER home and always on the go. I am still deciding between this and steam deck smh
Dude buys a gaming handheld PC, tries to use it like a laptop, then complains that it doesn't work like a laptop. I really liked your Used GPU video though. Just keep pumping out the videos you'll find your niche. Godspeed.
Hey there.. thanks for watching. Actually, I bought it as a handheld because I'd never experienced the form factor. When it was so problematic during start up, and I found the gaming (for what I like to do) so limiting, then I started trying to find another reason to keep it; i.e., can it be useful outside of just a gaming device? When it fell flat on all fronts for my overall use case (again, nothing against the product, just did not suit my needs or wants in the end) I found that a laptop was a better fit for me. Again, thanks so much for watching. I have a lot of things in the pipeline that I need to get through so please keep watching and commenting. Cheers Rick
The laptop that you talk about at 20 minute mark does exist, Its the ROG Flow x13 gv302 (2023 model), really improved trackpad (much bigger), 120hz Full HD screen, thin 13 inch package and well cooled (same cooling as for the models with a DGPU). It runs the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS with the same igpu that the Ally Z1 Extreme has (the Radeon 780m) and it was on sale at BestBuy for 750-800 dollars. Only issue is the 16gb of non upgradable RAM, but the RAM does run at 6400mhz which helps get more performance out of that igpu. And then you can come back home and use the XG Mobile dock. I got the laptop, now I am looking for the dock at an attainable price so if someone knows where to get one without breaking the bank (help a student out) let me know :)
That sounds cool. When I was looking (I shot this video many months ago) the 16x was a far better deal for what I was looking for in the long run. On the doc, keep your eyes open at Asus directly, best buy (clearance items), and ebay. Cheers Rick
How's that battery life while gaming? 1hr 15 mins?
@@Cakebattered Good question, I usually play plugged in at my desk and rather not too often, but maybe I'll take it to play on the go and I'll let you know
Here's my problem with these handhelds, if I'm on the go or in bed, do I absolutely have to play my games? I just don't see that as a necessity, why can't I catch up on some shows or just browse the web? I could play games but the problem is a device like this can ONLY play games, I mean you could watch your shows on this but it's far less good at that compared to say an iPad. Basically if you go the iPad route, you cannot play Cyberpunk 2077 but you can do anything else really well for many hours, in a very easy to carry package. Where as if you go handheld, you can play Cyberpunk 2077 for ~1hr and then you're done, you can't do much else with it, and it's a rather thick device to carry. So really at the end of the day you would ideally want some kind of general purpose device, like a laptop. I mean this compared to a laptop the only thing it's got going for it is you don't gotta use an external controller. But what if I don't even play that many controller games? I mean there are very few games that are significantly better on controller. But there are many games that are significantly better with keyboard/trackpad.
Hey there. First of all.. thank you all for jumping in the discussion. I'm brand new here and this video has already done WAY better than I had ever expected. I'm not new to RUclips as I have another channel close to 100K subscribers. I hope to bring the same "real world" use case scenarios to my Tech Channel as I do my other channel. Regarding your comments.. I'm 100% on board. If the Ally suits your gaming style, then awesome. But for me, it's just not the ticket. But given all the glowing reviews I thought I'd give it a try. I didn't see anyone coming at it from my use case. That's why I wanted to put out the content. I'm not dumping on the Ally or other hand held gaming devices, I just now know that a laptop is a much way to go. Thanks so much for watching. Cheers Rick
I only need to see/read this title "ASUS ROG Ally - Way Too Many Compromises - Why a laptop is SO MUCH BETTER" to know something is very wrong with this video, hence won't see it, the moment you compare a gaming handheld to a freaking full fledge laptop you are better of seeing something else.
Hey there.. then you miss the point of the video. I bought the Ally with high hopes of it fitting my use case. It didn't. It's a great piece of tech, but it fell short of my needs. I'm not comparing it to a laptop for everyone, but for me a laptop is a better choice. Cheers Rick
However a desktop or laptop would be better all around of course but especially for multiplayer games where those extra frames are needed
if you want only single player games and portable 360 and ps3 games its worth it.Steam deck for alot of 30 to 40 fps pc games which is fine and playable usually and older emulation since you can game at lower wattage then yeah.I dont have the oled version tho.I can say that most games i turn settings to med or higher and fsr then cap at 40 to 45 fps and with vrr its lovely.
You are not the target audience if you start thinking to buy a laptop instead.
I completely agree. But I did not know that until I bought one and tried to use it. It just doesn’t work for my use case. It’s a good piece of gear for those it does work for. Cheers Rick
at least he tried it out and didn't just say buy a laptop lol. i tend to agree with him on the mindset that i don't think its worth it for my use case. i rather just buy a gaming laptop that's much more functional and kills current mobile pc handhelds for the same price or a few hundred more.
@@LCJammer While the MSRP is $700, its almost always on sale. Bestbuy is selling it for $599 right now. What gaming laptops are you recommending at that price point?
dumb video for dumb audience. its like comparing ship to a plane and saying why plane is so much better than ship as both serves the same purpose of taking ppl from point A to B.
Great video, I love seeing other opinions and use cases. I tend to agree, by the time I get the thing to perform at the level I need it to be at I would be better served by a laptop.
Wut, a gaming laptop is more expensive, I bought mine for £467 with 2tb of storage. And the gaming laptop uses way more electricity.
Yeah. Not really concerned about power being that I’m in the US and electricity is affordable at my office. My house is off grid so power becomes more of an issue, not because of cost but rather battery capacity. The little laptop in the video does not draw much and does not impact my house batteries much at all. As for costs, I’ve seen some crazy deals lately that are even a greater value than what I showed here. But that’s only if the ally doesn’t work for your use case and your be better served by a laptop. For me a laptop is a better way to go. Cheers Rick
For me personally, the ROG Ally is a perfect companion for playing games casually every once in a while, the portability of it far outweighs anything a laptop can provide, that being said, I also have a main rig with a i9 10900k and a RTX 3080 and a Macbook Pro M1 Pro, this is solely just to play some games on-the-go and play while my partner is watching TV, nothing more, it fills in the gaps of what was never possible in the past with PC Gaming scenarios. The XG Mobile is only meant for those who make it their main gaming rig, besides that, there's zero market for the XG Mobile unit. As for battery life, I'd recommend a 65W PD Capable powerbank, there are plenty of cheaper options nowadays, and extends the stock 1hr battery life on AAA games to around 3 hours , plenty enough for playing on the couch till body discomfort becomes an issue.
I dont have an ROG Ally but I do have a steam deck. I use it exaclty the same way that you do. I can enjoy my games while away from my desk. It will never replace my gaming PC, but I will also say that after this experience I will probably always keep a handheld PC around as well. It has its place and I enjoy it.
@@docrx1857 That's awesome bro 👍🏻👍🏻
It really needs a better battery. That's the only thing I found wrong with it. If I wanted to have a permanently docked handheld I'd just play on my laptop.
That is the decision I came to as well. Cheers Rick
@@DogRiverDesign Though its definitely really good if you are looking for a powerhouse emulation device and didn't want to fuck around with your nintendo switch just to play older games you physically own. Which was my case.
@@Salamander-11 - yeah.. maybe I'll look into emulation at some point but that's WAY outside my use case. I'm glad it's working for you. The Lenovo Legion Go has me interested in looking forward to what will be around the corner. Also the MSI Claw. I think it's a great new market. I'm sure that I'll get back into it at some point. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Cheers Rick
@@DogRiverDesign I would avoid MSI computers and their bullshit "we dont do repairs" customer service. I had a terrible experience with the MSI Stealth line and it kept trying to self immolate on idle for no reason for years and was burning a hole through its casing despite there being no heat generation where the hole was being formed on the bottom left corner of the laptop. Up until a forced windows 10 update finally killed the thing in the middle of the night. There is next to no ventilation on their machines and I don't regret dropping them for a Lenovo Legion. I have had no such issues with the Rog Ally or Lenovo machines. They're quirky but not nearly as bad as Windows 10 being way worse than windows 11 is.
@@Salamander-11 - interesting on the MSI laptop issue. I got one early on during my reentry into the PC world and it was so incredibly loud. I couldn't take it. I traded it to someone who didn't mind the noise. I really like Lenovo gear. I have worked with several over the last few years. Currently I'm using ASUS gear. The Flow X16 and the Strix 18" that I got over black friday sales. The Strix 18" is simply awesome. I use it for content creation and expect that I'll stick with it for a good while. My eyesight is poor so the 18" screen really makes a difference. Thanks again for watching. Cheers Rick
I bought the Asrock Rx 6800 XT, also a new cage Cooler Master mesh V2 and Asus ROG Thor 850 w PSU. Obviously I've saved a lot... Like 6 months, living in Argentina, suffering inflación, not eating at middays, to save money. Well, I'm happy. I don't trust best cheapper components. Using Gigabyte b550M H , 16 gb ram 3200, Ryzen 5 5600 g with stock cooler, I'm having 56 C at max CPU and 53 C on GPU. Playing all max quality. Really don't care fps or overclocking stuff. But was using an Rx 580 8g and the is a big difference. The GPU is big. It's silent, stable and cold. Thanks for the video!
Cool setup. The 6800 XT is a great card. It’s not the “newest” but it kicks butt and plays games. Thank you for watching and for commenting. More videos to come :) Cheers Rick
