Building 48V battery bricks from recycled lithium ion 18650 cells
In this video, I do a deep dive into the technicalities of building the 48V bricks I use on my DIY solar power energy storage cabinet. Warning: Contains maths and physics!

The Power Cabinet!

A short video about my home-made solar power battery energy storage system. It's 12th April 2020, and it's just smashed a new record of 7 consecutive days off-grid so I thought I'd document the occasion.

These brave stags ran the gauntlet of about 60 guys with full auto airsoft guns at a range of about 10m, with just their t-shirts and trousers. Brave souls.

Thank you
any more solar videos. this is greate explanation. i would like to know what is the thing you connect to battery at the end. 19:33 , it seems like a battery balancer or a capacity meter.
Hi John thanks for the video. It seems like I'm quite late to the party, early 3 years now. I wanted to ask you a question about the 18650 on ebay. I have around 40 salaved 18650 and I wanted to sell them on ebay. Would you be able to share some advice on this? Pricing and packaging / shipping are my two biggest questions. Thanks.
The simplest explanation ever👏
You haven't uploaded anything new since. Hope you're still okay & in good health
good video tks
biscuit and cookie are two different things!!! amazing to me ..all my life i have wondered how its your language and you cant speak it properly....ALUMINUM!!! keep trying that until lya get it.. carry on
Hello sir , what’s the name of that inverter u got a link from where u made the purchase? Thanks
FYI: ALL 26650'S ARE MIS LABELED BATTERY WITH A 18650 BATTERY PACKED INSIDE THE CASE. CHINA'S BIGGEST LITHIUM BATTERY SCAM EVER
Where is the BMS? In this setup you need one per block!!!
Yes, you really need a BMS or, at minimum, a balancer on each brick. Even more seeing how you just fill up the brick without evenly distributing the capacity per row. At the very least you should consider interconnecting the bus bars between all bricks so as to better balance capacity differences among rows.
The 0 in 18650 stands for cylindrical cell form. Not sure why Panasonic tried to dump the last 0 in the 21700 when they called it the 2170. The nominal voltage thing goes back to power bank companies wanting to boost up their watt hour rating. The vast majority of lithium ion cells are 3.60 to 3.65. There are some "LiHV" cells especially in the Lipo world that charge up to 4.30V and 4.35V but those are fairly rare in the 18650 world. Samsung, LG, and Sanyo have all made them but you don't find them quite often. If you look at the datasheets of cells they will give a more specific nominal voltage. LG MJ1 is 3.625 and a lot of cells are this same nominal voltage. I can't remember which chemistry is usually 3.65 I think its NCA. Powerbank companies decided to round up hoping to make their packs look slightly bigger than the competition and then their competition started using 3.7 as well. So just a big sham. LiFePO4 has the same weird thing with battery pack nominal voltage ratings. 16S is the most common "48V" size even though it is 15S is exactly 48V.
ahh good one,,, just a little addition the 3.7v of the battery comes from the natural volt generated from the chemistry used when brought together without charging and discharging.... just like our good aa and aaa alkaline batteries have rated of 1.5v which are their chemistry natural volt output
Great vid
I love your teaching style :)
Amazing videos! I myself started project like this. Gathering batteries and designing final idea ... As I use heat pump for heating cooling my small village house I need around 1500w peak. Thats why I think I gonna be good with 24v system (for now) I plan to get 2500w inverter and to make 24v 120A battery wall. The problem I have is which BMS to pick ... it is worth nothing that I don't plan to ever go over 2000w at least not for prolonged periods of time ...
cut the useless crap and not so funny voice overs and the very basic stuff.... stick to the meat of the subject.
Hello sir where did you got ur invertor , you got a link from where you made the purchase? Thanks
Hi friend I also made a 24kw 18650 wall Curious what you have set as parameters in the inverter such as Bulk Voltage float Network return Voltage Cut Off My settings are these For a wall of 18650 2A parallel 15 series 270 P26 Bulk 60.5V /15 4.033V P27 Float 59.5V /15 3.96V I don't know if FLOAT and BULK must be equal value in LiIon ? P13 Return to discharge voltage 50V 3.33V P29 Cut Off Return to Enel 50V /15 3.33V Then in case the BMS or Inverter goes crazy I always have SRV1000 and DRY Contat A30 as security Setting SRV1000 and A30 and BMS Daly V-Max=62 V-Min=48 5s delay 2V delta
Hello sir what inverter u using? Thanks
Great video! Any updates on how it’s been running for you over the past year? Thanks!
It keeps my office off grid about 6 months of the year, from about mid march to about mid September. 20 bricks currently online, approx 15kWh. Planning a video on balancing battery bricks next.
@@bumblinggimp hello sir where did you got ur inverter from you got a link for the purchase? Thanks
you have 1 bms you get fire in the future. wen 1 pack gets trouble. the BMS don't see the rest of the packs.only the 1 with BMS
I have a kit for this if your interested, more expensive, easier to use.
informative and not boring, congratz from Panama
Hi John great video - brilliant work and fantastic to power all of this in such a green way. Interested to see the revisit and how its performed. Did you manage to power the mower off it? Do you have an monitor for the batteries live capacity?
I think with a dram more sarcasm and a catchier title you have found a calling!
yes i think so, went yesterday and it was immense
the new woodland site is amazing, is so good for if you have as ghilie suit and there is a base and like benches and its mint, goin agen next saturday afta crimbo XD
nope, UK. The finest airsoft site I've ever been to. But then I've only been to two.
ack. I've just read the news on the phoenix forum. What a shame. I wonder what the new woodland site will be like? I'll have to get some more of my videos posted up here.
