I really enjoyed hearing the details of the German siege of Sevastopol. I’d heard it was a hell of a battle but that’s all I knew about that particular event.

I am sick and tired of the german gentleman soldiers. Millions of civilians were killed by the "gentlemen " german soldiers. They always the ones who better tgan their opponents but somehow had to retreat and lost the war, twice. My father fought at Sztalingrad, with and on the german side, and they were anything but gentlemen, none of them.

Very, very interesting the impact that Stauffenberg assassination attempt on Hitler had on frontline troops. They basically knew after the attempt that the war could not be won. Many generals caught up in the plot had the deep respect of frontline soldiers. It starts at 1:10:00 and carries a few minutes into episode 8 where this authors former commander was killed by the SS. He finds all this out post war.

The end part of this diary reminds me of Steven Craine’s Red Badge of Courage. It is an existential statement of war. You live in the present, and die in the present. There is no past. There is no future. All is now, the moment of now! Great writing. I was in the Vietnam war. Battle is like that. There is no time, only the present. Only when the attack is over does time exist again, and it overwhelms you until you wonder if you are alive or in the bad dream of the dead.

Note The American ID Number on front vehical . also GI helmet and overcoat "Ma Duece' M2 machine gun . Diary claims to be a front line enlisted man . sounds more like college boy creative writing novelist with no military experience.

I am so glad u uploaded this, it’s actually one of my favorite books I could listen to it over and over again and never get tired of it. The author is just so incredibly intelligent for someone so young at the time and does a fantastic job telling his story and describing what it meant to be a 19 or 20 year old kid serving in the german Wehrmacht during operation Barbarossa. He reminds me a lot of Eugene sledge in that his intelligence actually makes it more difficult to cope with the realities of war because they internalize and think about all of the death and suffering they have experienced, searching for meaning and purpose in a world of hate and violence. There was always an internal struggle between good and evil and sometimes that meant doing evil things to protect good people. What is right ? And what is wrong? It’s like they were fighting a war inside there own minds in addition to fighting the enemy and they both spent the rest of their lives trying to come to terms with all the horrifying things they had done and seen.

How do you assess gottlob bidermann's refusal to serve on the western front or in the defense of Berlin insisting to being with his comrades in the surrounded Courland pocket were sudden death and harsh imprisonment were eminent at this stage of the war?
