Since you were wondering, and others in the comments had the same question, Strathmore's cotton paper is 500 series, which they classify as "Premium". I think the 400 series is called "Best" because it's the best line of cellulose papers they offer. The 400 series is good paper -- I love the 400 series drawing paper -- but if there was any cotton in it, Strathmore would be bragging about it. Also, the difference in results between the Strathmore 400 and Canson XL is because the Canson XL is a lower quality paper. It's student grade, probably most comparable to Strathmore 200 or 300. Canson Montval paper is probably most comparable to Strathmore 400.
Thank you so much for the breakdown, this is super helpful to know!
I’m surprised this isn’t cotton paper in this. The 400 series is supposed to be the best stuff.
Apparently there is a 500 cotton series. I didn't know, just learned it from a commenter here :)
@@HelenAveryArtChannel You’re right, I actually have two of the 500 series books, not sure what I thinking.
I also love the talens art creation sketchbooks, yes they may not be the best paper for watercolour, but like you said I don't have to feel too precious about it and can freely explore and have fun. (And the little one you had was A6 size🤗) I also dont like bright sap green-daler Rowney and Daniel Smith are really nice.
A6! I knew I was way far off even as I was saying the words A4 or whatever it was I said, hahaha! Thank you! And also I agree, people are too hard on this paper's quality, it's totally fine for what it is. Ooh nice tips for the sap green, I'm gonna try those. Thanks for leaving this great comment!

Oh I love to hear that you're planning on getting into watercolours! When the time comes, I hope you enjoy it! I found it quite frustrating at first but then I got in a different mindset (relinquishing control) and that seems to help. Looking forward to your next video, Glen!

This is great! Thanks for advice, speaking of shorts if you made long form videos and remix shorts out of it should you wait to post the shorts too?
You're welcome! It seems to me you can post shorts anytime, anywhere, anyhow...they don't seem to have any bearing on longform videos or even on themselves. Threshold for shorts seems to naturally be around 400-500 for my channels, I've noticed--I have two channels, the only reason I dare to give advice is because I have so much experience on the larger one! :)

Great pens! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you 🤗 What's your top pen of the moment?
@HelenAveryArtChannel Pelikan m200
Never too old to start, I've always been artistic, however, it's only in the past couple of years my wife has been learning to paint, she is nearly 40
I love that for us!
Being left-handed, I never got on with fountain pens, however a good fineliner is great for signing my collages and if I need the add a bit of drawing to them.
This is a cool comment because my parents were lefties and I grew up in a left hand household, so everything from the hand soap to the dishrack to clothes on hangers even today I keep exactly how they had it and it always looks to be on the wrong side when I go to other people's homes, lol! Love a good fineliner.
Uhhm, not sure why I received this?
If it's any consolation, I made the video and I don't know why you received it either! 🤦🏻♀️😂
Oh well; Howdy - and YOU GO GIRL ❤
Haha epic response!! Thank you for the well wishes!
I may have mentioned them on another of your videos but have you tried the Papermate Inkjoy white pens. I like them better than Gellyroll but I don't use a white very much either.
Oh yes, we did chat about this the time I made the full length video about the Gelly Roll. I’m not sure I’ll ever need to buy one though at this rate. I’m just not using it much at all! Appreciate you sharing the deep knowledge you have on pens! ❤

this is calming. Random question, would you ever take up like gardening?
You're so nice. I used to be an avid gardener, especially vegetables in my small patch of backyard! But then my garden got really shaded by mature trees and not much would grow. Ah well!
Sony ZV1 mark 1 or 2 might be the right camera for you, Small, great quality video easy to set focus. I use it for all my unboxing top down shot video and its very cable as a talking head camera. You can also just plug in a 3.5mm lav mic for simple audio or use wit lav mic in the future. Maybe a small learning curve but nothing you can't google.
Thank you for the tip! I had the Sony ZV-1F for a short time but didn’t like the image (specifically Sony skin tones) but I’d be willing to figure out the learning curve. Also that was years ago before I knew as much about camera settings and some small adjustments I could have made
between black Friday, thanksgiving and Christmas, I was working overtime so I was mad tired (not necessarily angry and tired but "mad" in this context would mean like "very" or "much") and so by time the holidays came around, all I wanted to do was sleep it off (which I did, very peacefully). I feel like the stickiness is what they want you to towel off lol. Also, I've never been out of the country before so I liked the footage of you going out on the town, I always assumed that Toronto look like what cartoonists say Holland looks like but after seeing it, it looks a lot like New York. Also, do you use electronic devices for artwork or is it all physical? Love your work and hope your channel gets more recognition. Your pal from Threads, UnbalancedMinds.
Sleeping it off is really underrated! Glad you got to recharge. I think you're right about the stickiness, but it absorbed too fast! Maybe after 1 min I could have taken it off but it was all dried up by then, hahaha. I love hearing about how others see the city that I'm so used to looking at. Fun to see it with fresh eyes. Funny also you say that, times when I've visited Brooklyn that felt very homey to me. All physical art for now--I love the sensory side of it and the sounds that come with it. Thanks for the kind words! Hope to see you more around here, I appreciate your support on Threads and over here!
Thanks for testing the Osmo Pocket 3 with this video, although this model is popular currently, I think I will now pass on it, and stay with my aps-c camera Nikon Z30. By the way, really like your channel. Try the Z30 or ZV-E10 and other cameras like Fuji or Panasonic. Lots out there. Best of luck with your channel. I always like a creative artist! and what you do. I went through Illustration in college myself but it was more technical, but did take some fundamental painting lessons as well, and also took photography courses. Cheers!
Thank you for the kind words and the advice, I'll definitely check those cameras out!
While I think an iphone for video is pretty good. I think you might want to consider looking at the Sony ZV-E10 or Nikon Z30 cameras (and the Nikon Z30 has the creator combo with remote and handle). They are better suited for vlogging in selfie mode and light weight and good for capturing product video and along with Nikon Z 12-28mm lens. But again, no problem going with the iphone as you prefer, it will work well. Thanks for tips on pocket 3 having a few issues. The tiny screen does not do well for me which keeps me from buying it, although the Pocket 3 was a huge hit for sales in 2024, promoted by creators, and as best seller on Amazon. Again, everyone has their preferred choice for videos and many creators use a phone with good LED lights. I prefer a bigger camera APS-C or FF. I have the Z30 with wide lens and creator kit. So whatever works is all good. Just offering my opinions.
Thank you for the tips! I appreciate the recommendations and always love to hear what other gear people are using! I knew about the Sony being a hit but must confess I hear about way fewer people using Nikon, so I learned something here too! Yes the tiny DJI screens were a killer on my eyes OR I couldn’t see it at all. Not the fault of the cameras but eventually a sticking point for me. I know better now!
@@HelenAveryArtChannel Hi Helen, one other tip, if you do try out another aps-c camera like Sony ZV-E10 or Nikon Z30 which are made for vlogging with articulating screen, for times you have the camera on a tripod focused at your artwork or painting, you might try switching to manual focus (set the point) instead of auto-focus if the distance of the camera to painting is not too much, and the lens is set about F4 or F5.6, if the art surface does not move, the focus will not change or hunt as your brush moves in and out next to the painting. If the camera is further away or your painting is moving in frame, using auto focus is fine. Make sure you have enough LED light for F4 or F5.6. Nikon Z30 is 20mp and Sony is 24mp. 20mp with its bigger pixel pitch has less digital noise in low light due to physics, as the size of each pixel gathering light is bigger on the sensor causing less noise. Have a great! Really like your content and presentation. Cheers!
This is great! Thank you for being so specific...I'm (almost) tempted to invest in a nice mirrorless again! Perhaps I will!
Nice video, ignore the noisy pests. Keep doing what you're doing and live your best life. BTW, I tried to follow the lav mike link but it went to the wrong place..
Thanks so much for your support! I'll update the link right away - thanks for letting me know!

It's been the best discovery of last year for me. Thanks for the support!
How did you learn to draw the flowers? I wanna draw them too! lol. Let me know. Your friend from Threads.
Hi Joyce! From Camilla Damsbo here on RUclips...check her out, she's great!
If you're just starting I have one bit of advice.. Art takes skill and practice and not inborn talent. Do not make the mistake of taking the words of some people who doesnt understand the concept of progress. You do you! ✨
Totally agree! thanks for the words of wisdom!
Lovely, and fun! Thank you for sharing !
Thank you so much for watching!
I love how you just go for it. I'm so hesitant to do traditional art because I'm terrified by "mistakes". At least with pixel art on my computer I can erase and redo as much as I need to...which is a lot, lol.
Thank you for saying that! I love your pixellated icon here, it's so cute. Just try it! Who cares if you make a mistake, it's all good!
You made it mate! Hater comments mean you're on the right track! Subbed. I started my channel as I hit 40 and it's been the best fun! More power to ya!
Subbed back! Thanks for the fresh perspective, I needed that today! Let's do a great job :)
I been telling this artist friend of mine, she only needs an iPhone, but she’s thinking about some $2k+ cameras. I probably wouldn’t sell the R50 tho, any DSLR camera takes better photo than iPhone. I’d have a proper camera to take picture of my artworks. :)
First I LOVE your channel, your videos are so inspiring and visionary!!! Second YES, you totally don't need a great camera for RUclips (no one can tell the difference unless you're awesome at cinematography and own some nice lenses) but agree with you, nothing beats an actual mirrorless or DSLR for photographing art! Perhaps she'll consider the R50: it's really good!
@ thank you! I just realized I commented on your shorts instead of the video 😂
@@Gnaboaixno that’s ok! I realized! Haha
Hey ! I've been doing watercolors since 2 years I think and I really do love it ! But lately I feel like my skills are not improving, do you think it’s because I do not practice my drawing skills ? If so, how can I do that ? Buying books about it ? Following tutorials ?
Oh I don't have a great answer because I feel the exact same way! But specifically if you want to get better at drawing then yes, I've used a mix of library books and tutorials, and even some still life websites where they have images of fruit etc you can practice on. Or sometimes I look at still life from the impressionists and I copy to practice.
I just came here from your thread post!! Don't worry they are not being mean to you, they are just posting thier pics 3 times!!😂😂
It took me a minute to figure out what you're saying but now I can't stop laughing. Thank you!!!
I love the purple flower so much!! 🪻
Thank you! I appreciate that so much!!
Youre such a sweet person dont listen to the haters 💞
Thank you friend. That means the world to me.
Feeding the algorithm by saying you have a very pleasant channel and I hope it has brought you some joy!
Thank you for watching and commenting! I really appreciate you!
Yay! Finally RUclips showed me a watercolor artist from Canada! I swear I've watched 100's of watercolor videos in the past month and a half but none from my own country. I don't know why. So happy to find you. Great video. Subscribed.
Yay! We Canadians found each other! The only other Canadian I can think off the top of my head is @EmmaLefebvre but it's all either British or Americans I see too (not that I don't love them too but it's fun to find someone from the same place, I agree!)
@@HelenAveryArtChannel -Years ago I saw several people using watercolors en plein air in Banff and Lake Louise. I cannot say they were Canadian but they were working in Canada.
Oh yes! There are so many of us in real life but I think my audience member who commented here means not many Canadian watercolorists with RUclips channels :)
@@HelenAveryArtChannel - Probably true. However, I love going through local art galleries and I have browsed through several in Banff and Calgary. While watercolors are not as plentiful as oils there are several in most every Canadian gallery I have gone to. In fact, I have one hanging on my wall completed by a Canadian artist. My parents purchased it back in the 1980’s.
That's lovely to have your parents' art from the 80s up on your own wall. Art is so transcendent. I love that. Thank you for sharing this info, I had never thought of it that way (though I have noticed the predominance of oils and acrylic over watercolour).
Hmm. This is a great video. Different than all the influencer videos.
I’m glad you think so! 😊 I hope the Mimo app and adobe podcast enhance help some people just looking to level up without spending more than they need to. I appreciate the comment! 😊
@@HelenAveryArtChannel I'm a bit of a gear head, so I have had several cameras, lenses, action cams, mics, etc. I've made a couple of documentaries and such. But, I've wasted a lot of time on deciding on the Pocket 3 because I do like the look of it, but your video was a sign from the universe!
You must have some serious gear stories you could tell! I don't want to underplay that the pocket 3 is LOTS of fun, especially the gimbal feature at first. But as I was using it for some vlog shots over the course of a week I eventually thought, Actually I don't love using a gimbal, I prefer to lock the framing, and I move around in the shot rather than the camera follow me, know what I mean? Then that begged the question, do I want this if I don't like the gimbal motion? But honestly, the focus hunting was the deal breaker, it was very frustrating. Also the screen is still small and my eyes are shit. That doesn't help, lol!
@@HelenAveryArtChannel The main things that prevent me from the pocket 3 are that 1) I've become a minimalist sort of. I sold/am selling most gear and keeping a Sony A7C II, couple lenses and Action 5. 2) I don't know that I'll actually carry around the pocket 3 much - like my iPhone. 3) the gimbal (good/bad) 4) I've seen a lot of videos where people mention how the focus and leveling gets wonky. Also that they don't use it as much as they thought they would. Plus, all the accessories get expensive, so 500 can get to 1K.
@@momohmartOh interesting! Thats a great kit and if you have the Action 5 I’d agree you might not pull out the OP3 all that often. I’ve never seen this mentioned but the long handle of the OP3 esp. in the case looks a bit menacing, and people will glance at what you’re holding in your hand as it kind of gives the vibe of a weapon. I never hear anyone talk about this though so 🤷🏻♀️ anyway! This was fun, thank you for sharing so much info, cool to see what other people own!

@@HelenAveryArtChanneldon’t listen to this idiot sweetie you’re doing great, and this jackass is a condescending, gatekeeping fuck, whose own content is so utterly lacking in every respect that he’s triggered by other people’s high quality content. The fact that you’re a well spoken, knowledgeable, absurdly beautiful woman only adds to the moron’s emboldened behavior, so bear that in mind. He’s a weak minded man, molded by the minds of other weak men…or at least a lack of strong men during his childhood.
That’s exactly what that means you idiot. It means it’s not worth it FOR HER workflow, and any who want to follow it exactly. How can you be so profoundly stupid?
You're just jealous that this woman has more followers and views than you.
I have been so tempted by the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 creator combo, but it's not really within my budget, so my phone is here to stay and to be honest, I'm pretty happy with it. I think it's sometimes a good thing to not be able to see yourself when shooting with the back camera of the phone, as it means you're focusing on looking at the camera lens and not yourself. But it is a bit of a faff to set up the shot, test it, then go back and film. But I have seen there are phone cases or attachments which have mirrors on the back of the phone. So that could be a good idea for being able to film back camera and still see yourself.
I've even seen someone just use a mirror. That's it. A mirror behind the phone...so simple! I'm sure there's a knack to getting it angled just right, but still! For the money the step up really wasn't there for me, especially when I reviewed the footage on a big computer screen. And the focusing issue...that was the most frustrating when it would go blurry every few seconds. Thanks for leaving a comment, Steph! Love to see you thrive here. Happy new year!
