0:50 is a fabulous sight! Flying down the hill from Jesse's Seat. I like that Chilworth has a plaque. I grew up in Dorking so we would've travelled this line a lot on the Tadpole units.

I heard a steam train subbed in for unworkable electric trains during a recent cold snap in Britain. That is cool, if true.
This is true. In December 2009, heavy snow fell in the south of the UK (which is the most recent time we have had snow fall in the south of UK) and Steam Train 60163 'Tornado' helped out a passenger service between London & Dover (Kent). It also helped on the East Coast Mainline around the same year for the same exact reason

Amazing how once the Bulleid craziness was removed how effective these locomotives have become. The boiler was one good thing and I remember someone remarking surprise at how after the Brentwood Banks had been mounted by a merchant Navy the locomotive was blowing off steam which was a novel experience.
