Let’s see what I got wrong - Reacting to my F1 predictions (2024 Edition)
Back in March, and also in August, I made predictions for the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship, as well as predictions for the 2025 driver lineup, and it is now time to see what I got wrong, along with a very special surprise in this very lengthy video.

I agree with most of what was said in the video, but I feel like some aspects were lacking. I think the calendar diversity has taken massive hits in recent years. We have a bunch of gravel rallies in very similar biomes, which is the same problem the series had *twenty* years ago, when Rally Cyprus, Rally Turkey and the Acropolis Rally were all held in succession. If the calendar were to be extended back to 14-16 average rallies, then, first of all the cars should be cheaper. That's the issue the sport ran into in 2005 and has never recovered from for most of my life. But we should also have more rounds in Africa and SEA. Heck, maybe a round in the U.S.? They've got a budding rally scene over there. And the fact we've been robbed of some tarmac events for so long is also shameful. Sanremo and Catalunya were there for a dang good reason! As for the points system... While I appreciate them trying to do their whole "winners should be rewarded aptly" shtick again for 2025, I feel like 2024 had the right idea, but the worst possible execution. The idea was to make sure that drivers try to extend their lead across Sunday by continuing to push, and that in itself isn't a bad thing. And they've been trying for ages to make the TV/Power Stage important, so why not go further? My proposal? 15-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the Top 10 finishers, +1 pt. for setting the fastest time across Sunday, AND +1 pt. for the quickest Power Stage. Do not question the numbers, my ramblings about why the ratio between P1 and P2 should range from 75% to 80% are not important. What matters is that this is far easier to read, allows for the same points swings the FIA probably envisioned, and makes sure that P2 will always end up with fewer points than P1! It makes sense to me.

Blame on both sides in my view; the new car was clearly off the ultimate pace but Makinen could have scooped up four more points to win the title without those crashes. One could look at it as a receipt for the '98 title he was lucky to win.

  • @ruzaroos

Rally fan is hilarious. Points don't have anything to do with individual rallies. Points are ONLY for the CHAMPIONSHIP!!! Winning a Rally is winning a Rally. No one knows how many points Carlos Sainz had from winning 26 rallies and no one cares. Seb kept crashing on Sunday chasing Sunday points instead of getting a lead and coasting like the 3rd day doesn't even matter. I'm ok with the tweak because it still does the same thing. It breaks a Rally into a 3 day Rally, a 1 day Rally, and a 1 stage Rally. 2024 was a 2 day Rally, 1 day, and 1 stage. You need to be good at all these things to win a Championship which is the only reason the points exist at all. Otherwise just give the title to the person who wins the most rallies and don't track points at all.

Rossi's 2000-2001 Honda was a 100% Factory spec bike. The team wasn't a Satellite team even though it looked like it at the time. Mick Doohan was meant to be Rossi's team-mate for the 2000 season but he had a bad crash during the 1999 season that forced him to retire. This is why Rossi was the only rider in that team. I get that hybrid isn't a fan (or team) favorite, but the looks of WRC getting rid of it when the whole world, racing universe largely included, is stepping towards alternative power sources like hybrids shows that the WRC circus is in trouble. Yeah, it's expensive, but racing is expensive. If the desire is to gain new teams and that costs are a barrier, then this series is evidently losing all its global interest. Ditching something that would show that the sport is at the technological cutting edge is sad. Understandable in this situation where there barely are three teams, but sad nonetheless.

i think removing rally1 is the way, but to completly discard it would be bad for the sport, the cars are fast, its dramatic, its fun, rally2 are not as fun, they are cool but not as fun and the cars are very spec, wrc is a bit like f1, it needs to be inovative but in contrast still a lot more road relevant. For me, the best thing would be a middle ground between rally1 and rally2, mantain a bit of that more fast dramatic aero, with smaller and lighter cars (no hybrid) and a spec but still free set of rules (a bit like lmh/lmdh prototypes in wec and imsa), that would get the costs down but still make brands inovate and get some unique cars, and that would probably get some more teams (both constructors and privates) to join imo

I'd say the points system is a big improvement. While there is still a chance that the winner won't take home as many points as the second placed driver, this is highly unlikely, unless the winner builds up a big lead prior to Sunday and then loses a lot of time in the Power Stage, dropping down the Sunday order. Still, it will probably only happen once or twice in the season, which is acceptable. Drivers will still push for the Sunday points and there should be no cruising on Sunday. I'd also say the new system highlights the fact that rallying nowdays is as much about endurance as it is about the sprint factor, and to get the most out of the rally, you simply need to tick both boxes. Lastly, as you mention, the importance of a win increases hugely with this change, in comparison with this year's points system.

I think it is far more valuable to focus on how the points structure affects the incentives for drivers. If points are only awarded for the overall finishing order of the rally, then if a driver gets a significant lead they no longer have an incentive to drive quickly, and the rally can become boring. My preferred setup would be to award points all the way down to last place at the end of every stage. The points structure should be exponential so the biggest points jump is from first to second place. Points could be weighted more heavily toward the longer stages and less toward the shorter stages, but that adds complexity that isn't necessary. Then at the end of the rally, the drivers get points for their overall time in the rally. I would weight the overall rally victory the same as all the stages put together. So if there are 10 stages, a stage win might give 50 points for a total of 500 points available. Then the driver that wins the rally gets another 500 points, bringing the total available points for the whole event up to 1000 points. (The numbers don't have to be this big, but it doesn't really matter if they are and this would make it easier to make an exponential points structure for each stage). The benefit here is that there are enough points awarded for each stage, that there is always an incentive to go for it even if you have a big lead in the rally, or had a major repair that takes you out of contention for the overall victory.

I do not think that Rally 1 should be ditched for Rally 2. While I do get the Idea I think there has to be a top class as we have it right now and Rally2s are a great support class. Also I hate the FIA. They have literally no interest in the sport, only in money. * cough* WRC Saudi Arabia * cough*

honestly the points system is not at all as bad as people make it sound. Most people who complain doesnt even watch the sport and most others are just pissy as soon as they change anything at all. The argument that "the winner doesnt always get the most points" doesnt work at all in my opninion. And to be completely honest here the points system achived exactly what it was set out to do. Allowing poeple who restart due to engine/car mallfunction allowed drivers in more problem proned cars to keep up better and not be as harshly punished on pure bad luck. Newcomers got more chances to show what they were made of, and the championship was much more even than previous years. And for once sundays were actually worth watching other than the power stage.
