Can you build a temple from a text?
Vastushastra, the science of Architecture, is the subject of Sanskrit texts called vastushastras, which contain substantial sections on temples. It is sometimes said that these texts laid down strict rules that constrained the creativity of architects, and sometimes that they are obscurely theoretical and nothing to do with architectural practice. The relationship between the theory and practice of temple architecture is more complicated and interesting than either of these preconceptions. We cannot begin to understand this relationship without knowing what kinds of prescriptions such texts give, and whether a temple can be designed by following them. In this talk I look at north and sout...

Temple Architecture in the Samarāṅgaṇasūtradhāra
Просмотров 3,4 тыс.2 года назад
Here I discuss temple designs derived from this famous 11th-century vāstuśāstra text. The talk is based on a study I published as "Theory and practice of temple architecture in Medieval India: Bhoja's Samarāṅgaṇasūtradhāra and the Bhojpur Line Drawings" (New Delhi: Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts with DevPublications, 2015). Translations in the book (and talk) are by Mattia Salvini. ...
How to Resurrect a Lost Temple Site: architectural conservation at Ashapuri
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.4 года назад
In parts of India there are beautiful old temples that nobody knows because they have collapsed into jumbled heaps of stone fragments. They are like giant three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles. Because Indian temple forms are so structured and rhythmic, someone who understands their architecture can solve the puzzles, even where many pieces are missing. Their designs can be rediscovered, and drawn. ...
The Bhojpur Line Drawings - what we can draw from them
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.4 года назад
A unique set of architectural drawings survives engraved on the rocks surrounding the unfinished 11th-century temple at Bhojpur. They hold the key to the temple’s intended design, and show that it would have been by far the biggest Hindu temple in the world. The story told in this video can be read detail in my book Theory and Practice of Temple Architecture in Medieval India: The Samarāṅgaṇasū...
Evolution in Indian Temple Architecture
Просмотров 21 тыс.4 года назад
This talk surveys the diverse traditions of Indian temple architecture and discusses patterns that can be seen in the ways they develop. A pattern of emanation, one form coming out of another, can often observed both in the formal structure of individual temple designs, which express a sequence of emergence and growth, and in the way in which temple forms develop. The talk (sequel to ruclips.ne...
Emanating Temple Forms
Просмотров 7 тыс.4 года назад
This animation illustrates dynamic patterns typical of the traditions of Indian temple architecture. It shows the developing Nagara tradition of northern India, where successions of increasingly complex forms are created, each extrapolated from earlier, simpler ones. Individual express the dynamic process by which they came about, reflecting ideas about the birth and evolution of the universe. ...
Typology of Indian Temples
Просмотров 21 тыс.4 года назад
Typology, for the architecture of Indian temples, is not just a matter of classification, but the basis of its origins in early wooden buildings. It is also a creative principle, by which new temple designs are invented by combining existing types. This talk explains the origins and development of the main traditions of temple architecture in the Subcontinent. The lecture was originally intende...

@adamhardyindiantemplearchi6512 Adam your research work on Indian temple architecture is awesome. Truly telling you I am very much inspired by you even though I have a background of Sompura (ancient temple architect lineage). Recently I built a Vallabhi Style Hans Tilak Prasad in Gujarat.Gujarat has only one vallabhi style temple of 7th century in khimsara. After that the only second temple after 1300 years.I want to invite you to visit here on your next India visit. Good wishes to you.

Wonderful presentation...This work is outside my primary focus on the "folk architecture" of many regions, including India. Still, I concur that once any architecture is fully understood at an intimate level, it can not only be designed from text but also built if one has mastered those requisite skill sets regardless of how demanding they may be.

Why Karnatic music for North Indian Nagara form of Indian temples?

    • @dwarasamudra8889
      @dwarasamudra8889 Год назад

Before Islamic Invasions, entirety of India had Carnatic Music. The North fell to Turkic tribes who brought in Persian Influences to form Hindusthani. The South preserved traditional Carnatic Classical which is what the likes of Kalidasa would have practiced.

There is no new news about it in the mainstream media. Also, are you working in association with the 'Archaeological Survey of India'(ASI)? P.S, thanks for your hard work, I hope more people acknowledge your work.

evolution has been rejected altogether by those above the indoctrinators and social engineers of our education systems, it just has come down to the peasants yet, kinda like how christianity was rejected previously by they still taught sunday school for decades.
