Love this little opera!
Ironically it is Adolf Hitler most favourite because of some of the nationalistic sentiment in the Opera. The original lasted for over 5 hours and Wagner was asked to cut it down to 3 hours but he totally refused.
While Rienzi started Hitler to think about a political career, his favorite was probably Tristan as he requested to hear this opera most often. There is an excellent article about this at www.therestisnoise.com/2012/02/hitlers-favorites.html
@@classicalmusicdiscoveries Thanks for the article.I was so astonish when I come to the end of the article. He attended the performance of Tristan conducted by Gustav Mahler a German Jew !
Rienzi was a money maker for young Wagner but he chose to compose in a different direction and follow his dream of through composed music dramas. Rienzi was popular until about the 1920's as it is nearly impossible to perform complete and requires a huge cast and scenic demands and a tenor to sing for 4 hours until his big Aria at the end.
Beautiful performance!
