Another advantage I see is that logs that would typically not be suitable to mill into dimensional lumber can be used for this type of construction. Basically, you could use the stuff a logging company would leave on the site.

I have a literal forest. It was over 10 ft tall last year. The roots were over 20 inches long and 6 inches thick. I was told the berry is also toxic, even if it touches the skin. They absolutely were pretty. And apparently the Grey Catbirds LOVED the berries. Ive had the berry juice all over me with ZERO issues, but I have no issues with oak, ivy, nor sumac poisons either. Instead Im super allergic to weird stuff like jalapenos and perfumes.

A very informative piece. Thank you! I have learned to appreciate Rivercane for its excellent properties in making atl atl dart shafts. I had no idea about its other historical significance. I appreciate it even more now. It’s virtually unknown here on the Delmarva peninsula where I live, But I managed to stumble on to a small patch near my home near my home near Easton Maryland. You have inspired me to try and propagate some to help protect it here on the Delmarva Peninsula. Do you have any advice for propagating it from cuttings or other means? .

It's much nicer since that power plant in Aberdeen came down, very sad about the two men who died in the process. Fr. Fritsch, my mom, Frances McCarthy was a classmate of yours, I think. She passed in 2010. She said you had the only IQ higher than hers in your class. Funny the things we remember.

Thank you so much for your informative guide on poke. I have a few questions regarding the 'one poke berry per day' arthritis/rheumatism remedy: 1. How old were you when you first began taking poke berry-was there pre-existing arthritis upon beginning treatment, or did you start taking it solely as a preventative measure; 2. If arthritis/rheumatism was already present, how long before you noticed relief of your symptoms (days, weeks, or months?), and has your doctor noted any reversal of joint inflammation/damage with diagnostic scans (X-ray/MRI) after a particular length of time with the poke berry protocol; 3. What is the best time of day to take the poke berry and is it best effective taken with, or without food-i.e., upon waking on an empty stomach, after coffee or with breakfast, or just before bed (on an empty stomach) in the evenings?

As someone who’s descendents came from Kentucky and settled in southern Ohio, and also fascinated with this period of our nation’s history, your little town is a place I would love to visit. I have long been an avid student of Simon Kenton and I didn’t know that Washington was property that he once owned, but it fits since he was the first white man to settle at Limestone Creek and later Found Maysville. While the highway would have been a great benefit to Washington and its people, it helped preserve the town’s historic heritage. Instead of shopping centers and restaurants and developments sprouting up, Washington is truly a time capsule, preserved as it was 230 years ago. It is truly a treasure for history lovers like me. Washington is definitely on my to do list!

Evidently it is only used In homeopathic preparations, but may have some other medicinal properties. Will poke seed last without having to refrigerate it?

I've seen so many frogs in my yard this summer, and I think that is a sign of a pretty clean ecosystem. Speaking of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, I saw Cardinal Mindszenty at a similar named church in Cleveland, OHio back in the 1970s. Did not know what the hubbub was about, but I know they even have a small boulevard named after him in downtown Cleveland, right near the lakeshore.

I've noticed it in the NYC area from videos I have seen.

You mention that the poke seeds must have been in the ground for years before they sprouted. I had a boxelder tree uproot in a severe storm one year and that year I had red berry elderberry come up. The seed from the elderberry had to have been in the ground amongst the roots of the boxelder 100 years. It amazes me how long seeds can stay viable when buried deep enough in the ground and sprout as soon as they are exposed to the air and sun.
