Quotes From My Selective Mutism Awareness Month Blogs
During the month of October this year, I posted a blog about my experiences living with Selective Mutism for almost every single day of the month. I decided to have a bit of fun and put some of the quotes from those blogs into a video with various photos I have taken myself over the past year or so in the background.

    Thank you for sharing your story. My daughter who is 6 has SM, officially diagnosed at 5. We found a specialist and she is already making strides.

    I am majoring in Applied Psychology as of now in College and I am in the Anxiety Chapter in one of the courses, looking at all the diagnosis list on the DSM-5, I definitely agree it should be changed to Situational Communication Anxiety Disorder as it certainly covers all of the ground regarding the other video examples shown in your channel. Even 8 years later it certainly can stand and not age, and can be used long term.

    I use to have this but i managed to build up the courage even when therapy made it worse And then one day it talked with the fear of reaction and then i got student of the month and the whole school got told while i was standing in front of them i know how you feel and i hated the questions and annoyance of uneducated physyatrists that dont understand sm trying to make me talk, all the said basicly is you cant do it all you need to do is talk and im like that is the one thing I cant do

    Love this video and love the name. My daughter suffers from this and yes agree it’s situational, at home she can be herself, when out in supermarket. But packed places and at school she freezes or when spoken too. I know how you / she feels as I suffered with anxiety and it’s not a nice feeling to have. Welldone you explain SM to a T, thanks for the video I have shared to my daughters teacher. You record her on camera she loves it - but ask her to speak to someone on phone - or say hi to .... she freezes.

    No one cares about my selective mutism at school

    they should make a name for people who CHOOSE to be mute like me. I know that there isn't a name and people just call it SM but I choose to not talk in social situations because of my past and depression/anxiety...

    An excellent and very moving video. I can relate, even though my SM is/was less severe, but goes back almost 40 years to when there was no understanding (and no internet). I hope you keep progressing :)

    Leanne, after read all of your post boards, word by word, I can't imagine how nice a girl you are, and how painful a 15-year journey you have gone through. I wish the world would know more about SM and give those kids a peaceful world to live.

    Leanne, my daughter has selective mutism. I totally understand the painful feeling of helplessness. I am trying hard to create an easy environment for her.

    Because, like you said in your video, it's an anxiety disorder and doesn't only affect a child's voice, maybe "situational anxiety disorder" just SAD could work to? I don't have it, my anxiety and such are directly linked to my aspergers - part of the autistic spectrum - but I have a friend with selective mutism and I know what it's like to physically not be able to talk.

    @Priiter Yes I am still struggling with SM, BUT I am doing a lot better than I was before which is good. :) It sounds as if you do have SM, or maybe social anxiety? Most people with SM don't really tend to talk much at all so it sounds more like social anxiety to me, although I'm not a professional so I obviously can't tell you for certain.

    @xXNothingButLoudXx So ur still struggling in SM? Not sure do I have SM or not ;/...but I think I can understanding your feelings :] I'm an extremely shy person :$...although I can speak freely in public, but not when I was in high school ;( I'll just spoke to my close friends, I never said a single word to my classmates, unless there's sth really important that I must spoke to them (Eg. a group discussion assessment) really don't understand what's the problem with myself.. oops..I'm off topic

    @xXNothingButLoudXx Google Translate sucks LoL~ 場面緘黙症 is exactly the same definition as SCAD~ 場面 = social situation / places 緘黙 = mutism 症 = disorder Actually I'm not 100% sure for the definition ...Cuz I can only read simple Japanese =v='' And their meaning seems similar to Chinese (That's my first language x])~ Anyway, in Chinese the name really sucks ~___~ll

    @Priiter Hehe thanks. :D Most people say that haha. ;)

    @Priiter I'm glad you agree with me. :) What exactly does 場面緘黙症 translate into English? Because google translate said it translates into, Scene chien Mo disease and I have no idea what that means haha! (Google translate doesn't tend to translate things properly.) I completely agree, English should have a better name to describe it.

    @Elemarth Ah that's what it was haha!

    @xXNothingButLoudXx Because the guy who named it was German.

    'SCAD' is better hehe ;P as I know the name of 'SM' in Japanese is '場面緘黙症' it has include the world 'situation (場面)' in there~ dont understand why in English they don't use a better name v_v

  • @xXNothingButLoudXx
    @xXNothingButLoudXx 13 лет назад

    @Elemarth I suppose there are ways that you could imagine it doesn't mean it was a choice, but 9 times out of 10 as soon as people hear the name, they automatically think it's a choice. Where did I get German from then? I'm guessing maybe because when I looked it up it said someone called Adolf named it... and I associated that with being German, hense the I think in brackets haha!

  • @Elemarth
    @Elemarth 13 лет назад

    I think the name change had some difference because you *could* imagine that selective doesn't mean a choice. I'm pretty sure Aphasia Voluntaria is Latin, because that's what scientists used back then. German would be waaay too unprofessional in the 19th century. Nobody would trust a German name. ;)
