Ugh I wish we got this darker version of half life 2 so bad, don't get me wrong I love the HL2 we have. Its like an itch that we never got this one. I love how darker this one is. It makes you think even if the humans do win, is there anything left to save?
Retail Combine is creepy in a more cosmic and abstract way with how incomprehensibly powerful and both cold and emotionless they are, like a giant uncaring machine. Beta Combine is just plainly disturbing in a more straight-forward way, with their dark Orwellian aesthetic, poisoning the air and turning Earth's atmosphere into this green-tinted toxic mess, with how they seem to adapt and warp human technology and resources, and the whole dark bio-mechanical vibe they seem to have going on. The Retail Combine makes Earth look sick, but the Beta Combine made Earth look dead, almost warped and hellish in a way. I really wish we could play this version of Half-Life 2.
considering the combine using organic life for things, i wouldnt be shocked if the citadel itself were alive in some capacity, and some of these are the citadel itself crying out for help
Sadness, fear, tears, sadness, gloominess.... depression and apathy ... a lot of terrible emotions from Half-Life 2 Beta. And what would have happened if it had come out? The world, or the gaming industry, would have changed a lot. I'm glad the Beta didn't come out, but I'm also sad, everyone is sad and glad. Beta is cool with its horror-mystery-noir atmosphere, but it's not what we deserved. Everyone has a different opinion, but I'm glad Valve didn't implement it.
I could’ve done without phantoms, at least in the aspect of them being tied to sleeping. Legit couldn’t figure out why I had these unfamiliar creatures dive bombing me when I was coming back from my mine
There's something about those white tiles inside that just make it so creepy. It feels like the citadel is some kind of insane asylum to me. It just gives me that kind of feeling. There are no words to describe how this place makes me feel other than terrified. *And i frickin love it*
0:42 is clearly not a cosmonaut, as the last line you can clearly hear “Last Warning”. Cosmonauts speak Russian, not English. My theory is that this is some kind of transmission that was sent to the US (possibly as a threat) that’s distorted to shit. Valve has been known to add fucked up things in their games, as corpse_01.mdl is modeled after an actual burn victim. Mind you, HL2 was supposed to be much darker and grittier, which would explain quite a few things.
I had a dream where you know those camps where during ww2 Germany would kill people at concentration camps this dream felt like that but pure nightmare fuel I don’t know why but this reminded me of it
00:30-01:17 I like how I get slaughterhouse vibes from this area of the citadel... the sterile white tiles, the blood smears, the pale light... what a truly horrific place devoid of any humanity.
Yea it's more creepy if you play the actual beta. 2 years back I got the HL2 Beta mega build from hl2 beta ru, fired up one of the maps and it's just empty, no ambient sound, not a single person in sight - it's just you walking around in an unfinished architecture. It's quite eerie and feels like you're being watched sometimes.
No, the full retail release we ended up getting is a masterpiece. If they released hl2 with their 'beta' vision of the game it wouldn't have been as good - playtesters did not enjoy the beta, there were too many concepts thrown around and they couldn't get something consistent so they scrapped it and made the HL2 that we know of today
@@rlfpotatoking9253 Maybe playtesters with tastes of 2003 did not enjoy it, but audiences of 2023 aren't audiences of 2003. People today love the weird, creepy sh*t that was clearly "too much" for people back then.

arent we all stalkers
Me right before getting muted in vc after everyone agrees to server mute me
Well the alarms though, they almost sound scary 0:56
feels like bioshock
this shit should be the ambience for the deep dark in mc lol
The day half life 2 episode 2 episode 1 comes out this must be added back
Fact: That sound from this video used in Hl2 beta minimalist mod.

1:43 The beta concept stalker design will forever haunt me.
I have the balls to listen to this at 2am

The beta version should never be cancelled
Half life 3 could be crazy if it ever comes out.
Looks insanely cool tbh, kinda wish they made this too
to think this is a LITERAL OFFICIAL unused voiceline baffles me
i wish this is the theme they went with in half-life 2. The game we got is a glorified tech demo at best.
is it me or do i sometimes hear the creepy radio ambience but like kinda really slowed?
Trans6?

Valve really scammed us by neutering the game for the full release.
