Teaching Kids Fly Fishing Via Tenkara (3 Reasons) | Plus Tenkara Line Formula
Просмотров 552Год назад
Eric Carter-Spurio of Anchor Fly offers his 3 reasons why introducing kids to fly fishing is efficient and effective. Tenkara is an effective and very simple method for catching trout in small creeks and streams. Using it for kids is great because of how light the rod is -it is much more manageable than a fly rod with the added weight of a fly reel. Moreover, there is no fly line which means no...

    I have used the Pitzen knot since 1964. I have had one failure, don't know if it was the knot, the way I ted it or the line. Good presentation! Tight lines and fair winds.

    I bought two Liquids and hate them. They have resistance when reeling in. If the drag is tightened, that issue gets slightly worse. They are junk. I gave them both away and still use my old Cabelas reel if you can believe that.

    I have the remix, which uses the same spool as the Liquid. So, I am assuming that the gland cap mishap carries over to my reel as well. Thanks for the info! I haven't had it happen, but I will check it regularly from now on.

    • @anchorfly
      @anchorfly 10 месяцев назад

      This is up to you but I wouldn't recommend it as it limits the versatility of the reel. All you need to do is pop the spool off from time to time and hand tighten the gland cap. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment. Be well!

    • @907akfshrmn
      @907akfshrmn 9 месяцев назад

      If you go that route, then make sure it is Loctite 425 because the regular stuff can damage the gland cap. But a lot of the reels will never have this problem because all of the Lamson fly reels that I have owned never had an issue of the gland cap working itself loose. As I mention on another reply, I suspect that some are lubing their Lamson fly reel up when they tell you in the booklet to run it dry. I have witnessed different issues that Lamson owners had because they oiled the reels up but used a lot of grease too.

    • @anchorfly

      Thanks! I dont get tangles and for those who do I think it is a matter of practicing casting. This is a euro setup so there is little to no false casting for me here which is where problems tend to happen. Also, another tip to avoid problems in using two flies like this is to place your anchor fly on your dropper tag. I find that placing my heavier fly on the dropper minimizes twist. Hope this helps!

      Contact Lamson about that because their customer service is great, so they will make it right for you. They sent me a new handle at no charge when I contacted them about a reel that I bought that appeared to have a screw part on the handle that was not quite right, which they asked me for my address, then the part they sent came in pretty quick.

    My sons and my Lamson Liquid reels both popped off. Sent in to Lamson to be looked at and they put blue locktite on the threads of the gland cap and sent the reel back. So far so good but I check it frequently.

    • @anchorfly
      @anchorfly Год назад

      Interesting. I personally would avoid that solution to keep the flexibility of the reel. But I do get that and it should totally work for you. My guess is that applying Locktite would be a full proof solution for this issue.

    • @gregkosinski2303
      @gregkosinski2303 7 месяцев назад

      @@anchorflyI wouldn’t be worried for a personal rod. I can see the concern a little bit if you’re flipping them back and forth quite a bit for guiding, but if you use the normal blue one, it’s not like you can’t break the threads again.

      Not all Lamson fly reels have this issue. If it is something that happens often, then someone might be lubing their Lamson fly reel up when they tell you in the booklet to run it dry, but they will replace a glandcap and I am sure there is no need to send the whole reel in because they would just need to know the size of the reel to know what gland cap size to send.

    A second question, if you don't mind: It looks like you didn't include the Palomar knot, which is what held up your bucket, in the study. Wouldn't the Palomar, by definition, be the strongest know of the bunch?

    • @anchorfly
      @anchorfly 2 года назад

      Thank you so much Alex--really appreciate your interest in the study. In terms of strength the palomar is an incredible knot and works fantastic with larger hook sizes... However doubling that line over and getting it though the eye of smaller flies is super tedious and in a lot of cases just not doable.

    • @jamestucker4280
      @jamestucker4280 Год назад

      @@anchorfly So... somehow you can get the line through the hook eye 2 times for the Trilene Knot, but you can't get it through the eye 2 times for the Palomar Knot???

    • @anchorfly
      @anchorfly Год назад

      @@jamestucker4280 Thank you for your comment. You're right both knots have the line passing through the hook eye twice. The Palomar is commonly tied doubled over, which is not possible on smaller flies, however, if you wanted to tie by passing tippet through twice (not doubled over) that would totally work. Please note: before the trials, we conducted a survey asking 240 experienced fly anglers what knots they used... The Palomar was not one of the 7 most popular answers so this was not a knot we were highlighting.

  • @alexargyros7186

  •  2 года назад

    Came here from finding your website. I am surprised you haven't got much more engagement from people for all the work you did. I'd be interested to see your data set. (raw data if you happen to have a spreadsheet?) The only reason I am asking is because I just want to see what the standard deviation is for each knots across all the test you ran for a given line / knot / hook size. [Came here for the knot showdown and stayed for the science...] I am in search of a knot that I must practice over and over in all sorts of weather conditions. In fly fishing comp, any time spent without a fly in the water is a WASTE! I sat on the banks as a controller and watched many competitors for days. I've seen some of them spend seconds tying knots and other spending up to 1 minute fighting material with cold fingers.

    • @anchorfly
      @anchorfly 2 года назад

      Thanks Ben. My apologies for the delayed response. I am not going to be able to dive in and give you access to the raw data for this, however I will say that there was a relatively low standard of deviation. Because there are so many variables in tying a knot I considered high deviation operator error and threw it out. I am not sure if this provides more confidence in the study, but it is really all I can offer at present. Good luck to you!!
