    That’s such a shame. I loved the idea of the build. Keep going though and don’t let one broken piece stop you. I’m sure your first mallet was no where near what you produce now and I’m sure turning will be the same.

    As a person of many disasters , a lot resin related I can definitely sympathise, I found that carbide tools are better and have less chip out. The vibration mixed with the length of the piece will have contributed to the fail. I would’ve drilled a hole in the purple block and turned it round before attaching the resin and burl by turning it to fit the drilled hole and glueing in 🤷🏼‍♂️ your two part epoxy held extremely well tho 👏🏻

    • @BrookesWood
      @BrookesWood 2 месяца назад

      Thanks, will definitely give it another go. I completely agree & I will definitely turn it before, I was surprised it held together with the 2 part as well as it did. Carbide tools are on the list now, will be looking where I can get a good deal

  • @stuffbyneilsmith
    @stuffbyneilsmith 3 месяца назад

    I really feel for you on this one, I have been trying to work out if I can afford a lathe and even more importantly if I have room for one. But no doubt most of my attempts wood end in disaster.

    • @BrookesWood
      @BrookesWood 2 месяца назад

      I was never really planning on getting one but it made my mallet handles so much better. Have a look for some second hand ones if you can. The Lumberjack one I have is a good starter machine & you can upgrade bits like the chuck etc.

  • @jandrooghmans8043
    @jandrooghmans8043 3 месяца назад

    I would think it is the lathe bolted to the workbench. The workbench is to solid with all the other tools on it so the vibrations do not have annywhere to go. Might be better to put a few blocks around the lathe (and take the bolts out) so it does not move, but can disepate the vibrations. On the other hand the glue up of the 2 pieces held up beautiful, job wel done with that part. 👍

    • @BrookesWood
      @BrookesWood 2 месяца назад

      I had never even thought about having it all bolted together would add to the vibrations. Will definitely have tot think of something to dampen it. I can separate them which may help as you said. Yeah shocked it held together as well as it did. I thought that would have been a point of failure

  • @booyaa1851
    @booyaa1851 3 месяца назад

    i have to admit you were giving me the fear turning that. why it went, could of been a number of reasons. i wouldn’t have been using the roughing gouge once it was round. yes the Australian mallee could have had a weak spot., definitely seen that before. also vibration through that lathe to the tool. i’m not an expert but i do prefer to use carbide (negative rake) when shaping resin. it’s just easier and smoother.

    • @BrookesWood
      @BrookesWood 3 месяца назад

      Yeah I had to work with the tools I had. Will definitely be investing is some other tooling for the next time. My bday is coming up so maybe then 🤣

    • @BrookesWood
      @BrookesWood 5 месяцев назад

      From what I can tell the change would be very similar to how i did it. what i didnt mention is the adjustment screws inside. that is the easiest way to get them the same level. As long as the blades are the same height as the outfeed table you are golden.
