Most of the stories told by today’s indigenous are simply echos of Justin Trudeau’s apology speech shortly after his election in 2015. I worked with indigenous adults who were children of residential schools. They told me that their parents were given the options. If they wanted their children to learn English along with other curriculum studies to assimilate into society, they would have to move them to residential schools within a reasonable distance from their reserves. Otherwise they could remain on the reserves, but schooling was very limited, and assimilating into society near impossible. The government did not force the parents to give up their children, they made the decision. As far as who would teach those children, the churches were the only organizations who were equipped with the staff qualified and willing to take on the task. Funding for this gigantic task came from all Canadian taxpayers via the federal gov’mt. Of course children of early ages and from all heritage background died of disease and were buried where practical, not out of abuse as the Trudeau apology speech presented. Asking for funds to unearth those children can only come from all Canadian taxpayers, not the federal gov’mt. Reconciling their deaths is a request that I find puzzling, because to me it is an act of disrespect for the dead. Furthering indigenous culture is their own responsibility, just like my immigrant parents took the responsibility to clothe, feed, educate, to make a better life for their children. My heritage was not granted a national holiday to learn the truth of why they had to immigrate to Canada and to reconcile why my sibling died of polio, or were required to attend boarding school taught by catholic nuns.

The Residential school system existed for 113 years. There were 139 schools across the country and 4100 children died. That works out to 0.26 children per school per year. There was also the Spanish flue epidemic of 1916 and other uncurbable demises. My high school in the 90s has a higher death rate of students than these residential school. Math doesn't lie. The media however does.

Everybody speaks about apologies but what about state designed restitution ? Canada, make it right. The national language of Canada should be the languages of the indigenous people. Give them back their land and teach this story in every Canadian school. It must never happen again.

Just watched the movie " Indian Horse". The treatment of the indigenous communities is disgraceful. This reminds me of what happened to the indigenous people of Australia. Watch the film "Rabbit proof fence" and you will see chilling similarities.
