Context aside... I fcking love how they all managed to recreate the Transaclantic accent for this show. You literally felt like you're watching a show from the 80's or even earlier than that.
The line about the family history of insanity made me think of one of my favourite lines from ‘arsenic and old lace’ - insanity runs in my family, hell it practically gallops!
This part of the first season was so poignant, I felt so bad for poor midge, he literally ruined her life. The only thing missing from this scene should be Abe hugging midge and comforting his clearly heartbroken daughter
It's crazy that after all these seasons later I now have a new perspective of Joel. He's just a good guy who made a terrible mistake and now has to live with that mistake but also trying to make a life for himself.
He came there, looking for a fight. Just angry that Midge won’t take him back. He sees her work, and wants so badly to blame Susie. She lays the truth on him and he KNOWS she’s right. So, when that heckler showed up, he finally got his fight. Taking all of his frustrations out on someone who (kinda) deserved it.
a bunch of feminists and girls gonna give praise, for a women leaving her husband, because of him cheating. your supposed to work things out, and not divorce because of that reason. He did messed up, but to ruin a family, over a Man cheating, is quite selfish in it's self, even for a Woman. she had a few good liners, and to be honest, she wasn't that funny, but I do think she has potential to be funny, because she can hit a one liner, decent.
This was an absolute amazing scene! Great writing, just great acting! This just explains so much frustrations in actions and how people are so limited.
I found it interesting that the cops came barging in twice before to stop the 'indecency', but, were scarce when Joel beat that heckler black and blue.
People keep shitting on Joel, and for legitiment reasons, he REALLY fucked up something great and didn't realize what he had until he lost it, but he at least _realized_ it. When he went after those hecklers I was like "oh shit, here he goes making an ass out of himself again. probably all 'that's my wife up there pal' oh boy." but no he beats the guy and says "She's good." It's not about him, it's not about her relationship to him, or some posivness he has over her. It's just about her and her dream and her talent and *_support._* And while it's still in Joel's stupid way, he recognizes that she is so much bigger and better than him and he'd drag her down.
I've got to say, they didn't market this show well. I never would have watched it had someone not recommended it to me. The clips, commercials, name of the show...even the font all make it out to seem like an unfunny chick flick type of show when it's actually a very well written show, funny and not a chick only kind of show. It's a shame. They need to remarket it using someone who knows how to get a broader audience. Because even though everyone here likes it and it's won many accolades, I recommend it to people and they still don't watch it because it doesn't look funny or look like something they'd like.
“You’re breaking up a family!” DUDE…YOU are the one who decided to cheat on her and leave her alone with your kids. YOU are the one who thought it would be a good idea to bang your secretary. YOU are the one who humiliated her. YOU are the one continuing to choose to be a petty, jealous asshole instead of the supportive husband you should have been to her like she was to you. And now you’re mad at her because she’s better at this than you are? No Joel. This whole situation is entirely YOUR fault. This scene alone solidified why Joel is my least favorite character on the show.
He’s a GOOD man who screwed up. That’s all there is to it. He does not deserve to get back with Midge ever. He lost that right forever. Like a man who accidentally gets his arm cut off. Except this was no accident. He must live with his self amputation forever. And it’s this scene that makes me feel for Joel. It’s THE moment he understands that he has irrevocably mutilated himself. “She’s good” has two meanings: she’s good at comedy, and she’s a good human being and he’s lost her goodness forever because of his own selfishness. “She’s good” is him also saying, “I’m not good” at comedy or as a human being. I love that his character continues to grow from this moment on, attempting to atone for his self amputation. He knows he can never win her back and knows he doesn’t deserve even an ounce of kindness from her. But it isn’t preventing him to better himself for Midge’s sake. That’s his penance. That’s why I admit that I love Joel. He has the guts to look at the winning lottery ticket he burned up and still grow as a human being without the jackpot he threw away.
@@nloubriel2336 trust me he’s an asshole but I love complicated characters Bc he always acknowledges his faults and he supports midge and takes care of the kids he’s just an overall flawed but good character
I loved this bit so much. This story is making Joel grow, deconstructed and become a better person. He was always different than the rest: that's why Midge loved him. But the fact he learnt from his mistakes and apparently is taking a second chance in life, supporting his ex-wife and working on something meaningful for himself is remarkable. Midge and Susie are the stars, but the male character are so well written, when usually in comedy writers tend to make one of the leads a dumb person.
Agreed! I'm so glad he didn't become the boring, typical "asshole, cheating ex" that was written off after the first few episodes. He has grown into a mature, compassionate person with his own aspirations and interests, and I've really loved seeing his character evolve. Plus, the actor has great chemistry with everyone. All of his scenes with Midge are so natural, his relationship with Susie cracks me up, and I just love Mei Lin. Can't wait for season 4!
@@zerick6535 No, not at this point in the story. This was just Joel realizing how much he screwed up; he lost his wife entirely through his own actions, and then realized how much better she was than him at comedy. He grows a lot over the course of the show, but he is still at a very low point in this scene.
This is the moment where Joel realizes Midge will get what he wants most and thats to be in the limelight. Joel destroys Midge's perfect life when he left her and Midge now steals his dream. Great writing.
I don't want to see Joel in a relationship, he can be happy with his club but I want him to just be in love with midge and know what he lost and suffer
I’m such a sucker for funny women with big personalities. I’d never betray Midge. I’d be under her spell for a lifetime. And she’s ^*%#*+ gorgeous so there’s that too.
Since the end of episode 1 I couldn't wait for Joel's reaction when he realized Midge was good at stand up and man was it worth it. I just finished watching season 1 today and I'm so excited to watch the rest immediately.
Very few comics can do improve every single show. Most write their jokes and pretty much every show is the same. I like this show, but its highly inaccurate regarding comedy
He cant stand she is doing fine.
Susie ftw when she tells Joel off.
But at the end of season 5, I'd say the writers did Joel's character justice. This Series is the best.

Joel was blinded by his lust to other woman. Lesson learn men, be strong.

People were saying this woman would beat dead pool in a stand up comedian show...

Men ☕ after cheating on their wife...
"She's good" is an extremely important line. Not merely because it's true, but because Joel realizes that he wasn't.
Blaming others that They Ruin their Family when he's the one who left for his other woman. The Audacity.

He left her. She didn't leave him. He walked out on her in the middle of the night.
It’s the guys fault if the wife divorced them for cheating. If they hadn’t cheated there wouldn’t be a problem
Which episode
Susie is such a badass wow

Thanks for not censoring as Prime has done...
I love how lenny is in the shadows is in almost every part of this scene
Another scene for the „a thousand examples why Susie and Mudge have couple energy“ list.
3:15-3:17
Really show how much he screwed up Like he had everything and threw it away

I prefer the one from the Telethon

She handled those hecklers beautifully
I got goosebumps when Suzy said "you're always going to be that loser in the bar pointing at a tv." Joel deserved that.
The writing in this scene is so amazing. The comeback jokes and Joel being in love with Midge despite his affair.
The Sal Mineo line was perfect
I just watching Ms Maisel now and see this episode last night, amazing!

That material is only moderately funny at best.
