This park needs a new Big Dipper single rail coaster just like Sydney got. That Coaster can be designed to fit into most spaces.

Indeed. As you are probably aware, the original BD ran over a tight, interwoven course within the eastern? side of the Scenic Railway. The original blueprint may still be available in Australia or via John Miller archives in the US.

@@retrothingz yes it was a classic figure 8 layout. It's footprint was where Metropolis was previously and it went behind the dodgems building.

I grew up in St Kilda and skated at St Moritz, danced at the Palais de dance and went to the pictures at the Palais.running over to Luna Park at interval and of course the beach after the pictures. We had it all. It was such an amazing place to grow up in.

When I first went to Luna Park it had the scenic railway for the little kids and the Big Dipper for the adults, The only rollercoasters I go on these days is on my VR headset

The Age newspaper used to hire the whole place out for annual christmas party for employees & families. There were no tickets you could just ride on everything free.

Most of the exciting rides and attractions at Luna Park Melbourne have gone. Who remembers The Rotor?

    • @smitajky

Of course I remember the rotor. And the giggle palace and the river caves. On the way into the giggle palace they had an air blower so that the girls could do a Marilyn Monroe act. That wouldn't be acceptable in today's mindset. The beautiful wooden slides both straight and bumpy. I was too young to go on the rotor for many years but I did get to go on it just once. I also passed up a ride on "Jack and Jill" when very young. Alas it too had gone later when I was a bit bolder.

Cool. Video of the Sydney/Adelaide or Melbourne Big Dipper are very rare. Both rides were the same.

That clip of Jacobs' band at 1:21 was actually mostly Jay Whidden's Orchestra from next door's Palais de Danse. It would date from 1938 - 40 and some of the musicians evident in there, are George Dobson (lead trumpet), Bob Gibson (lead alto sax), Bernie Duggan (piano) and George Watson (drums). Jacobs is standing centre. (Whidden was an American bandleader - and very successful - who led at the Palais de Danse for 3 years.) His band's musicians would start next door at Palais Pictures under Harry Jacobs in the pit and play the overture before the movies, they'd then take a few rides at Luna Park to let off some steam and then tote their instruments next door to the Palais de Danse, the country's undisputed top venue for dance musicians, where they would play until as late as 2am.And they were paid well too (!) Heady days for some musicians - if you were the top guys.
