Mercedes model R107 with automatic transmissions has a switch attached to the driver side of the transmission known as the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) or in the electronic circuitry diagram in the manual as the Starter lockout and backup lamp switch. This video gives details of the function, removal and installation of this switch on a 1983 500SL. Access to this switch required loosening of a heat shield panel over a catalytic converter to provide a glimpse at the switch. However, most of the work was done by feel, while the car was supported on jack stands behind the front wheels.
Finally, note that the 500SL uses a slightly different NSS part number, being 0005455306 rather than the more common part for other SL models of 0005454906. The 500SL transmission is designed to start off in second gear in normal operation, unless the gear shift lever is in B, or first gear, or if the switch under the accelerator pedal is engages by flooring the pedal.

Very helpful video thanks for sharing (Qualcombose)
Thank you for your video!! I have 6 windows to replace this weekend. I notice you did not replace the rubber-gasket seal. Do you know if Lewmar suggests using marine-grade silicone with a new gasket/rubber seal? Lastly, approximately how much time did it take to do one window?
Glad you can use my experiences to your advantage. The rubber seals showed no sign of degradation, so just cleaned them up with soap and water, as dirt tends to collect around them when closed. Now over 20 years on the boat, and no leaks from the gaskets. Don't know Lewmars procedure for replacing them, sorry. Time to complete one window was a very skewed distribution, hours for the first, and recalling about 30 minutes for the last.
Thanks Al, I 'm about to do some replacements, so seeing the procedure is very helpful.
Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. Saved me many hours of grief trying to adjust the porthole hinges!!!
Thanks for taking the trouble to explain soooo well. Most helpful. Mike
